Excerpt from above news article:

"Westcoast Inland Search and Rescue joined the search for the two men last week, but stood down over the weekend, according to WISAR manager Garth Cameron."

“RCMP has put us on a stand-by, dormant, state,” Cameron said. “They’re wading through mountains of information and, if something comes out of that, absolutely we’ll respond. Until that time, we’re on stand-by…If something comes up, we’re ready to go.”

Did someone notice them paying for the moorage in cash?

From article (in above post):

"Cortes told the Westerly News that Daley had paid for a month’s worth of moorage before the two men departed."

“[Daley] came into my office and asked what the amount was. He wasn’t sure before that if he wanted to stay a couple of days, but he decided to spend the month. I worked out the numbers for him. He left my office, came back with some cash, and paid me,” Cortes said."

i just finished reading the whole thread, and this is sad, weird and scary at the same time.

If someone saw them they should come out and speak, they had alot of stuff on them (with them) , it's not something that you forget if you see someone with so many stuff passing you. I think they got in a car or something, it's like they vanished after that last camera saw them

in 10 days it's almost a month, the police should spill more things if the know, help the people who are or want to search for them.

Nothing new since that cctv camera was released, don't tell me they didn't find anything else because that is just weird.

His not waiting for his friend made me think they were loading stuff into a car, and therefore the first fellow was just taking his stuff to the car, so no need to wait for his friend. Perhaps they met someone who offered them a lift during the three days they were waiting for their boat to be cleared at Customs .
I agree, they look like they're going to load up a vehicle, first one seems to discuss with the other (who is off camera) who's going to carry what.

This info is a little different, from the recently posted article

“[Daley] came into my office and asked what the amount was. He wasn’t sure before that if he wanted to stay a couple of days, but he decided to spend the month. I worked out the numbers for him. He left my office, came back with some cash, and paid me,” Cortes said.

So it seems Daley'd considered taking the boat somewhere else after doing the import paperwork in Ucluelet. At the last minute he decided to keep it there one month. It sounds like they'd formulated some kind of last minute plan, too bad they didn't share it with anyone.

Quote from above:
"He left my office, came back with some cash, and paid me,” Cortes said."

So, he didn't have the cash on him. Did he walk over to a backpack and retrieve cash? Did someone notice a lot of cash as he was digging the money out?

Or maybe Dan was holding their cash and someone noticed a wad of cash? Could Dan have been talking to someone at the moment who then offered them a ride?

Today I'm pondering whether

- someone targeted them because they noticed they had a lot of cash on them
or
- wild animal attack in the bush (as Sjm_qc pointed out there are miles and miles of dense bush. Bear attacks come to mind.

That would be a lot of cash wouldn't it? To moor the boat for a month?

$6.35 per foot for a month according to the fee schedule for Ucluelet. What was the length of their vessel?

I couldn't find the rates table and don't know how long the boat is, but for nearby Tofino, the monthly rate is $5.25/ft, ie approx $150/mo, and I think Ucluelet would be cheaper.
Tofino Harbour Authority

Both Ucluelet and Tofino attract many wealthy-looking vacationers, boaters and second home-owners. These two <modsnip> guys don't look like a likely target, to me.

ETA: missed the rate quoted above. I'm just guessing a 30 foot boat, it's a common size, can be handled by a crew of two.

Oh, ok.
Not really expensive
For some reason I thought it would be so much more than that

Not that expensive but something I would put on a credit card. But that's me. I have looked back at credit card statements for an idea of how much a sailing trip cost me.

I would use cash for smaller expenses. Unless it was a hundred and so dollars from their "emergency" cash fund?

I’m coming back to the rideshare/lift/hitchhiking thing, as I asked my travelling relative about it (last week - he only just got back to me ), because he knows the area: says finding a ride/lift is “dead easy” around Tofino/Ucluelet to Port Alberni, Nanaimo or even Victoria. Either by asking around on the ground, or in FB groups. Probably not necessary to attempt hitchhiking.

I’m sure LE & families already know that, it’s more for some of us here who were puzzled by it.

I like the sound of that, as credit card would be proof of payment...

Unfortunately, these guys "paid cash"...or so it's being reported.

At the end of the above pdf of the council meeting, there is a report attached by the Harbour Master, Kevin Cortes (the last person to see the men).

One line in his report: "The new security cameras for both whiskey dock and 52 steps will be completed by the middle of March 2017."

I will keep searching for information about surveillance cameras there.

Now, that is some serious and useful SLEUTHIN' Great job!

Wife fears foul play in mysterious case of men who vanished in Ucluelet

She said family has heard of no new leads save the discovery of articles of clothing and a pill bottle that could belong to Dan.

"We've searched the area where those things were found extensively," she said. "Police searched with dogs and our team of helpers searched it extensively and we found absolutely nothing."”

Bringing this forward: it would be helpful to know if a) these article have been confirmed to belong to Dan, and b) where they were found.

Another excerpt from the article giving a few details on the search:

WISAR’s roughly 30-member team put in about “850 volunteer hours,” scouring areas up to 500 metres off Highway 4.

“The corridor search went from Port Alberni all the way to Ucluelet. All the popular camping sites have been checked out. All the side-roads have been checked out,” he said. “It’s a search. You’re always optimistic. You stick to the facts and you do the best job possible. You just do it. You don’t hold back any effort whatsoever.”

Yeah, only reason I thought of it is the somewhat dense bush in the area. There were 2 fellows attacked just a couple of weeks ago down in the Cascades, 30 miles east of Seattle, WA. One man was killed, but the injured hiker was able to go for help; had he not been able to, IMO it's possible neither of them would have been found after being dragged into a cougar den. Certainly not the norm, but not unheard of, and cougar attacks do seem to be on the rise.

Mountain bikers in fatal cougar attack did everything right, authorities say
Dear Sillybilly,

I've been thinking a lot about your post. Until I started searching, I hadn't realized that both black bears and grizzly bears are in the B.C. area.

The following article was informative to me. I understand that there was no spring hunting of bears as well.

Excerpt from the (below) "Times Colonist May 29, 2018" news article:

"Ucluelet dockmaster Kevin Cortes is the last person known to have seen them, on May 16. He said the men had paid for one month of moorage for their newly purchased boat, which they had bought in Panama.

“When they left, they had full packs, so they wouldn’t have been going hiking because they left with a lot of gear,” Cortes said. “I assumed they were going home, or at least in that direction.”

"Archbald and Daley were healthy but tired after a long trip, Cortes said, adding there was nothing out of the ordinary about them during the three days they spent in Ucluelet."

"There is video footage from the day they left the harbour and Cortes said he thinks they got a ride from someone in the harbour’s parking lot, but it’s out of camera range."
