In speaking with Nancy Hixt (think it was her--following too many people!) via Twitter, she informed me that DG (and any defendant for that matter) could wear nicer clothes (such as a suit), but DG appears not to care..

Me too. I was also under the illusion it was a safe lock.

I was shocked by that. So all he had to do was drill that hole? No lock picking after that? Anyone could drill a hole and get in to a house if its really that easy😩

He knows there's no point in trying to look like anything better than what he is. He's gotta know there's no "out" here for him. I think he must be just going through the motions of this trial to exercise some level of control, ie: you WILL spend money on my trial and you WILL relive all the details - because I say so!

There are a couple of brands that can't be done as easily - they are pricey and most people go with the more affordable ones... I was looking into replacing my lock about two years ago and did a lot of looking into it, consumer reports and such.

And now everyone knows how to do it. Astounding how absolutely everything during the trial can be made public. Although it appears that one can research how to do anything if one is really motivated :notgood:

Christie Blatchford uses today's column to lament about court delays....

Christie Blatchford: Technology is the bane of Canadian courts and the Douglas Garland murder trial is no different

But she also gave a little insight into how DG is actively engaging in "his trial". I'm sure he's enjoying every minute of it. :notgood:

Omg - that is a must watch video commentary on the state of technology in our justice system! WOW.

I completely relate to Christie's frustration and misery.

Get your ☆☆☆☆ together people!!!

Good grief.

Just curious, where did you find this part, I missed that one: (She also does not believe Allen is common law with Patti anymore)
I tried to link it, but was unable on my phone for some reason.

If you go to msm reporter Megan @ CBC who is covering this trial, the tweet where she discusses Patti meeting her mother to show her the picture, Megan makes another treat in the comment section of that particular tweet about PG and AL not being together anymore.

Let me know if you can't find it, I will post a screenshot.

The details of this triple murder are going to be horrific. I gave no doubt. We will never know all the details, regardless.

The violence that is evident at the Liknes home alone, where <modsnip> had very little time to do what he wanted to, makes me just seethe in anger.

It's absolutely horrifying and repulsive to think that evil SOBs exist like this in our world.

Does anyone know if any of the victims family are going to court daily? It would be so hard to sit through and listen to it.

I read that JO was not in court yesterday and neither her or RO were there today...not sure about anyone else though. I can't imagine how tough it would be for all families involved 😔

Omg he even knew to turn off the wifi because they had internet phone??? This was very very planned. So creepy.
ITA. Ultra creepy. <modsnip>

I'm thinking even if he had been there before as a visitor, how on earth would he know what make and model of lock they had on the door. Pretty sure I can't name one from any home I've ever been to, even quite frequently. Come to think of it, I have no idea what the model number of the one on my own door is. :waitasec:

I know many folks who live on rural properties around Calgary and northern Alberta. Everyone's situation is slightly different. Those that live close to a dumping station or landfill will collect their garbage and take it in periodically. Some burn their garbage. Some compost food waste but it is pretty rare. Recycling plastics and cardboard/paper seems to be pretty uncommon as well.

Burn piles, from what I have seen, are usually used for larger garbage burns. These are generally used for bigger burns of yard waste, fallen/pruned trees, large amounts of cardboard, etc. Burn barrels are for everyday household garbage.

Open fires on acreages are extremely dangerous because the wind direction shifts quickly, and a fire can take off in a matter of minutes. I doubt anyone would burn tree branches openly on an acreage. Strange as it sounds, ranchers, farmers, and people with 20+ acres of land pioneered environmental and sustainable concepts 50 years ago (when Garland's bought their property) and earlier with water wells, septic fields, use of solar heat, composting, and recycling. 2-4 acre property owners are different.

My point is that, from the crown's perspective, if they found bone fragments in the ashes from the first burn barrel, and put forth a theory that these fragments belong to the victims, the defence may dismiss those bone fragments as being from burned kitchen waste - beef, chicken or pork bones. By collecting the ashes from the other burn barrels, 9 months later, they are able to say "look, here's the difference between the ashes we collected with bone fragments we believe belong to the victims and regular ashes from an average burn barrel, same people, same property, presumably same garbage habits, no similar bone fragments in the ashes collected later"

PS I live in the country and you have not described my garbage/compost/recycle habits accurately at all. I don't think you can generalize for all rural folks as to how they dispose of waste.

IMO

Life on a rural 20+ acres is a lot simpler when people use environmentally conscientious practices, but perhaps some people prefer a weekly trip to the dump.

Yeah, and simply take a photo on their phone for future reference and research.

I read somewhere today, maybe an article, or a tweet, that JO made mention of two people who stood out to her at the estate sale. I'm curious if they were two people together or at different times. Anyone recall reading that?

ETA: found article with comment

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local...mother-a-portrait-of-courage-on-witness-stand

"When defence lawyer Jim Lutz begins his cross-examination of the grieving mother and daughter, he speaks softly and asks just a few questions. He asks her about the comment that someone had taken her family’s bodies, noting it was the first he had heard of it. He also asks her about two people from the estate sale she was concerned about, which she confirms."

If we want to burn anything in these parts(N. ON) we need to get a permit from the township office. They're available only in certain seasons, weather permitting. Probably never in July.

According to this article he started searching the lock online on june 13. I don't remember any one tweeting out a date. So maybe that is around the time he decided to put the plan into action. It would be easy enough for him to drive over there and check things out make notes.

No doubt they are dangerous but they do occur. In some cases, with larger burns, the owner will plan the burn with the local fire department so that they can be on hand to keep things under control. In other cases the owners don't take such precautions and just burn away. I would post some photos of my buddies burn from this summer when he cleared a portion of his property but kids are in all the pictures and I don't want to post them in this discussion.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the regulations for my buddies county and they are pretty relaxed on burning cleared brush/trees:http://www.mdfoothills.com/resident..._department/burning_permits__regulations.html

I assumed it was new, but I suppose media could have pulled up an old one...

That's from the perp walk night or earlier that day or the next day. We were all intrigued about his t-shirt. It's from a company called Paramount Resources. The back of it had a colorful graphic. I think from a golf event or something. The back graphic was kind of a hostile image IIRC.

ETA: It was a Calgary Corporate Challenge event t-shirt.
