A man who lived in a barn several kilometres from the home of murdered retired Hamilton schoolteacher Audrey Gleave appeared via video in Brantford bail court Tuesday morning.
David Laurie Scott, 50, was arrested Dec. 29 and charged with possessing a concealed knife and breaching his probation, one day before the body of Gleave, 73, was found in her Indian Trail home near Lynden on the western border of Hamilton.

Didn't this man stay in a barn 6 km (3.72 miles) from Ms. Gleave's home? That seems like quite a hike in the winter.
My gut reaction to his outburst is that he wanted to say that he had nothing to do with Ms. Gleave's death. JMO

No, I didn't know this teacher or know her personally. She's older than my teachers would be now. It used to be a very small village when I was growing up there in the 60s and 70s and most people knew each other. It's become a wealthy suburb now and incorporated into the city of Hamilton.
My father still lives there in the house where I grew up. I seem to remember that an abortion doctor was murdered in Ancaster in his house about twenty years ago.

Just checking back at these comments, identifies the man who lives in the barn. However, note that he was arrested the Tuesday BEFORE the body was found, on unrelated charges. I'm really not getting the feeling that he is involved. JMO

It seems Lynne was Audrey's best friend, yet was only ever in her house once. Presumably the dogs were not confined during Lynne's outdoor visits with Audrey. If Audrey didn't invite her best friend in, thus barricading the dogs, who is it that Audrey DID invite in that required the dogs to be barricaded indoors?

Just to keep the record straight Missizzy, I believe the homeless man was arrested the day before Audrey was found, so that would have been Wednesday, Dec 29, as she was found on Thursday, Dec 30.
I agree with your feeling that he may not be involved, because he has not even been categorized as a POI let alone a suspect. Also, as recently as Jan 7 after the search of the abandoned barn had been completed, when asked if the public should be vigilant, Det Hrab's short but definite response was "Yes". Usually LE would indicate that they are somewhat confident the public has no reason for concern. That smacks to me that nothing of any value to the investigation was found during that search and they are awaiting forensics to include or exclude him, but nothing else points to his involvement at this time. JMO .. but heck, i've been wrong before
You are correct. The commenter must have gotten their date wrong. He was arrested on the 29th and the body was found on the 30th. However, we still don't know exactly when between the 27th and the 30th she was murdered. I guess he can't be totally ruled out as a suspect yet.

Just to be clear: what was the last time she was heard from by anyone? Her body was found on Dec 30th so if Audrey was heard from before the time this guy was arrested, it doesn't necessarily place him in the clear. She could have been dead for a few days or so in her home before this guy was arrested. JMO

I agree that is possible,but, I was thinking that if she was deceased for more than say a day, her dogs would probably be barking nonstop ...wanting food,a bathroom break and from the anxiety of smelling death in the house.
I'm not so sure the dogs weren't barking wildly. I haven't seen a report that her dogs were ever heard barking by neighbors. There was a report of neighbor's dogs barking, though. I think Ms. Gleave's house was set far back from the neighbors and her property abutted a cemetery.
There are two reports of her last sighting. One was by her friend, LV, who brought over soup on the 27th. I have not seen a report as to what time of day that was. And then there was the comment that her vet was the last to see her alive....a few days before Christmas. I truly think that this is just poor reporting. He was "one of the last" to see her, I'm assuming. She stopped by his house to pick up dog meds. Unless of course, he saw her later, after the 27th, and that visit just has not been reported.
Concerning the comment after the article about DLS being arrested "on Tuesday", while other reports state that he was arrested on the 29th, which was a Wednesday--it is possible that the person who commented is local and knew somehow that the man was questioned on Tuesday. I'm not familiar with Canadian law. He might have actually been taken in on Tuesday but not formally charged until the next day. There is still a window of a day or two, though, that he cannot be accounted for. Being that this man seemed to be known in area, and possibly known by Ms. Gleave, I fail to see how LE could say with certainty that she was killed in a "random attack by a stranger".

And I just noted that a new comment has been posted at the link above. Someone is saying that Ms. Gleave always put her dogs in the basement when someone came to the door as she was afraid they would harm someone. That explains a lot. Living on the west coast, I rarely consider basements.

May not be related, but Woodstock is only 42 miles from Ancaster where Audrey lived.

Not sure what day the vet actually was paid a visit. Possibly he's not certain. I guess it depends on whether she stopped by frequently. It seems as if they were friends. I've wondered about that visit and those meds. It might be nothing but it strikes me as unusual. I've wondered if LE can't determine this by a credit card or receipt. I believe that vets have to record all pharmaceuticals which they dispense. At least they do in the states.

In rereading our posts, it again strikes me that Ms. Gleave's purse was found supposedly intact, in the house. One would think that a robber would want any credit cards or cash she might have. And why else would a stranger kill a woman in her house, unless the attack was sexually motivated? Any other possibilities?

unless I misunderstand the way the web works. Those comments were made 3 hours ago??? About the dogs being in the basement? I'm going to take that with a grain of salt as it goes on to say dogs are with spca, but it has been well documented that the breader has taken in the dogs to be re-socialized in hopes of finding a home for them.
I'm sticking to the dogs were in the kitchen, where I'm speculating her purse was on the counter and the perp didn't have the wherewithall to take on 2 german shp dogs to get the purse.
As always just my opinion and speculation.

Lily--When I posted my comment, it said the comment had been made one hour earlier and I know it wasn't there last night as I checked the name of the homeless man and read all the comments again at around midnight, western time.
You know, WSers pay close attention to details but not everyone does. Maybe this person heard about the SPCA (as that's what was first reported) and just kept that thought in their head. There's also no way any of us can actually check to see where the dogs are. They might be in the custody of the breeder but under the auspices of the SPCA while the investigation is ongoing. I guess there's the possibility that the breeder couldn't handle them and thus turned them back to the SPCA. The person who wrote this post might know the house but not be an animal person who would differentiate between a breeder and a shelter. JMO
