It would be great if everyone could show their manners! What is meant by, 'what's the fixation on a retired police officer?'? And coming from the same person who distracted the train of thought and brought up that the man 'screwed up', was 'seduced', and made a 'stupid move - a mistake'. The conversation went from there. The post from the original mentioner of his name was actually in regard to the case at hand! It is unfair to raise something and then make accusations of fixation when responded to! Must we be so argumentative here? It almost feels like some posters *try* to get a rise out of people by saying certain things, and then blaming responders for the very reaction that would surely be anticipated!
======================

Former Police Chief Hanson totally screwed up when he was seduced by the Conservative Party and given an appointed position. Hanson was not elected after his appointment ... stupid move - a mistake.

<modsnip>

Is that right?? I hadn't heard that part about Hanson not being elected after his appointment?? Wow! So what is the man doing now then??

Otto... where are you getting this info regarding bodies being burned.. and a pit on the south side of the house??? I hadn't heard that before? I don't remember conversation in here about that before?? Is there a link or something?

http://calgaryherald.com/news/politics/calgary-cross

True enough. What a kick in the head that must be.

I'm sorry, I find that story confusing. Was this a provincial election where Hanson was a provincial candidate in one of the Calgary ridings? And the NDP is now in power in the province of Alberta for the next 4 years? Oh wow, my deepest sympathies to all of you Calgarians out there.

What's the fixation on a retired police officer?

Hanson was appointed in one of Calgary's ridings shortly before an election (he abruptly resigned in the middle of a police contract) ~ Jim Prentice seduced Hanson to become a politician (Hanson was foolish to follow Prentice). It appears to be a floor crossing from Police Chief to Politician. After the floor crossing, Hanson was not elected. That was the end of his political career, and the end of his policing career.

The NDP is running Alberta, but that doesn't mean they run the country's oil valves. Premier Christie, in BC, has just approved an oil refinery in BC. The Indians are refusing land rights, thankfully. Typically Canada ships oil processing out of the country to reduce environmental risks and consequences. Western Canada appears to be run by wolves in sheep's clothing.

Thanks Otto. I often don't see anything but the thing I'm focusing on.
If this is how the politics played out its unfortunate for the chief....He played such a very big role in the investigation. I think the explanation isa good one. It was surprising when he stepped down and one was left wondering why... Did he choose to leave because he was leaving at the top of his game? Did this case get to him and he left because the work became gut- churningly unpalatable?
Was he forced out? His departure was rather sudden IIRC.

I am confident that he did his job honourably and extremely well under the enormous gravity of this case. After hearing the evidence presented, it only strengthens my respect for him and ALL of the members of LE that worked on this case. I saw a long time member openly break on the stand today, while presenting evidence. They have my deepest sympathies and utmost respect.

CALGARY -- The man accused of killing a little boy and his grandparents nearly one year ago frantically scribbled notes and watched intensely as his preliminary hearing began Tuesday in Calgary.

Did he not previously represent himself?

That was on an unrelated charge from years ago. He has had a lawyer throughout this case.

Week one of the preliminary trial has concluded. One week to go. I wonder how long it will take for the Judge to make his conclusion. I will assume this will be going to trial and I hope it transitions quickly. I can not imagine how the family is coping thru all of this.

I am curious if DG has issued a plea yet or if that is held off till after the Prelim. Can the Judge order a psych assessment or has that already been done?

Since he did represent himself previously, I wonder how much of a role he has in his own proceedings now or, if he doesn't plan to represent himself should this proceed to trial.
If he is frantically scribbling he's maybe not leaving it entirely up to his lawyer?

What additional charges could be added? Any theories on that? Did we ever come to a conclusion of sorts regarding the latest search of the acreage?

I was thinking attempted kidnapping, obstruction of justice (I think that's a charge!) since I would think he wasn't truthful with LE when they asked him who he was upon initial contact, maybe breaking and entering if that was fingerprints they were dusting on the alarm, he might've hacked the alarm (IIRC he did this in his criminal past).

What I mean is, there must be more charges they can throw in to see what sticks (legally) so there's a ton and not just 3 counts.

When he was first arrested wasn't he on suicide watch? This makes me believe he wouldn't be mentally fit to defend himself or play a role in his own proceedings. But who knows, he might think he knows better than his lawyer.

That makes perfect sense. I wonder if LE is considering any other charges or have continued to investigate if he was involved in any other unsolved crimes.

They had previously charged him with having the fake ID at the time of his arrest (or that other boy's bank card)... but they dropped those charges, saying they were related to his current charges and would be dealt with at time of trial on *these* charges.. LE cannot charge someone with something that is kind of included in another charge, something about duplication, ie charged with the same thing twice sort of deal. In my experience, in reading/hearing about things over my lifetime, I think police seem to levy as many charges as possible, I think to cover all bases, and then some of those end up getting dropped over time. I don't recall it being a common occurrence that charges would instead be *added* to the list, but I could be wrong.

I feel so bad for JO and RO and the families right now, this prelim and any type of trial is like getting hit twice with violence and trauma in my opinion. It's probably all starting all over again for all of them.

Then, if and when the big trial starts I'm sure it'll be dragged out and if he's found guilty the appeals will start.

Dessicration of a body
Hiding or destroying evidence of a crime
Interfering with a minor
Obstruction of justice
Just afew !

Under Canada's new sentencing laws which came into effect in 2011, DG already faces the possibility of 3 consecutive life terms (75 years in prison). I think additional charges (i.e. offering indignity to human body/remains, minor child, etc) would be taken into account as aggravating factors to be considered on sentencing.

Witnesses? Hrrmmm... CCTV and maybe the fire observer? Wonder what other witnesses

  • #818
Hmm. Officers, DNA lab folks, crime scene analysts, JO (as the first to arrive and see the scene), staff at the hotel in Airdrie??? No shortage of potentials. Maybe some we have no idea about too. Folks related to the many searches also. Who else? People related to Alan's businesses?

That is lots of potential witnesses, forgot about some of them. Interesting about the number of witnesses being cut by 25%, wonder what that's about?

Redundancy maybe? Or if certain testimony/facts are accepted as fact by both defense and prosecution maybe some witnesses don't need to testify?
