This makes sense that this was not Cathy as the last article makes no mention of her car, which was also missing. I'm not fully confident of the reliability of the FB comments though, so I'll take a look for the obituaries you mentioned. What is the exact date I should be searching for?

It's strange and perhaps misleading that the Niagara Falls Review has the last article linked only to the Cathy Pietz articles as a related story.

The body recovered from the canal on September 27, 2014 was not Cathy. It was an elderly woman who had recently lost her husband (as seen in the comments from this FB article). Obituaries from the same time period support this. It appears that Cathy is still missing.

Yes it seemed pretty misleading having the two cases somewhat connected (Welland Canal). I was wondering about her car also, but figured the reporters failed to mention it as the importance was moreso the person. MOO.

A red Pontiac with a body inside has been found in the Welland canal. I can't link but if you Google the welland tribune its on their front page.

Read this article yesterday and the first person I thought of was CP. The description of the car fits her car and the body found inside was that of a female. And so close to home. There is a vehicle pathway leading down to the canal which is apparently where the car entered the water. Interesting to see there is no fence or barriers up along the roadway and pathway which would stop vehicles from entering the water. Foul play, suicide or accident? MOO.

The Peitz family who live just off of Forks road, a few hundred metres from the scene...

Official statement from Niagara Regional Police:

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 3 District - Welland CIB office and the NRPS Forensic Services Unit working with the Office of the Coroner have positively identified the body found in the car to be Cathy Jean Pietz.

Ms Pietz had been reported missing in December of 2013. Foul play is not suspected in her death.
