Did they contact family at all in those 3 days they spent in Ucluelet?? I would be sooooo ticked off if my husband was gone for weeks and then doesnt even contact me when he gets back ashore. But thats just me and probably why Im still single. hahahahaha!

I believe so - it was mentioned in the earliest articles that families last *heard* from them May 15th.

Not that expensive but something I would put on a credit card. But that's me. I have looked back at credit card statements for an idea of how much a sailing trip cost me.

I would use cash for smaller expenses. Unless it was a hundred and so dollars from their "emergency" cash fund?

It’s possible (I haven’t been able to confirm) that payment by credit card isn’t an option at the harbour.

From this article (Global News)
“I don’t know why they picked Ucluelet… the importation process slowed down so they were kind of stuck in customs for about three days in Ucluelet.

“During that time, Dan talked to [his wife] kind of briefly a few times… saying he would be home soon and that he would talk to her in about an hour or so.”

Watt said the phones of both Archbald and Daley needed to be plugged in to an outlet to work due to poor batteries.

Interesting situation with the phones. Just curious: Has anyone run into this issue (because of battery issues, the phone only worked if plugged into an outlet)?

I wonder if the phones needed to "literally" be plugged into an electrical outlet, or if a charger or USB connection could accomplish the same thing?
On the boat, I would imagine they had some sort of inverter setup which would power a traditional outlet. Once on land, did they have to go from plug to plug to communicate using their phones?

Yeah, I’ve had an iPhone or 2 which had to be “plugged in” (to a charger) when they were on their last legs, to work. He could also just mean that the phones wouldn’t hold a charge. Which is basically the same thing.

That might've been the effect of the salt air/tropics, I guess. Though both phones failing seems more unlikely.

I notice a lot of confusion in the media about who is who. Dan Archbald, the blond, supports a family, lives in Squamish, and according to earlier reports bought the boat, and paid the moorage.

Ryan Daley had previously lived in Squamish, but moved to Jordan River. He tried to sell his life for $1 million on Craigslist (probably a joke), but seems for real to have sold a nice house in Squamish and bought an RV (property values have gone ballistic in Squamish, close to Vancouver). His older facebook posts are public

Yes. And that seems to fit with some of the comments under an article posted June 4th on the CTV Vancouver Island FB page by someone who knew them. (Am I allowed to say that on here? I'm a newbie, so bear with me, and delete if necessary. :-) )

If it’s the CTV FB page, you can link to it (the CTV post, not the actual comment(s)

ETA: & as Sillybilly reminded me, we can’t discuss the comments.

Dear Sillybilly,

I've been thinking a lot about your post. Until I started searching, I hadn't realized that both black bears and grizzly bears are in the B.C. area.

The following article was informative to me. I understand that there was no spring hunting of bears as well.

https://www.outdoorvancouver.ca/resources/bears-cougars/

Hi Zen. I'm in Lower Mainland, BC (so not Vancouver Island). The bears are definitely out and the grandkids encountered a big black bear about 2 weeks ago a block from our house.

CAVEAT !! If it is comment by the general public, you may give a hint (i.e. "see interesting comment by ABC at 1:45pm"), but it cannot be discussed here as it is considered rumor.

Oh my gosh ! I've never seen a black bear up close.

What a beautiful area you live in!

The grandkids have a marvelous tale for around the campsite!

Oops, sorry! I realize my comment wasn’t clear :(.

May I add another caveat? There are people going wild on social media because they have found someone with an arrest record, who happens to have the same name as one of the missing men. IT’s NOT THE SAME PERSON!

RCMP will need to track down as many individuals who were around that area between the 13th and 16th of May to interview. I wonder if they are pursuing a certain angle.

In addition to having conversations with other boaters and sailors who were moored during that time period, someone could have overheard something said that is important. Voices carry by the water, especially at night.

The search may be on a "standby" but the investigation is full speed ahead.

Do we know whose name the boat is in, how much it is worth, if it's paid for in full?

Yes I see the unknown person on his cell. Difficult to tell if he is Kevin Cortes.

Excellent questions, Sillybilly.

We don't have the answers to any of your questions.

It's been difficult to find out if it was purchased in Panama because
Dan's wife spoke about a boat which Dan had docked in Panama and Ryan went with him to sail it to Vancouver. That was it.

Earlier this evening I found this quote: (from the news article posted below)

"A friend of Archbald, Paul Watt, said the pair had started a business and were importing a boat from Panama as part of their new charter service.""

‘You feel both hope and sadness’: Search underway for missing men last seen in Ucluelet

Then this quote from Kevin Cortes stating they bought the boat in Panama (from this news article):

"Ucluelet dockmaster Kevin Cortes is the last person known to have seen them, on May 16. He said the men had paid for one month of moorage for their newly purchased boat, which they had bought in Panama.
