It doesn't seem that unusual to me. What's the point in reporting that tomorrow there might be something to report? The media reports the news ... after it happens. Furthermore, it's not like it's something that should be advertised ... it's a trial proceeding for murder, not entertainment.

Or....the media try to create the news...as in the case of lil miss pointing the mike in DG's face on the infamous perp walk. (No offense to the professional news people).

Unless DG pleads guilty, I highly doubt there will be anything newsworthy with his monthly court appearances. Of course unless his physical appearance to some is newsworthy as this is often mentioned. If he doesn't plea guilty, he will be making these appearances typically every month, more than likely for a couple years until his trial. HTH. Actually I am surprised a publication ban has been placed on this case. That may be announced in one of these hearings in the near future. MOO.

The Trial Process

There are basically ten steps in the trial process.
1. Arrest and Charge
2. Bail Hearing
3. First appearance / Obtaining disclosure
4. Crown resolution meeting
5. Judicial pre-trial
6. Preliminary inquiry
7. Trial
8. Verdict
9. Sentence
10. Appeal

While disclosure is being obtained, the Court will order you or your lawyer to attend periodically, usually about every 4 weeks, and provide updates.

The victims, specifically the parents of Nathan, are both oil and gas employees. The grandfather, a victim, was an oil and gas employee.

Could you please provide a link to support the claim that the Calgary oil and gas industry is rife with illegal drug abuse.

Me too, and I wish in a way that numbers of L and O family members would show up to look DG in the eye or to be seen by him in hopes that seeing them might trigger some sort of guilt (if he did do it) or remorse and maybe, just maybe he'd see some suffering and tell where the trio are.

Although, it might too hard for the family to attend, I wish they would especially the women. If DG has any love for his mom or sisters, women might trigger some sentiment in him. JMO.
The judge did mention he would appear via CCTV. Although he can see into the court, I am not sure he would be able to see facial expressions, etc.

Oh boy... wrong forum for THAT debate. Please don't make me defend male stereotypes.

Sam can be dreamy in a manly way... Okay... There, I said it.

Yikes! Wrong thread sweetheart! lol :crush:

I have a question. If DG is under suicide watch would the psychiatric evaluation already be determined and possibly finalized?

Probably the "in house" one, but the ones for the courts would be done by a forensic psychiatrist...30 days plus in a lockdown facility, I believe.

There is so much going on in the world that I think people, generally speaking, have little interest in hearing about tomorrow's court schedule. If something news worthy happens tomorrow, it will be in the news tomorrow.
Did you know that Canada is currently holding an emergency debate in the House of Commons on whether to send soldiers to Iraq?

Agreed, there's always bigger problems and bigger news, it's all relative and all important. People connect to stories they can relate to and connect to some stories more than others sometimes.

Personally, this story is one of them that got under my skin because as I mentioned before NO really reminds me of my own young child, and it's the circumstances and such a little decision that most parents have made without batting an eye multiple times, many times without thinking twice or that danger would be fathomable - 'oh sure, you can sleep over at grandma and grandpas tonight'.

It got to people and me because the second safest and most trusted place where most people feel they can leave their child other than with themselves is with their parents. It's so sad because it was such an every day decision most parents have made a thousand times. I can't imagine how JO must be replaying this in her head, it's a mother's personal hell to think 'why didn't I just take him home'… I think that's why it's touched so many of us across the country. JMO.

Oh interesting I see what you're saying. I also wonder if defence lawyers have certain favorite psychiatrists in their rolodex to use for certain trials, and to provide evaluations and testimony.

And I also wonder if a suspect can get evaluated by two different psychiatrists - one from the defense and one from the prosecution?

I don't think so. There are a team of forensic psychiatrists that do assessments for the courts in each province. Each province can send their charged to another provinces forensic psychiatrist but I believe these all work for either the Provincial jurisdictions, or Federal.

I would imagine that like all expert witnesses, Council on both sides have their favorites. Doesn't mean they will like the results, and in some cases, those results can be questioned and re-evaluated.

Take the case of accused mass-murderer Matthew De Good...

He was found fit to stand trial and is now undergoing another assessment:

Perhaps the lack of reporting is just a sign of the changing times, with the instant news, and the decline of MSM as the primary source of information. It's not happening now, so let me know when it does.

It probably says more about our birthdates than anything...

I remember when they first starting searching the acreage, I was following a reporters Twitter and it was an intense, minute by minute update. I was on the edge of my seat and checking it at work feverishly! I kept thinking they were going to be found alive and I was waiting minute by minute. Sadly, it wasn't the case :(

It is common to request links for statements on this forum, especially when questionable claims are made. It's simply not true that the Calgary oil and gas industry is rife with illegal drug abuse, and that is the only explanation for the absence of a link.

Claims about Fort Mcmurray, a city that is 800 kilometres North of Calgary, are completely irrelevant. The claim that has been made is that the Calgary oil and gas industry is rife with illegal drug abuse. If it is not true, it should not be stated. If it is true, there should be ample sources to back up the claim.

it's true,, google it, phone le in cowtown, call a homeless shelter, call an addictions rehab center. and fort mcmurray is the oil on the larger scheme of it, Calgary is the executive center, Edmonchuk is the bulk of the blue collar workers (and cowtown too). natural gas is mostly southern alberta into sakatchewan but the bulk of the oil, fracking or tarsands processing is in the greater fort mac area,, fort mac is the pudding. it think there is a misconception that the industry is town specific, whereas it's really a team of towns that make the industry.

Fort McMurray may well be an oil exploration site, but that does not mean that the Calgary oil and gas industry is rife with illegal drug use, and oil exploration in Fort McMurray has not been connected with the murders.

where was winter petroleum doing its drilling?

Thanks Cherchri, I wondered about the CCTV and it's effect in court. I assumed he could see everyone as if he was there in person, but like you said, makes one wonder if he *really* see the people looking back at him or looking him in the eye. So maybe not worth the families to go.

Interesting for sure, I guess they can keep sending in the psychologists to reassess as many times as they need for the 'right' diagnosis they're hoping for? There would have to be a limit I'd think, but you never know.

Would DG be allowed visitors at this point in time? I wonder if his parents or sister can have a positive impact on him?

Court ordered assessments to determine mental fitness to stand trial are all done thorough Alberta Mental Health Forensic Psychiatric Services.

As far as testimony during trial, Defence Council can utilize the services of privately secured expert witnesses to dispute findings.

Just curious Otto, if you think AL may have solicited investments from everyone he knew, do you think he may have solicited investments from his daughter EL and maybe FC as well?

we know that he sold shares long after a stop sell on shares of a company he and his brother owned was directed by alberta securities, so, who knows.

I would think that would depend if he is still on suicide watch. It is my understanding that they cannot have visitors during such an order.
