Snowbirds who flew south for the winter became targets of a social media backlash - Macleans.ca

Sounds like a nice couple who were responsible about all their decisions.

Yes, except for their complaint regarding how the Canadian government is managing people who take holidays during pandemic. They seem to think that they should be exempt from enforced isolation rules upon return to Canada on the basis that they wear masks, visit with other families one at a time, and have been vaccinated. Surely they know that being vaccinated does not mean they cannot be infected and contagious.

If they want to travel, they can. When they return to Canada, Canadian rules apply. If they don't like Canadian rules, they can stay at their holiday home in the USA.

That's serious. Does that mean that the health care system is nearly overwhelmed?

It sounds like medical practitioners have a digital tool that correlates, for example, age and pre-existing conditions in the context of who is most likely to survive. Rather than personally assess covid patients for triage, they can blame the tool? I have read that it appears that the 40-70 age group is most effected by this new variant wave.

This seems like the second wave - not the third, fourth, fifth, nth wave that is artificially created by lockdown - but the actual second wave is now, and it is a more deadly wave of the pandemic (like 1918).

What should we take away from reports about the AstraZeneca vaccine? People aged 55 - 64 should have the vaccine because they are not susceptible to blood clots?

The messaging makes no sense. Ignoring the March 1, 2021 report, are we to believe that it only causes blood clots in people under 55?

"Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is expected to recommend today a pause in the use of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine on those under the age of 55 because of safety concerns, sources told CBC News.

The updated guidelines will be issued later today, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The expected change in guidance comes following reports of rare blood clots in some immunized patients.

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine 'not recommended' in people 65 and older: NACI
Just wanted to note that the above quoted text is from the March 1st linked article. The article on March 29th:

After Health Canada approved the shot for all adults, NACI recommended the product be used only on people under the age of 65, citing a dearth of clinical trial data on the vaccine's effectiveness in older people.

NACI changed course earlier this month after reviewing three "real-world studies," saying the two-dose viral vector vaccine can and should be used on seniors.

and

Asked why the shot is still recommended for people over the age of 55 given the many unknowns, Dr. Caroline Quach-Thanh, the chair of NACI, said the early data indicate that the rare blood clots are most common in younger people.

She said older Canadians should take whatever vaccine they can get because contracting COVID-19 poses a much greater health risk to them than the outside chance of developing this sort of blood clot.

"If you look at this overall, it's a vaccine that prevents complications and deaths. We're trying to contrast the risks and benefits," she said.
