Two police officers are dead following a shooting in an Innisfil, Ont., home.

''In a release, South Simcoe Police Service says its officers responded to a call at a home near 25th Sideroad and 9th Line shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to police, two officers were shot while inside the home. A suspect was also shot and killed.

Police have not said what the initial call was for. The Town of Innisfil is just south of Barrie and home to more than 43,300 people. The police officers were called to a home on a tree-lined residential street close to Lake Simcoe.

Both officers were rushed to a local hospital, where one died. Police say the second officer was then airlifted to Toronto in critical condition. Shortly after 7:30 a.m. police announced the the second officer had also died.''

''Warning: This story contains graphic content and may be upsetting to some readers.

Two police officers have died in a line-of-duty incident in Innisfil, the South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) said Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred Tuesday night around 7:55 p.m. when the SSPS said officers responded to a “disturbance” in a 25th Sideroad and 9th Line home in Innisfil.

The two officers were shot in the home. A critically wounded officer was airlifted to a trauma centre. He later died.

The suspect is dead following an “interaction” with the police, police said.''

''Multiple police sources — who weren’t authorized to speak on the record about the incident — told Simcoe.com South Simcoe police were responding to a domestic call.

A media conference will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Innisfil Town Hall. Chief John Van Dyke will read a prepared statement but will not be taking questions.''

Kevin went into his backyard to take something off his barbecue around 9:15 p.m., when he heard a “barrage of bullets” — somewhere between seven and 12 in all.

“They were in such quick succession,” he said. “It was ‘pop, pop, pop, pop, pop’ — very quick. It sounded like it was coming from one firearm, not three. It sounded like someone was emptying a clip. It was all the same sound.”

''Early Wednesday morning, numerous police cruisers participated in a procession for the first fallen officer to the coroner's office, near Highway 401 and Keele Street.

At around 8:30 a.m., police participated in another procession for the second fallen officer. They drove from St. Mike's Hospital along the Don Valley Parkway and Highway 401 to the coroner's office.''

''According to police, the two officers responded to an incident at a residence in the area of 25th Sideroad and 9th Line before 8 p.m.

A source told the Toronto Sun that police were responding to a domestic call between a grandmother and grandson. The source said the grandson was waiting behind the door and ambushed the two officers with an assault rifle. More than 30 shots were heard fired, the source added.

In a statement, the province’s Special Investigations Unit said, “Inside the residence, there was an exchange of gunfire between the man and officers. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The officers were taken to hospital where they died.”
''The name of the 23-year-old suspect was not released.''

RIP.
''Const. Northrup, 33, was a six-year member of the service assigned to the community mobilization and engagement unit. He is survived by his partner, parents and close friends in the service, said Van Dyke.

Const. Russell, 54, was a 33-year veteran of the service assigned to uniform patrol. He is survived by his wife and two adult children. Van Dyke said Russell's death was "personal" for him.

"I went to police college with Morgan 33 years ago," said Van Dyke.

"This is a heartbreaking time for our police service."

The service's immediate focus is to support its members and grieving families, said Van Dyke. It has requested that York Regional Police conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, adding that Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate.

"I am, therefore, very limited in what information we can share," said Van Dyke. ''

My nephew lives around the corner from where all this went down yesterday.

He’s familiar with the deceased suspect as he frequented my nephew’s store on a regular basis.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that mental illness is a big part of this tragedy.

Incredibly sad.

'South Simcoe Police Service Chief John Van Dyke previously identified the slain officers as Const. Devon Northrup, 33, and Const. Morgan Russell, 54, during a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.'

''So far the Special Investigations Unit has not formally identified the gunman, only saying that he was a 23-year-old man that lived at the home.

But on Wednesday several family friends and an ex-girlfriend who spoke with CTV News Toronto confirmed the identity of the 23-year-old resident as Chris Doncaster. Neighbours also told the network that Doncaster was the grandson of an elderly couple who resided in the home.

“He was definitely a troubled kid. That is all I would feel comfortable saying,” one neighbour told CTV News Toronto. “You don’t know the details of what goes not behind closed doors but it is very upsetting. I am upset to think about how those grandparents are now feeling about their grandson and everything that transpired in that house.”
