Children's viruses that disappeared during pandemic lockdowns are back, doctors say

As children emerge from their homes after COVID-19-related lockdowns, common viruses that all but disappeared during the pandemic are re-emerging too, doctors say.

"This time of year in pediatric hospitals, it's usually quiet," said Dr. Fatima Kakkar, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal. "But now we're seeing a surge of respiratory infections."

Fully vaccinated Americans could be allowed into Canada by mid-August, Trudeau says

Canada is getting ready to welcome the world again, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau quietly indicated late Thursday as his office disclosed a target of mid-August for when the border might reopen for fully vaccinated Americans.

I saw a headline today that said scabies is one of the known side effects of covid. Some people have complained of an unusual post-covid rash; apparently successfully treated with scabies treatment.

My son told me that his 26 year old room mate had scabies two weeks ago. I said it was odd for someone so young to have scabies (typically a 50+ virus), but knowing that it is a side effect of covid suggests that my son's roommate has had covid.

I can't remember where I saw it - perhaps it's something that is not widely acknowledged? Has anyone else seen an article connecting post-covid rash with scabies?

Weird. I found this: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/dth.13662

Otto, where did you get the information about it being a 50+ issue and viral in nature?

CDC states it can happen in childcare settings but does not say it’s
viral nor age related.

I thought scabies was a burrowing mite that causes intense itching and is mostly picked up from skin to skin contact.

Perhaps the COVID related version is different?

Thanks for any information.

I feel a bit dumb. I meant shingles, but somehow wrote scabies. Sorry for the confusion. No wonder I was having trouble finding the link!

It looks like there is no connection - coincidence.

^^^^

I only itched for three hours after reading up on scabies. Ugh

Nothing that wasn’t cured with Benadryl. :D

Shingles is the same virus as chickenpox. It lays dormant for years in the host.

There are vaccines for shingles.

Back to COVID.

My neighbour did some errands today and says hardly anyone is masked, no one is following the arrows in the store and there was very little distancing happening.

Some people, mainly men, were doubling back turning in the aisle for something they forgot or wanted to see.

Seems some folk think it’s over and done with……ho hum.

I'm noticing the same. People seem to believe that double vaccine means they are safe from covid, that the worst that will happen is minor symptoms. I suppose we'll know more in a few weeks.

Canada to open border to fully vaccinated US citizens on Aug. 9 (clickondetroit.com)

Travelers must still follow some safety protocols

Fully vaccinated United States citizens will be allowed to cross the border into Canada starting Aug. 9.

U.S. residents who have been vaccinated with Canadian-authorized COVID-19 vaccines -- Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson or AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD -- will be allowed to enter Canada for nonessential travel without quarantining, according to public health officials. At least 14 days must have passed since receiving the final dose of an approved vaccine for visitors to enter Canada.

Travelers will have to provide proof of vaccination, be asymptomatic and present a negative COVID-19 molecular test before entering...

Since the U.S. vax card is easier to forge than a library card, I suspect the negative test is the true gatekeeper.
