Circumstances of Disappearance:
Appleyard was last seen standing in the yard of her home in Emsdale, Ontario on April 27, 1986. She had gone grocery shopping in Kearney with one of her children and was dropped off at her residence on Fern Glen Road. She has never been heard from again.

Appleyard was involved in a violent and abusive marriage at the time of her disappearance. In 1988 as a result of the initial investigation, her husband, Sydney Appleyard, was charged with her murder. In May 1990 however, he was acquitted of second-degree murder at a Parry Sound courthouse.

Despite extensive searches with the assistance of a canine unit and a helicopter, Appleyard was never located. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

That DNA sample confirmed the skull that had been found decades ago did, in fact, belong to Appleyard.
