Lots of strangers here in my little community this weekend, many of them visiting family. I hope they don't go into shops and their hosts self-quarantine, but is that likely?

The crazy thing is, we have far more cases right now than last Easter, when people mostly stayed home. This is definitely going to be a bad spring, IMO.

Masks that contain graphene should have the substance labeled on the packaging. From a bit of research, my understanding is that masks that are blue on one side and grey on the other likely contain graphene. Masks that are white and blue are safe.

Health Canada issued the notice on Friday and said wearers could inhale graphene, which may be dangerous for the lungs."​

This new-variant wave concerns me. I can't stop thinking about the second wave in the 1918 pandemic, a new-variant wave that was more deadly to a different age group. The difference is that in 1918, the first wave was deadly to people 20-40, the second wave was deadly to people over 50.

My impression is that we first see numbers explode in Ontario, Quebec and BC, then the rest of the country catches up 2 weeks later. For me, that means taking more precautions today and scheduling appointments for no sooner than 4 weeks from now - so I can see whether we have another peak.

I was at a coffee shop on the weekend for a takeout coffee. The man in front of me, with a South American accent, had no mask. The two boys (age about 12) behind me both wore masks. The woman and her 5-6 year old daughter behind them had no masks. The owner of the coffee shop was not wearing a mask.

Picking up a gourmet coffee is a rare treat for me. I won't do it again for a few months. I was very surprised at the absence of masks, but it demonstrates how relaxed too many people are about mask use.

Messaging about the vaccine here is very confusing. I called health services today and I'm not eligible yet. The person on the phone said that scheduling vaccines is like working with the stock market - information changes on a daily basis.

I suspect I have to ride out this wave without a vaccine. I know people who had the first shot in March, they are being told they may have to wait until October for the second shot. Canada has been a mess with vaccines. Since WW2, Canada viewed itself as the little sister of the USA - protected. The pandemic has made it clear that Canada has to look after itself, which has left the country vulnerable regarding access to vaccines.
