Fibers are tiny, tiny little things that are easily transferable. However, they put Falconer in that camper with Amber!!

Sorry to be late with this. My real life is bothering me, and I can't focus on this trial like I want to. :(

This is Part One of a set of tweets from this morning's testimony of Dr. Steven Pitts.
-----

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC14 mins
Time for morning break.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC16 mins
Pitts is suggesting that he believes the fibres found on tank tap match the fibres of the blue blanket.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC50 secs
Pitts says it would be very difficult to find a second source of blue polyester fibres to match the ones he tested.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC6 mins
Pitts says samples he took from black tank top were very similar to the blue blanket found in trailer.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC10 mins
8 blue fibres matched the blanket.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC10 mins
Pitts is describing how he sampled the blue blanket. He tested 10 fibres from the blanket.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC17 mins
Pitts says the blanket was generally in good condition but had been worn in some spots. It also had a few holes and markings on it.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC20 mins
Pitts used sticky tape to take fibres off both items.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC20 mins
Bloody tank top also tested. Fibres on shirt were compared to the blanket.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC6 mins
Pitts also examined a blue blanket found in bedroom of camper trailer on Hardwood Hill Rd.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC8 mins
Pitts says his conclusion is that there is no other source. The black cloth found in the trailer was at one point attached to the sweater.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC11 mins
Pitts says as he continued testing, there were more similarities between the black cloth and sweater.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC13 mins
Pitts says a portion of the sweater had dirt on it.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC15 mins
The rest of the sweater was found wrapped around Kirwan's wrists.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC16 mins
This means the black cloth found in the camper trailer on Hardwood Hill Rd was a piece of Kirwan's black sweater.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC17 mins
Pitts says the physical characteristics are so strong that he is confident both items came from the same source.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC19 mins
Pitts says the black sweater did in fact match the piece of black cloth found in trailer.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC20 mins
Pitts says design characteristics were indistinguishable. That includes dye pattern.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC24 mins
Pitts says the black sweater and piece of black fabric were complimentary.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC24 mins
Pitts couldn't make a determination it was the same material at first sight. He had to do further testing.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC26 mins
Pitts says he took a sample from Kirwan's sweater and a piece of black cloth found in the camper trailer.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC31 mins
Or maybe not... He's back up. I will stop updating whether Pitts is sitting or standing now.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC32 mins
Pitts has decided to sit after all.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC34 mins
In Alberta, it is customary to stand during testimony. Pitts says he may sit at some point.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC38 mins
Pitts now describing other techniques he uses to analyze fibres and textiles.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC43 mins
Pitts is describing how fibres are tested in the lab.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC47 mins
Pitts tells the jury about his qualifications to analyze textiles and fibres.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC50 mins
Pitts prefers to stand while testifying.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC51 mins
Pitts prepared two expert reports.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC52 mins
Steven Pitts works for RCMP at national forensics centre in Edmonton.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC55 mins

The remainder of Dr. Pitts' testimony.
-----

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC28 mins
Textiles expert Steven Pitts completes testimony.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC29 mins
Defence lawyer Mike Taylor asks whether Pitts can tell how long fibres were on item. Pitts says that is an unknown.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC30 mins
Pitts says transfer of fibres depends how long two fabrics are in contact.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC31 mins
Pitts says the ability to target fibre and find another source at random is very rare when it comes to the blue blanket.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC33 mins
Defence lawyer asks if material from a jacket can transfer to a tank top. Pitts says that can be true, but fibres can get brushed off.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC34 mins
Defence Mike Taylor asks if blue fibres found on black tank top can be found in many items. Steven Pitts says yes.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC35 mins
Pitts now being cross-examined by the defence.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC6 mins
Lunch break until 2 pm. Crown will continue questioning Landers after lunch.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC7 mins
Landers says generic movements can be tracked.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC7 mins
However, Landers says the records show the movement and general area.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC8 mins
Landers says the cell towers on Falconer's phone records on Oct. 8-9 didn't indicate where exactly his phone was located.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC14 mins
Landers asked again to look at phone records of Chris Falconer.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC15 mins
Landers says the Pictou tower is the dominant server of Heathbell. It's located close to the ferry.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC16 mins
Sutherland's Bog can cover parts of NG too.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC17 mins
Landers says it is possible to be in New Glasgow and use a tower farther away on Fraser's Mountain.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC18 mins
Landers says hills and valleys can obstruct signal.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC18 mins
Landers says cell phones will often use strongest signal.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC19 mins
The Pictou tower on the other hand is much bigger and extends farther. It hits River John and the ferry as well as outlying areas.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC20 mins
Landers says New Glasgow tower is confined to the river valley. He says it's only 25-35 metres high and doesn't cover wide area.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC2 mins
Landers explaining where towers are located and their size.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC2 mins
Witness will look at map to help his descriptions. Jury not allowed to see it because it is not an official exhibit.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC3 mins
Crown asking that the witness refer to the same map objected. Defence has no objection to it not being official evidence.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC7 mins
Landers says most of the cell activity is in 4-5 km range.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC9 mins
Landers says there are 5 cell towers in Pictou County.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC52 secs
Defence lawyer still not comfortable with map. Judge decides to err on side of caution. Map not allowed as evidence.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC4 mins
Defence saw the map for first time today. That's what meant to write.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC5 mins
The use of a map is now being debated. The crown wants Landers to be able to refer to the map. Defence lawyer says he saw it for 1st today.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC12 mins
Landers says not all towers have the same coverage area.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC12 mins
Falconer got many text messages and some phone calls.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC13 mins
Landers asked to look at Falconer's phone records on Oct. 8-9, 2011.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC15 mins
Landers says when a subscriber sends a text message, they are not always recorded. Bell doesn't record but Telus does record.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC16 mins
He says there is a site ID on phone records. That's how he knows which tower picked up the signal.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC17 mins
Landers asked how he can tell which calls connect with which cell tower.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC19 mins
Falconer was a Telus customer, according to Landers.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC20 mins
He was asked to look at location of cell towers on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, 2011 in relation to Falconer's records.

Angela MacIvor‏@AngMacIvorCBC21 mins
