Just horrible, (allegedly) first the murder of the girlfriend, then 6 days later his mother and stepfather at a different location. Did any of them have an inkling of what a highly dangerous individual he was? Probably not.

Calgary man accused of killing girlfriend, then mother and stepfather 6 days later | CBC News
“.....Dustin Duthie, 25, has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Taylor Toller, Shawn Boshuck and Alan Pennylegion. CBC News has confirmed that the dead are the accused's girlfriend, his mother and stepfather.....

......Police found a woman's body at a condo complex in the 2000 block of Applevillage Court S.E. in Applewood Park, a neighbourhood on the city's outskirts, after receiving a check-on-welfare call about two locations at around 11 a.m. MT Tuesday.

At a second location, in the 10100 block of Hidden Valley Drive N.W., more than 20 kilometres to the northwest, police found two more homicide victims — a man and a woman. City records list the owners of that residence as Boshuck and Pennylegion....”

Dramatic arrest of accused Calgary triple killer described
“.......The witness said he noticed another man sitting on a cement retaining wall in front of the entrance to the apartments, drinking out of a bottle

“I heard them say ‘Sir! Drop the bottle now!’ And he said ‘F— you’ or ‘F— off’ and then he drank again.”.....”

Triple-homicide victims remembered as football coach and nurse
“Pennylegion was most recently a coach with the Calgary Hilltoppers football organization, says team president Pat Labrash.

“I can’t say enough about the man, he definitely was a man of integrity,” Labrash said of Pennylegion, who he brought on as an offensive coordinator two years ago for the peewee team.

Just last week, Pennylegion informed LaBrash he had accepted a position with the Calgary Colts of the Canadian Junior Football league, not long after he helped lead the peewee Hilltoppers to a Division Three championship.....”

...Friend Tara Ramsay said Boshuck worked as a holistic nurse in Calgary that recently changed jobs and that she was “truly a lovely person.”

“She is very well-respected — when her first clinic closed she had several job offers by end of day,” said Ramsay.

Boshuck was the daughter of famed Canadian speed skater Walter “Wally” Boshuck.....”

*******

Seems like the sort of parents many young men would be grateful to have. It’s unclear why Duthie was charged with 2nd degree murder x 3 and not 1st degree for the murder occurring six days later of his mother/stepfather.

Sadly the high danger point, always when one is ready to move on......

‘This is all too real’: Friends react to murder of Taylor Toller
“She was the sweetest girl and she did care so much about everybody,” Widdifield said. “It’s unfortunate that bad things happen to nice people. Her life was cut too short because I think things were starting to look up for her.”

Widdifield said the 24-year-old Toller and Duthie dated off and on for about five years and had a volatile relationship.

“I don’t know what the status of their relationship was as of the 25th … but to my understanding is they were on the rocks again,” he said, adding he had met Duthie a few times and said that the young man “had a screw loose” and was quick to anger....”.

I must say, Calgary media is making a great effort in honouring the lives of the victims very early on and really I commend every person who’s been interviewed for allowing their name to be published. (As opposed to “a friend”, “a coworker” etc, anonymous people who hide beneath the headlines.)

So Duthie was apparently an illegal drug user. That wouldn’t have been too difficult to guess considering crimes relating in some way to drug addiction have become everyday news in this province. And it wouldn’t be the first time a parent has been murdered because a drug fuelled adult child on a binge has entered the family home demanding money or with the intent of robbery, then a violent confrontation occurs. But the murder of both parents, a few days after the girlfriend?

'I almost didn’t believe it': Former girlfriend of alleged triple killer says he had 'two personalities'
But she said the two kept in contact over the years and during that time she met both Shawn Boshuck, Duthie’s mother, and his stepfather, Alan Pennylegion. She said the accused wasn’t an ideal son but “was actually on really good terms with them.”

“When I heard about it, I almost didn’t believe it,” Martin told Postmedia. “They were really good people. They obviously didn’t deserve what happened.”

