Found Deceased Canada - Dan Archbald, 37, & Ryan Daley, 43, Ucluelet, Bc, 16 May 2018

Another article from today:

“Taken on the morning of May 16, the video shows 37-year-old Dan Archbald walking toward the parking lot at the small crafts boat dock in Ucluelet with a large duffel bag, followed by his friend 43-year-old Ryan Daley. It's believed to be the last time the pair were seen.

‘They're picking up these massive duffel bags and walking with intention into the parking lot it looked like they were walking toward a vehicle that was waiting for them,’ said Matheson.

A few days earlier they had arrived in Ucluelet on Archbald's yacht, Astral Blue, after an eight week sailing trip from Panama.

Dan's boat had been docked down there and needed to be moved, so Ryan offered to go down and help him sail it back,’ said Ryan Daley's sister Lauren Glynn from Toronto.

Matheson has combed the yacht for clues but found nothing.

[SBM]

‘They were en route to Jordan River to Ryan Daley's residence there, which has no cell service, they were going there to surf together,’ Matheson said.

But as the days stretched on without a word from the men their families started to grow increasingly concerned.

‘Dan has a wife and two kids, they'd imagine they'd want to be home with them after a long trip like that,’ said Glynn.

Ryan Daley was in the news a few years ago for putting his life up for sale on Craigslist for a million dollars, including his Squamish home, but he had no takers. His sister says he's a quirky guy and a bit of an exhibitionist but he doesn't get himself into difficult situations.

‘He doesn't make stupid decisions, he's a smart guy and we just really miss him,’ she said.

Surveillance video from Ucluelet shows last movements of missing men

You can watch the surveillance video at the link. As their friend says, their duffle bags are massive. I have a hard time believing they planned on hitchhiking.

This article was updated two hours ago:

“[SBM]

The pair had just wrapped up an eight week sailing trip from Panama to Ucluelet and were headed to the small surfing hamlet of Jordan River where Daley owns a property. They did not have a car, and it's unclear if they had planned to hitchhike or had arranged a ride.

Daley's father, Terry Daley, says they were expecting to lose contact with the two men for a short time because of spotty cell service, but eventually he grew concerned when no one had heard from them.

[SBM]

Daley says it's unusual for his son to be out of contact for more than two or three days.

[SBM]

Matheson says Archbald is devoted to his two young daughters, and it's very unusual for him to not be in contact with them.

Kevin Courtes is the harbour manager and says they arrived three days earlier and spent time getting Archbald's sailboat, the Astral Blue, assessed as he worked out import taxes with the Canada Border Services Agency.

Courtes says the day before they left, Archbald paid for a month of moorage for his boat.

‘I have security footage of them, of Dan leaving my office, grabbing the pack and him and Ryan leaving through my parking lot yes, but that's as far as it goes. They go off screen with their packs. I have nothing else.’

Courtes says he thinks it's unlikely they were hitchhiking given the direction they were headed, but he says they didn't give him any indication of how or where they were traveling.

I agree, too much gear to hitch hike.

Plus, gotta say, one guy has a ocean-going boat, the other a house in Squamish and both have plently of leisure. They're not some broke guys that need to hitch-hike.

Seems to me, if someone was picking them up, they'd drive up to the guys, not make them haul their stuff across the parking lot.

So maybe they'd acquired a vehicle, and headed to JR on logging roads.

ETA: a bit confused about who owns what.

Ucluelet dockmaster Kevin Cortes was the last to see them on May 16 and says they had paid for one month of moorage for their newly purchased boat, which they had bought in Panama.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the pair, both described as 5-foot-9. Archibald is of average build with strawberry blonde, short hair, and Daley has short, dark hair and hazel eyes.” (BBM)

Do we know what they do for a living?

Good question AR!

Back in the summer of 2011, when Ryan was trying to "sell his life", he was a professional cabinet maker & builder, FWIW.

...not sure about Dan.

Seems like they are hiding something.

One of the MSM articles stated the guy at the dock noted they were loaded up with tons of their belongings, more stuff that you'd expect them to have considering the long hike they had to make and the fact that they were so tired. Could they have been hiding something they brought back with them from Panama? ? ? ?

Do we know why the boat was taken to Ucluelet for moorage? Coming all the way from Panama they could have just hung a right at the Strait of Juan de Fuca and been at their destination of Jordan River where there are other marinas close by:

https://www.google.ca/search?q=Jord...!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:1&spf=1527665478682

That was one of my first thoughts/questions as soon as I looked at the map.

Someone asked the “why Ucluelet?” question (amongst others) on the FB page and was basically told to shut up by admin.

I’ve also gleaned from the FB page that the property in Jordan River that they were supposedly heading to is an RV on Daley’s land, not a permanent home.

They definitely don't want to give any more information, which makes me think something else is going on. Possibly illegal.

