Trudeau asks Canadians to 'hang in there' in vaccines vs variants race

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday urged pandemic weary Canadians to "hang in there" a few more weeks as the country's vaccine rollout accelerates but Covid-19 variants surge.

"We're in a situation where everyone is exhausted," Trudeau told a news conference. "This has been a very, very long year."

Covid-19 Variant From Brazil Has Taken Hold in Canada
The province of British Columbia is struggling to contain the variant, which is more contagious and is sending younger patients to hospitals

“LIMA, Peru — With a sense of dread, the doctor watched the patients stream into his intensive care unit.

For weeks, César Salomé, a physician in Lima’s Hospital Mongrut, had followed the chilling reports. A new coronavirus variant, spawned in the Amazon rainforest, had stormed Brazil and driven its health system to the brink of collapse. Now his patients, too, were arriving far sicker, their lungs saturated with disease, and they were dying within days. Even the young and healthy didn’t appear protected.

The new variant, he realized, was here.

“We used to have more time,” Salomé said. “Now, we have patients who come in and in a few days they’ve lost the use of their lungs.”

The P.1 variant, which packs a suite of mutations that make it more transmissible and potentially more dangerous, is no longer just Brazil’s problem. It’s South America’s problem — and the world’s.“

“Doctors say they're seeing younger patients with the disease — aged 20 to 50 — requiring critical care, in contrast with predominantly elderly people who got badly sick during the first year of the pandemic.“

The reporters *kill* me. Last time we had a lockdown, they were grilling him, 'WHY didn't you do it sooner, WHY did you give so much notice, aren't you putting peoples' lives at risk, etc.' This time, he announces a lockdown at midnight tonight.. no notice.. and they're asking him, 'why no notice'. Gotta lovem. jmo.

Everyday reasons more likely to cause brain clots than the AstraZeneca vaccine
If the argument for getting a stroke because it serves the greater good doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in taking the vaccine, it’s worth noting that the odds of having brain clots in everyday life are much higher. The chance of having a blood clot with AstraZeneca is between one in 100,000 to one in a million, according to recent findings. Smoking, job stress and visiting thechiropractor carry a much greater risk.

‘First-dose-first’: Panel reassures Canadians 16 weeks between COVID-19 vaccine shots is safe
Critics say the strategy is a risky, population-level experiment in Canada

Protection from the first dose of a two-dose series can last at least six months and a longer interval between shots generally results in a better immune response after the second, booster dose, said Dr. Shelley Deeks, co-chair of the independent advisory panel.

That's a reality check! I now have my answers about what more transmissible and more deadly means. More transmissible means fewer virus particles are needed to make someone sick, and those few particles are capable of infecting multiple cells simultaneously. More deadly means a few days, rather than 3 weeks, between infection and death - for those unable to fight the virus.

Another thing, my friend cousin Otto, is that the “spike” attaches to the cells. (Eta also lungs specifically, I saw on a recent video jmo, can’t remember which one):

“The mutation, they found, makes the spikes more stable than those on the original virus. As a result, more functional spikes are available to bind to our cells’ ACE2 receptors, making the virus more infectious.“

Thank you, that was very interesting. 'Dr. Darren Marklin(sp?)' noted starting around 5:46 that 'vaccination immunity looks far more robust than the natural immunity from the original infections', and at 6:56 he says the P1 mutation/variant acts more like an airborne virus as opposed to droplet based, which was thought to be the case originally when Covid started. Also, that they're seeing 100% of households get infected, as opposed to what was seen earlier when transmission was significantly less.

Very sad to hear that the virus was allowed to go unchecked in a vulnerable population, and that is the reason the virus was able to mutate to the point where it is much more effective in attacking us. P1, in particular, from Brazil ... we know why it happened there.

Also bad news that this new variant can make people sick even though they've already had the milder (although still deadly) original version of the virus.