Martin said Duthie had a problem with drug use, which put him at odds with the rest of the family. But she said Boshuck and Duthie still had a strong bond.

“He actually had a really good relationship (with his mother). He and his stepdad kind of stepped on each other’s toes . . . but, all in all, they seemed to be fine.”

But Martin also said Duthie would swing from joyful to angry “like he had two personalities,” saying he would become violent when he was using drugs but “when he was sober, he was actually quite a nice person.”.....”

Triple-murder suspect Dustin Duthie remains under psychiatric care
“Triple-murder suspect Dustin Duthie may be fit to stand trial, but he remains in psychiatric care under a mental-health warrant, court heard Wednesday.

Defence counsel Rebecca Snukal told provincial court Judge Gerry Meagher she is awaiting disclosure before determining her next step in Duthie’s case....”

Calgary man accused in triple killing sent for more psychiatric tests

“Murder suspect Dustin Duthie, who is charged with the separate killings of his girlfriend and parents, will undergo a 30-day assessment to determine if he qualifies for a finding of not criminally responsible by reason of a mental disorder.....

.....Snukal told court doctors have already found Duthie fit to stand trial, but she wishes further testing to determine his mental state at the time of the killings.....”

Ugh, just throw him somewhere and stop stalling. It’s not fair that all the families involved are still denied closure. Did they ever say how they were killed?

No I don’t think LE has released the cause of the death for any of the three. As best as I can piece together, the girlfriend was murdered on July 26, his parents July 31st on the same day just shortly after, he called police waiting in front of the girlfriends apartment building. So just my own opinion, he knew what he did was wrong or he wouldn’t have called LE and waited to get arrested. It’s far more likely a drug and/or alcohol binge fueled his rage.

I sure do agree with you, for the families to know he might be lining up a NCR defense must make coping with the tragedy a hundred times worse.

The witness said he noticed another man sitting on a cement retaining wall in front of the entrance to the apartments, drinking out of a bottle.

“I heard them say, ‘Sir! Drop the bottle now!’ And he said ‘F— you’ or ‘F— off’ and then he drank again.”

He said another cop said something and the man dropped the bottle right away and stood up.

“The cops ran as a group and one of them put his hands behind his back and handcuffed him and put him into a van,” said the resident.

“It was like he was waiting for them.”

What does NCR mean?
“A person is not found Not Criminally Responsible just because they are suffering from a mental illness at the time of the commission of the crime; it must also be proven they did not have the capacity to appreciate their actions, know right from wrong at the time of the offence, or if they were not in control of their behaviour because of their mental illness.”

Murder cases to dominate the Calgary court docket in the new year

“While few new details are likely to become public because of an expected publication ban, Dustin Duthie’s scheduled two-week preliminary inquiry will garner some news coverage considering the allegations against him.

A two-week preliminary inquiry beginning Jan. 6 is set to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to order Duthie to stand trial for murder in the deaths of his girlfriend, mother and stepfather.

He’s accused of second-degree murder in the July 25, 2018 killing of Taylor Toller and the slayings six days later of his mother, Shawn Boshuck, and stepfather Alan Pennylegion.

It’s alleged Toller was killed at a residence in the 2000 block of Applevillage Court S.E., while Boshuck and Pennylegion were slain July 31, 2018, the day their bodies were found in their home in the 10100 block of Hidden Valley Drive N.W...”

Well I guess it’s a good thing he decided to plead guilty but what a senseless tragedy -

“Duthie was about to be questioned by police about Toller's disappearance when he killed his mother....

.....Duthie stabbed his mother six times by the back door of her home and then dragged her across the room and covered her with a plastic sheet.

Police determined Pennylegion had gotten out of bed to find Duthie cleaning up blood from his mother in the kitchen.

It was then he was attacked.

Duthie stabbed Pennylegion repeatedly and dragged him into the main floor bathroom with his dog, Odie, also killed...

.....Toller was found in her bed, tucked in as if she was sleeping. Her throat had been slit....”
