Accused serial killer Bruce McArthur lived with his family in this house on Cartref Ave. in Oshawa from the mid-80s to 2000 and a neighbour has claimed a boulder appeared on the front lawn just before he moved out.
When Toronto Police launched its first probe into gay men disappearing from the Village — prophetically dubbed Project Houston — they had no idea they were on the verge of unearthing the worst serial killings in the city’s history.
“That investigation crossed a lot of international boundaries,” Det.-Sgt. Hank Idsinga told the Toronto Sun recently.
Swiss author Markus Dubach believes his tip led cops to Brunton and sparked the cannibalism rumours.
While researching his book Encounter with a Cannibal (Begegnung mit einem Kannibalen), published in German last year, he embedded himself within an online community of people interested in the consumption of human flesh.
“I also had contact with a suspicious person, Alex Brunton, who claimed to be a cannibal,” Dubach told the Sun. He told Swiss cops he was concerned the Ontario man may be tied to Navaratnam’s disappearance in Toronto.
Dubach became convinced there was a predator using the Village as a hunting ground. With cops unable to find bodies, he postulated they may have been eaten.

Dubach’s tip was deemed credible enough that Toronto cops went to Switzerland to interview him in 2013.
However, no evidence was ever found to suggest the Village victims were cannibalized, Idsinga said. There’s also no evidence so far to suggest Brunton and McArthur know each other.
Investigators also continue the daunting task of delving into McArthur’s past and his previous addresses, which may include an Oshawa house where he lived with his wife and two kids — before coming out of the closet.

imo, pure speculation but If the boulder appeared without any purpose, I would suspect something and look under it. Or better yet. Actually break it open. Could very well be man-made and contain a "trophy".

Police will descend on 30 GTA properties linked to Bruce McArthur in search for more human remains

Det-Sgt. Hank Idsinga expects he may need to conduct excavations at three properties, while investigators continue to search for 'every drop of blood, every drop of semen' in McArthur's apartment
Idsinga said teams will still perform a secondary sweeps of all the properties they revisited — including the Mallory Crescent home — but of the 30, there are about three that he’s more closely eyeing.

“There are three properties where I’m going to say: ‘Make sure you search every corner of this yard and if you hit on anything, I’m willing to dig again’,” Idsinga said.
McArthur’s former neighbours spoke to police two weeks ago and were particularly concerned with a large rock that McArthur appeared to put add to the front lawn overnight more than a decade ago.

Although he can’t exclude the possibility, Idsinga said it wouldn’t sense for McArthur to have buried remains there.

“For him to overtly do something like he did at Mallory (Crescent) I think would be very difficult unless the wife and kids were aware of it,” said Idsinga, who believes McArthur acted alone. “That becomes a little more farfetched.”

Most of the tips they’ve received were easily eliminated but several others could not quickly discredited

The man, he said, may even be known to them. Idsinga couldn’t rule out that police already have the man’s photo as part of hundreds missing persons cases they’re cycling through. But depending on when such a report could have been made, the man’s appearance may have significantly changed.

Some of us on WS see a close resemblance between Kalon Purvis, missing since 2008, and the UID.

The investigation could go on for years but Idsinga and his squad are already exhausted. The lead investigator often catches himself nodding off to sleep in his chair. He’s already told his wife that he won’t likely see her for weeks. “God bless her,” he said. On occasion, he’ll drive home in an attempt to get an hour-and-a-half of sleep, change his clothes and return to work. Sleeping on a couch in the office is a “fatal mistake,” he said.

Only two things can keep him going.

“Adrenaline and coffee,” Idsinga laughed.

Doubt it. That house borders on to a busy road. Cant see him burying a body in that front yard righting front of neighbours, family and motorists.

Some Pride parade attendees plan to wear black this year following arrest of alleged serial killer
There is growing momentum behind a grassroots campaign to get members of the LGBTQ community to wear black to this summer’s Pride parade following the arrest of an alleged serial killer who is charged with the murders of six men with ties to the gay village.

Toronto resident Jesse Lutersz has set up a Facebook event to encourage those attending the annual parade to wear black in order to “honour those we have recently lost, as well as those who we may never find or identify.”

Lutersz first posted the event to Facebook on March 5 and since then about 148 people have confirmed their attendance while another 687 have said they are interested in participating.

“Pride is our community’s largest event, it’s where we stand shoulder to shoulder with people from around the world to celebrate how far we’ve come and to acknowledge how far we still have to go. This year the parade takes on a tremendous significance as the largest event our community will have since the news broke of a serial killer targeting us,” Lutersz told CP24.com via email. “By organizing this passive demonstration we are able to effectively spread a message against violence while also showing solidarity with those we’ve lost to it. The Pride parade is usually quite colourful and we think the juxtaposition of many folks wearing black will send a strong message.”

