In this statement of facts, it says that during each of the murders, one of more of the following factors were present. Planning and deliberation, a murder committed in the course of sexually assaulting the victims or a murder committed while the victims were unlawfully confined Catherine McDonald on Twitter

In a downtown courtroom Tuesday morning, self-employed landscaper Bruce McArthur pleaded guilty to murdering eight men with connections to the Gay Village.

Many of his victim’s family members were in court to witness the plea.

Yes. He can be sentenced to 25 years for each murder, which would be 200 years. I wish that instead of issuing the ridiculously long sentences that we sometimes see in the US , that a life sentence for a preditor murderer such as BM, meant that anyone so sentenced would remain in prison for life. Simple.

Correction to my earlier post, only the six murders — which were committed after the 2011 change to the law — qualify for consecutive sentences.

Client puts spotlight on two sides of serial killer Bruce McArthur
"Serial killer and landscaper Bruce McArthur betrayed client Karen Fraser by using her Mallory Cresc. property as the burial ground for the dismembered remains of innocent victims.

Fraser heard some disturbing details of how McArthur sexually assaulted, bound, forcibly confined and staged his prey. She tried to reconcile the perpetrator of those horrific crimes with the cheerful gardner who frequented her property from spring to fall for years."

“We call him Bruce A and Bruce B,” recalled Fraser after McArthur pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder. “Bruce A was very happy, enjoying his job — a talented landscaper and gardener. He was energetic and enthusiastic, always eager to get on with his tasks."
"Bruce B “is not mentally ill,” Fraser told reporters outside the downtown courthouse. “He’s evil."

Judge leading review of missing persons cases wants to examine McArthur prosecution

Jan 31, 2019

"The judge leading the independent review into how Toronto police handle missing persons cases now wants to examine the prosecution of Bruce McArthur as part of her investigation.

Gloria Epstein, who is retiring from the Ontario Court of Appeal, was appointed in June 2018 by the city to examine what Toronto Mayor John Tory called "troubling questions" in the wake of McArthur's killings.

The former landscaper pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder for a string of killings that largely targeted men connected to Toronto's Gay Village between 2010 and 2017.

"This will make it easier for us to do the job that we've been tasked to do," said Mark Sandler, a criminal lawyer and counsel to the review. "We could look at the full range of systemic issues pertaining to these missing persons investigations."

The report is due in April 2020...."

Why did Bruce McArthur plead guilty? Police hint answers are coming

Jan 30, 2019

"Why Bruce McArthur, 67, chose to plead guilty to eight charges of first-degree murder was not explained in court Tuesday morning, although police hinted that answers still may come.

McArthur's admission in a Toronto courthouse that he killed eight men between 2010 and 2017 wasn't entirely surprising — police had said earlier a "significant development" was coming. But guilty pleas can be rare in big trials because, during the lead-up, the defence can determine the strength of the Crown's case, according to B.C. criminal lawyer Marilyn Sandford....

Outside the courthouse, Toronto police Det. David Dickinson, one of the lead investigators in the case, indicated he would comment on McArthur's reasons for pleading guilty at a later time. Insp. Hank Idsinga, the head of the investigation, also suggested that more information about McArthur's motivation to plead guilty may be forthcoming.

"We'll see what else comes out in court next week," he told CBC News.

Sentence to be decided next week

Ontario Superior Court Justice John McMahon opened proceedings Tuesday by asking McArthur if he understood exactly what it meant to plead guilty and warning him that he could not plead guilty to things he didn't do just to get the case over....

McMahon said the guilty plea meant he had to sentence McArthur to life imprisonment. Whether he will serve his sentences concurrently or consecutively will be decided next week at a sentencing hearing that begins Monday....

More information on nature of crimes expected

It is still not known how McArthur killed his victims. But what the court did hear Tuesday, in an abridged version of an agreed statement of facts, was that all eight murders were planned and deliberate, that six were sexual in nature, that McArthur had kept some of his victims' items as souvenirs and "staged" some of them, although what that meant was not clarified.

The full details of those crimes are expected to be revealed next week at a sentencing hearing where friends and family will deliver victim impact statements....

McMahon said it would be in everybody's interest for the case to wrap up next week, "to have closure for the family, for Mr. McArthur, for everybody involved."

Should serial killer Bruce McArthur get the death penalty? (with clip)

"Serial killer Bruce McArthur’s admission that he killed eight men dominated headlines this week.

And there were lots of opinions on the streets Wednesday about what the murderer’s fate should be.

However, a random sampling of 10 people in Toronto’s Gay Village area and outside the Old City Hall, found little support for a return of capital punishment...."