BINGO- three days to spend sorting out the boat before going 'not home'? Hinky

Musing out loud, after reading as many articles as I can find as well as the FB page:

Mid March: leave Panama on boat

13/5 arrive Ucluelet on boat

15/5 last contact with family/friends (I’m assuming by phone)

16/5 last seen by harbour manager & CCTV leaving on foot. Boat is moored where it’s supposed to be.

??/5 Reported missing (by whom? Both families jointly?)

Family weren’t immediately concerned about not hearing from them because cell service is sketchy. Okay, that sort of sounds reasonable to me.

Sometime on or before 15/5, Ryan called a friend (in Victoria I think?) to ask her if she could pick them up from Ucluelet but she couldn’t.

Did they then decide to hitch? Use a Rideshare group/list? Hitching is certainly commonplace around those parts, but might not be easy with those huge bags they were schlepping, AND they seem to be experienced enough to know that. It would also be highly unlikely that they’d get a ride (whether hitching or via rideshare) directly/all the way from Ucluelet to Jordan River in one go.

Ryan owns land in Jordan River with an RV on it. This is where they were supposedly heading, according to some reports. Other reports seem to imply Ryan was also expected to go see his brother in Victoria.

The FB page also mentions targeting Tofino for flyers/searches & I wonder why, because it’s the wrong direction if they were headed to Jordan River. Although it’s not a bad idea, IMO. If I were family/friends, I’d go ask around at Poole Land. Not because I think they are there necessarily, but because there’s a fairly fluid population of hitchhikers/rideshare people who wander in and out and who might have insight.

I have a lot of questions but the FB page doesn’t seem to welcome them :(. Has anyone found any individual social media profiles for the guys?

Finally, PURE SPECULATION, my gut feeling is that (at least) one of them is going to turn up fairly soon.

Actually, that 3 days isn’t too hinky IMO: they had to deal with Customs & Excise for import duties & taxes etc. In one of the interviews with the harbour manager, he mentions that they wanted/had to get a second opinion on the valuation.

Certainly not on Dan and Ryan’s Find FB page, but I noticed many others are expressing similar thoughts elsewhere.

I found several articles about drug trafficking between Panama and Vancouver Island and though it’s from four years ago, found this one to be most comprehensive:

“Cocaine and yacht seized off west coast of Vancouver Island” (updated)”
KIM BOLAN, Vancouver Sun
Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014

“Police seized 30 kilograms of cocaine and a 20-metre yacht off the west coast of Vancouver Island earlier this month. RCMP Staff Sgt. Duncan Pound said that two Vancouver Island men connected to the boat were arrested ‘on land’ on Sept. 2 with the cocaine.

[SBM]

RCMP Staff Sgt. Duncan Pound said that two Vancouver Island men connected to the boat were arrested ‘on land’ on Sept. 2 with the cocaine. They have now been released, pending charges being approved by federal prosecutors. Their names are not being released.

The drug investigation began after ‘reports of suspicious circumstances surrounding the MV Cedar Spirit off the Estevan Lighthouse,’ Pound said.

The lighthouse is about 50 kilometres north of Tofino.

[SBM]

Drug smugglers have used the rugged coastlines of Vancouver Island for years.

In 2010, police found 1,000 kilos of cocaine hidden on a beach near Port Hardy that had been smuggled from Panama aboard a sailboat called the Huntress. Two men were convicted and sentenced to 16 years.

In 2006, police found $6.5-million worth of marijuana on board a 47-metre fishing vessel off Vancouver Island. Four men were charged, but the charges were all later stayed.

In 2001, a fishing boat called the Western Wind was seized with 2.5 tonnes of cocaine aboard off the coast of Vancouver Island. No one was ever charged.”

http://www.nationalpost.com/m/cocaine+yacht+seized+west+coast+vancouver+island+updated/10208921/story.html

It’s somewhat curious that it’s only a 35 minute-drive (40 km) from Ucluelet to Tofino, IMO.

I am not suggesting that Dan and Ryan are involved in activities like this, but if they are, that could complicate the investigation into their disappearances and search activities.

MOO

I'm beyond perplexed, maybe it's a regional thing.. But this article Surveillance video from Ucluelet shows last movements of missing men
says they had to go to Panama to pick up Dan's yacht the Astral Blue.... But they then hitch hiked???

I've honestly never met someone who has a yacht docked in a foreign country that has to go get it and can afford the trip down to get the yacht, sailing home, and then hitch hikes the remainder of the journey back home... Why in the world would you hitch hike if you can afford a yacht, travel and not working for 6 weeks.. Am I being too American to understand? Is this a thing?

Ok, Did they just buy the boat per your article.... OR
"Dan's boat had been docked down there and needed to be moved, so Ryan offered to go down and help him sail it back," said Ryan Daley's sister Lauren Glynn from Toronto.

that makes it sound like he didn't just purchase it!! Something smells fishy and it's not the ocean.
