''Four Toronto schools were on lockdown on Thursday. Police say there are stepping up patrols around schools for time being''

Police Chief James Ramer says officers were called to the city’s east end around 1 p.m. on reports of a person with a gun.
He says officers were confronted by an individual, and that person is now dead.''

The scene where the man was shot by Toronto police is about 130 meters from the William G Davis Junior Public School.

All the school lockdowns were lifted after a couple hours, according to the Toronto District School Board.

The incident occurred days after a gunman in Texas killed 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school. The Texas shooting fed concern about gun violence worldwide.''

''There’s increased police presence in Scarborough's Port Union area today after a man carrying an air rifle was shot dead by officers near an elementary school on Thursday.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m., police were called to the area of East Avenue and Maberley Crescent for reports of a man carrying a firearm.
Officers located the man several hundred metres away from William G. Davis Public school and “an interaction” occurred''

Witnesses outside described hearing three gunshots in quick succession, and officers attempting CPR on the man afterwards.

William G. Davis went into lockdown and children told CP24 they huddled under their desks during that time.

The incident also prompted four other nearby public schools to go into either hold and secure or lockdown. All school restrictions were lifted by 3 p.m.

The SIU confirmed Friday morning that a 27-year-old man had died and that he was carrying a pellet gun, not a BB gun as earlier reports suggested.

The president of the Toronto Police Association said two officers were taken to the hospital for a “checkup.”

It is unclear where the man was headed and what he was going to do with his weapon.

An SIU investigator was seen by Chopper 24 photographing the pellet gun, clad in wood furniture with a scope attached to the top of the barrel.''

The Toronto District School Board said social workers will be at schools in the area today to support any students in need.

The SIU said an autopsy will be conducted on the man on Saturday.

It sounds as if the man with the pellet gun wanted to have police kill him - "suicide by cop," as some put it. While there are exceptions, lethality is unusual with pellet guns, although there can be eye injuries and painful wounds. The pellet gun couldn't inflict casualties like the rifle used by the Uvalde, Texas shooter.

Video obtained by CTV News Toronto shows a man walking down the street and carrying what appears to be an air rifle before he was shot.

My thoughts also, suicide by cop.

''How can one tell the difference if they are faced with the dilemma of trying to disarm someone carrying a rifle on the street?

If the police tell someone with a gun to drop it immediately and they don’t, it does not matter later whether that gun is loaded or what its capacity is. In this tragic case, in which a 27-year-old man was shot and killed by Toronto Police, it has now been determined the rifle was in fact a pellet gun.''

The SIU is doing a deep dive into his background. Sources say a man identifying himself as the father of the deceased shooter contacted police saying it was his son shot. He told police his son had mental health challenges. The SIU has not released the man’s identity, saying this would happen with the family’s consent, which they have not given.''
