Sorry I missed most of the newscast. What I did hear was nothing new. Our Glamdoggy decided to steal the place mats off the table. Game on. Lordy

IF DG committed this heinous crime (& yes we realize that he's innocent until proven guilty), then IMHO he most likely put them somewhere on the Garland farm property. After all, he knows that place like the back of his hand. Those poor souls! I hate to think of their demise but we know he worked with chemicals & likely other machinery on the grounds. It's a devastating horror and heartbreak for the families, only to be exasperated by not knowing the location of their loved ones. There's really never closure but the unknown is terrible. I'm sure that DG (if he is the perp), would not think that his truck would be seen on the CCTV (in MOO) and therefore the farm was a safe bet. I have faith that LE have amassed substantial evidence to which we won't be privy until and if there is a trial.

I thought LE was quite specific in saying there were only the 3 charges, only the 1 suspect, they have enough pieces put together to create a solid enough case to lay those charges, however they will continue to look for the bodies and of course any other evidence that crops up in the process (regarding *this* case).

This isn't a direct quote but didn't at some point during the press conference the police chief say something along the lines of - these are the only things the POI will be charged with at the minute but they will be looking into unsolved previous cases ... could it be that because of this case it may come to light that this was not the first time 'he' has committed murder?

On a personal note - I have my own 5 year old son sleeping next to me in bed right now ... the knot in my stomach and the ache in my heart for all the loved ones is almost unbearable. ... the family have lost ... no, not lost ... they have been robbed of SO much.

Douglas Garland is the man police will be charging with the murders of three Calgary family members, CBC News has learned.
Sources have confirmed that Garland, who was taken into police custody earlier today, will facing two first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Kathy and Alvin Liknes and a second-degree murder charge in the death of their five-year-old grandson, Nathan O'Brien.

I can't help thinking that due to the (bad) relationship between AL and DG, the sister would have known very little about the current status of her brother. It seemed (from posts I read here on WS) that the L family was on good enough terms with AL's son who was married to her (or CL with her), and wouldn't it be really difficult to be on good terms with him if his wife continued to have good relations with her brother? She could however, provide a lot of insight perhaps, into DG's personality. I would really hate to be her right about now. Through no fault of her own, and even though it is not 'her', it would be really hard to take if your brother in fact did this to your husband's family.

I agree with someone's post that DG's sister may have provided useful tips for the investigators. She should know more about DG's personality, how he felt about the dispute with Liknes, how knowledgeable DG was about the Liknes's upcoming garage sale and moving plans. I read early on that she took leave indefinitely from her work for family emergency.

How hard it must be for DG's sister, if that's the case.

I can't help thinking about DG's elderly parents who have been so absent throughout all of this. (IS LE sure they are in fact alive??) What a heartbreaker of a son for those poor parents. First the meth lab on their land, and now crawling with LE looking for evidence of a triple murder.

I believe it was Saturday that police were canvassing in the area of some large acreage homes in Airdrie. An owner was talking to reporters about allowing them to look around in the sheds, etc. He shared that they had just moved in.
Perhaps DG was acquainted with former owners of that home, and who knows, maybe that's where he was found today?

A propos of the crime rate, yes it has been decreasing significantly for decades.

Here's a G&M link, but there are many sources:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...ith-homicides-at-46-year-low/article13416456/

The usual accepted explanation is the change in demographics, with a much smaller proportion of the population being composed of young males (say, between 15-35 approx.) who account for a disproportionate number of violent criminal acts. As the population ages, crime rates go down (old sociopaths don't have the energy, lol)

However our perception of crime has probably changed because we can find out so much more about it now, with the explosion of social media, news resources, the web, etc. 40 years ago the amount of information available was very limited, even though incidence was much higher.

Reporter asks if POI may be charged with anything further (other than the 3 murders) RH says "Any time there is a homicide of this magnitude, we would be remiss if we didn't look at every file we have outstanding"

My initial post was asking if anyone else interpreted this the same as I had - that police - in light of this case - may look at unsolved cases with the possibility being that this was not the first time the POI had committed such a crime.

Yes, I think it was definitely mentioned in an answer to one of the questions.

There have been way too many relaxed sentences in Canada over the years, I am hoping with all my being that he gets life. I am thankful he is actually alive, these days most killers end up killing themself once they realize they have been caught, I hope we can still get some answers to this senseless crime.

IMO he will never see the light of day. If LE has the evidence and IMO I believe they do.

Dear oh dear I am terrified that another innocent family might find some traumatizing evidence on their property, it's clear the police believe there is more to be found

I keep trying to type something, but there just aren't any words, only feelings that I can't even really put into words.

Why anybody, why the grandparents, why Nathan? Why NATHAN ??

My heartfelt condolences, prayers and hugs to the families of Alvin, Kathryn, and sweet little Nathan

I just caught up after being away from here since this morning. I have no words for what this has come to, I don't even understand. Not sure what the heck was between DG and the L's, but why could he have not just left NO to live? Life as they knew it for the O'Brien's is forever changed, and for what purpose? :(

Hugs. Yes the trail of living victims left is heartbreaking. May they find peace and a new normal in the days/weeks/months and years ahead.

Apparently huge for him. Incidental to most of us. Sadly. That's what separates us. We will never understand. I cant even imagine.

I am heartbroken for everyone involved .. The O'Briens, the Liknes' as well as the Garlands.. How tragic to have this happen, and then to have it be an extended family member. :( Sleep peacefully, Nathan .. a little comfort comes with the fact that your best friend, your Grandma, is with you.

Any in particular you are referring to? The only one that comes to mind is "Karla". Most of the other monsters I can think of continue to sit/die in prison, thank goodness.

Kimberley Proctor's murderers, I'm worried they may eventually get out since they were so young they are able to apply for parole after 10...
