I was able to read it here: Peeved Canadian snowbirds devising plans to avoid hotel-quarantine ‘jail’ -

Ridiculous. You'd think these people knew nothing about the government asking its citizens NOT to travel during the past several months?

thanks for the link
I have no sympathy for these people - if they can't afford the $2000, then they can bloody well sell their extra house - I'm pretty sure they wasted at least $2000 travelling there when they should've stayed home

Why does it cost over $2000 to stay in a 'government approved hotel' for 3 nights anyway?

Staff will be required to sanitize before and after any contact with people who may be bringing covid variants into Canada. That's costs extra. Rooms will have to be sanitized, not just cleaned, before and after each guest's stay.

I read the article last night about managers at care homes taking vaccines for their families, claiming that the vaccines will expire and go to waste so why not.

I'm unimpressed with what is happening with the vaccines in Canada. First there were groups of people, like athletes, high density residents and etc. claiming that they deserve priority for vaccines, and now those in a position of authority are sneaking away with vials of the vaccine for their family. We saw that already in BC where administrators in the medical system were putting themselves at the top of the list.

It's clear that the vaccines are in the wrong hands, and more government oversight is needed to ensure that the vaccines are delivered per protocol. The medical community cannot be trusted to manage the vaccine distribution.

Is anyone noticing that some people that you thought were critical thinkers are now talking about the virus as a complete hoax intended to overhaul social order and give governments complete communist control over populations?

I recently heard from a friend, whom I've known for a decade, who is increasingly adhering to conspiracy theories, thinking that the government is hiding information, that the government is the enemy, that the only way to get sick is through direct physical contact, and that the covid thing is an overblown hoax that is only a problem for people with pre-existing conditions who were going to die this year regardless of the virus. When I said that some people die without pre-existing conditions, the response is that the deceased had undiagnosed conditions.

Some people seem to believe that Canadian doctors get paid to state official cause of death as covid - that doctors are falsely stating cause of death as covid for personal financial gain. It has left me wondering how many people with covid fatigue are gravitating towards conspiracy theories and absence of objectivity as a conduit to vent their frustrations.

YES, and it's torn my own family apart. Literally.

It's a hoax, it was manufactured & released intentionally, masks don't work, masks make you more suspectable to other illnesses, it's been in the US and Canada for longer than what we've been told, the government wants full control of every aspect of your life, there are "re-education camps" being set up, the vaccines carry micro chips that alter your DNA, all deaths are classified as covid related even if they're not, so the government can say "see, look at the numbers go up!" and that bolsters their position, and if you don't agree with all of that stark raving malarky, then come all the insults, condescending remarks, hurtful accusations, etc., so forth and so on. With no apology. Those that do not agree are part of the problem. :(

And all of this coming from folks I once greatly admired, who were in fact some of the smartest, critical thinkers I've ever known. It's not covid fatigue because they started latching on to all this garbage very early last spring. Spending ALL their time online (twitter, mostly) just soaking up all the conspiracy theories and spreading them just as much as possible.

I told my kids at the very beginning of this, this crisis is going to bring out the very best in people, and sadly, the very worst. Sure enough, we've all seen both. I try my hardest every day, to let my legacy be on the "very best" side of history. Sadly, yet one more casualty of covid has been my family. We will not come out of this the same way we went into it, and it's heartbreaking. Sorry for the rant, it's just something I have to live with every day. It's been entirely miserable.

And just FYI, I really appreciate everyone's posts here. I read them all every day doing my best to stay informed.

Don't worry about the rant. Rants sometimes help keep us sane.

Yes! The conspiracy ideas are starting to come from people whom I always viewed as well balanced and critical thinkers.

The conspiracy theories are based on personal belief rather than logic. For each bizarre claim, such as Canadian doctors profit when they falsely list covid as cause of death, there's a bizarre answer and then they jump to another bizarre claim - as though 10 strange claims will be more convincing than one. There's no option to discuss whether the claims and explanations are logical.

There's also an implication that disagreement means we're just not with it, simply ignorant of reality.

I feel uncomfortable when people make statements about covid that sound like paranoia about government schemes to trick Canadians. It seems like a slippery mental health situation. It worries me because knowing even one person who thinks like that tells me that there are a lot of people who find it easier to believe that a pandemic is fake rather than face the sad reality we have today.

Why returning travellers will pay $2000 per person for quarantine:

"Many people have questioned how a three-day stay in a hotel could total $2,000. The government says the amount would also cover related expenses, such as the cost of the test, transportation, hotel security and added health protections for hotel staff. Presumably, meals would be included as well

"It's not just simply the cost of a hotel room," Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said on Jan. 29.

He said travellers shouldn't balk at the price tag.

"We think that if they're going to make that choice [to travel], that they should bear the full cost and responsibility of all the measures that are necessary to keep Canadians safe."
