Newspaper investigation claims China hoarded ... | Taiwan News
''According to O'Toole, China had been hoarding face masks and epidemic safety equipment since Jan. 14, back when Beijing claimed there were no cases of human-to-human transmission. However, O'Toole said the Canadian government did not respond to China's acquisition campaign despite it being well-known among military and emergency service circles.

According to Cooper, while Canada was shipping more than 14,500 kilograms of protective clothing, face masks, goggles, and gloves to China, Chinese community organizations and business groups in Canada bought and shipped at least 90,700 kg of medical supplies to China. He added the stockpiling operation was launched by The United Front Work Department (UFWD) of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), a department in charge of managing potential opposition groups in China and important foreign missions.''

Cannabis shows promise blocking coronavirus infection: Alberta researcher
''Cannabis extracts are showing potential in making people more resistant to the novel coronavirus, says an Alberta researcher leading a study.

After sifting through 400 cannabis strains, researchers at the University of Lethbridge are concentrating on about a dozen that show promising results in ensuring less fertile ground for the potentially lethal virus to take root, said biological scientist Dr. Igor Kovalchuk.

“A number of them have reduced the number of these (virus) receptors by 73 per cent, the chance of it getting in is much lower,” said Kovalchuk.

“If they can reduce the number of receptors, there’s much less chance of getting infected.”

From the article:
In this study, researchers are using a modified version of a standard dialyzer.

It gently removes blood in a much slower circuit than standard dialysis. The idea is that it targets and transforms white blood cells associated with inflammation before releasing them back into the patient’s body.

The research team hopes that these "reprogrammed" cells will fight hyper-inflammation in affected organs like the lungs.

The team treated its first patient with this form of dialysis last week at LHSC. McIntyre says the patient was in critical condition and suffering from multiple organ failure.

"When we started they had a 98 per cent chance of dying. When we recalculated that score now, that equates to about a 30 per cent chance of dying.”

In lieu of a daily in-person update to the media, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, issued the following statement today:

“As of Sunday, May 10, there are 67,996 COVID-19 cases, including 4,728 deaths. More than 31,600 or 47% of cases are now recovered. Labs across Canada tested over 1,090,000 people for COVID-19 to date, with about 6% of these testing positive. In the past week, we tested an average of 26,900 people daily. These numbers represent what we know at this moment, and change quickly. I encourage Canadians to consult Canada.ca/coronavirus for the latest information.

COVID-19 has brought with it as many challenges as it has inspiring stories of Canadians coming together and looking after one another.

Today we celebrate mothers, step-mothers, aunts and grandmothers. This is a day to remember and thank these special people in our lives. We know that the COVID-19 pandemic means that we must enjoy Mother’s Day differently this year, and the most important gift we can give to one another is to protect our health.

We have come a long way in a short time since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared and our efforts have undoubtedly prevented wider spread of the virus across the country. Let’s continue doing what we can to protect those most at risk. Remember to stay home if you are sick and wash your hands frequently. Please consult your provincial and territorial authorities to make sure you’re following the appropriate protocols in your region.

Happy Mother’s Day to all those celebrating, and please stay safe.”

Delivery driver caught spitting and sneezing on doorstep
Calgary family shocked by video showing parcel delivery driver spitting and sneezing
''A Calgary family is warning others to thoroughly disinfect their mail and packages after a disturbing delivery caught on camera.

Michelle Alexander told Global News she was waiting for a package to arrive from Amazon on May 4 when her husband started screaming from downstairs.

“He yelled, ‘Don’t open the door!'” Alexander said. “He was watching on our doorbell cam and so he saw this happen live.”

What Alexander’s husband saw was a delivery driver approach the door. He then appeared to spit off to the side of the home, before letting off a number of sneezes.''

''A number of Calgary area parcel sorting and delivery plants have had COVID-19 outbreaks. Experts say you can protect yourself when receiving a package or mail by disinfecting the exterior of the package, washing your hands and then reaching into the package.

People can also leave the package for a few days untouched, as the virus cannot live on plastic or cardboard for more than a few days.''