I agree, which is why I would break the boulder. If residents saw it appear with no mention of a forklift or backhoe, it's possible it's not as dense as we all assume a boulder to be. Man made boulders are nothing new so unless a geologist can confirm that it's a pure mineral, I would start chipping away at it.

I doubt there is anything there. Its not really a 'boulder', its more of a rock someone has picked up on a road trip. Probably liked it because of the texture feature.

If its also near a main road, very, very unlikely for the reasons stated by Andreww ^^^^

Even the house is rather plain, easy to keep front yard with a rock feature. Maybe they put some annuals in in the spring. sure hope so. lol

Bruce McArthur /// Toronto’s Missing Men /// Part 1

Part 1 of 2
www.TrueCrimeGarage.com
Episode 191 - We first became aware of this case in the second half of last year. Loyal Garage listeners were emailing and bringing attention to the strange situation up in Toronto. For nearly eight years men had been practically disappearing right off of the streets of Toronto. This didn’t go unnoticed by police. In fact the police opened two major investigations to address the situation. The problem, neither investigation provided any answers. Until January, 2018 when the cases of Toronto’s missing men broke wide open. This week we discuss the continuing investigation into Canada’s most recent and very prolific serial killer.

I agree about breaking up the boulders and any other suspicious garden features. I still find it hard to believe that such a large amount of human remains stayed undetected by wild or domestic animals or humans in relatively shallow planters. It does make me wonder if they were disguised/treated/encased in some sort of covering/substance, ie lime is often used in gardening. And often people place large stones, broken clay pot pieces in the bottoms of planters for drainage.

He may have used pesticides to keep wildlife away - some pesticides last for a few years in the soil.

Most pesticides have been banned, years ago, in Toronto and most areas of Ontario.
By covering them with soil, he prevented humidity, sun, air and heat from decomposing the body parts thus preserving them.

Normally, there are not bugs in planter soil. Its pretty 'sterile', even the fertilizers are 'sterile' so that they don't attract animals and gardeners do not like the smell of natural fertilizers.

Someone posted that they walked their dog by Mallory a couple of times daily and not once did their dog pay attention to the planters.

No decomposition, no bad odours.

Headline:

Mayor Tory confirms police board, not chief, will initiate missing-persons review

Community members worried that a review initiated by the police chief, rather than the board, would not be truly independent.

Body of article:

After community groups raised concerns about police involvement in a proposed external review of missing-persons cases, Mayor John Tory and Toronto police confirm it will be the civilian board officially initiating the independent probe when it meets next week — not the chief.

In a statement Friday, Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders responded to mounting criticism about his force’s handling of the ongoing investigation into alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur, including criticism over the revelation that McArthur was questioned by police in 2016 but let go.

Calling the concerns raised “serious enough to warrant a review,” Saunders announced that he would be “pursuing an independent external review,” with the support of Tory and police board chair Andy Pringle.
The remarks prompted concerns from community members that a review initiated by the chief would not be truly independent. In a statement released hours after Saunders’, the Alliance for South Asian Aids Prevention (ASAAP) criticized the chief’s language, saying the independent review must be commissioned not by Toronto police but by its civilian board, “whose scope and procedure is determined with direct representation from the LGBTQ community.”

In a statement to the Star this week, a spokesperson for Tory said when the mayor presents a motion for an external missing-persons review next week, it will be “very clear” that the board is making the request.

Pringle told the Star that he didn’t think it mattered who initiated it, but later said in a statement that the review will be commissioned by the board. He stressed that Saunders suggested the review “as early as a number of weeks ago.”

Meaghan Gray, Toronto police spokesperson, said the service supports an external report commissioned by the board. In his statement Friday, Saunders said the review should consider the force’s investigative processes as well as systemic issues of bias.

Shakir Rahim, a board member with ASAAP, said the group is pleased the probe will be formally requested by the board, emphasizing that the review “must be guided and informed by the communities calling for accountability and change.

It is also important that the Toronto Police Service provide unfettered access, subject to legally required restrictions, to any records that may be relevant for the review." Rahim said in a statement on Tuesday. ..”

(the rest is a recap)

BUT TORY IS ON THE BOARD! After he stood up for Saunders (and all the other things against him) does this make it better?

There was a show about Serial Killers with two retired FBI agents, brothers, on The Agenda tonight.

It repeats at 5am for those who can PRV or tape it. Worth watching IMO

Only caught snippets but they seemed to think BM would have been at his peak between late 20s and mid forties, age wise.

Those are the years, I believe, when he was a travelling salesman across central/northern Ontario.

This could/will take years to sort out but they emphasized that all of the police forces need to be on some data program that cross references lost and missing people and there was discussion about how to NOT become a victim of a serial killer. Very interesting.

TVO may also run videos after the screening date, not sure.
