Though I no longer live in British Columbia, I'm quite familiar with the Meritt area. It'd not that far by Canadian standards from Vancouver or Kamloops, the latter gaining an increasingly poor reputation for crime, drugs, vandalism and gang activity. The area around Meritt is remote. Plenty of lakes, forest and open ranch land and it's actually quite a beautiful part of the province. This remoteness lends itself ideally to criminal activity unfortunately, with lots of space for illegal goings on to pass by unnoticed. My personal theory is that Ben came across such activity innocently and for that he was eliminated. It's very cold around Meritt in the fall and winter, and as marijuana is legal in British Columbia, I can't see him having come across a grow-op due to the legality and the climate. Other options include stumbling on an chop shop where stolen expensive cars are parted out (although that could be discovered by putting a drone up), witnessing some kind of gang activity, biker or otherwise, being a witness to a murder (look at the Danille Tyner / Heather Grogg case on here). My gut tells me outlaw biker gang, based on many years living in British Columbia in Greater Vancouver, Gulf Islands and West Kootenays. IMHO Only, just speculation and no facts or links to back this up other than my own personal experiences.
