i hate it that there are no big news, maybe if they paid for a month for the boat, they are gonna appear 1-2 days before the payment for the boat it's done? Maybe they are staying somewhere where they don't have signal and doesn't know that they are considered missing. But why would they not call before going where they went and announce the familys that maybe they won't have signal. Did they call the family when they were in Panama? Maybe if not, this is what is happening too. When they did the payment? 15th or 16th, either way they have one more week until the payment for the boat is over, hope they are gonna come back to it. So many question.

Hi Lilywhee,

I would imagine, being the last person to see them, he has been well checked out by the police.

I wonder whether the inconsistencies are coming from Cortes or from the newspaper articles.
Examples:
One quote is that he said they paid the day before and another quote is that he said they paid the day they left.

One paper quotes him as saying he came out of his office and they were gone. On the video he is outside where their bags are (if that is him).

RCMP have stated that they want to talk to everyone who was there the three days before the men left. It will be interesting whether they hear of an argument that went on but maybe it's just the conversations they are looking for - for clues.

I've just got caught up on this thread and it is perplexing to say the least.

I'm not discounting foul play, nor am I discounting an accident or attack by animal.

However, sometimes people just decide to disappear themselves. I know that a wife is in the picture and children, but it is not unheard of for someone to just decide they want out and they walk away from a life that they feel suffocates them. Then they pop up months or years later.

These two sound like adventurers that get a thrill of living life on their terms as opposed to the confines of a regulated life. Maybe they just decided to go!

I'd really like to know how long they have been friends. I'd also like to know more about the clothing and pill bottle that "may" belong to Dan. Where was it found?

MOO

Excellent questions, Sillybilly.

We don't have the answers to any of your questions.

It's been difficult to find out if it was purchased in Panama because
Dan's wife spoke about a boat which Dan had docked in Panama and Ryan went with him to sail it to Vancouver. That was it.

Earlier this evening I found this quote: (from the news article posted below)

"A friend of Archbald, Paul Watt, said the pair had started a business and were importing a boat from Panama as part of their new charter service.""

‘You feel both hope and sadness’: Search underway for missing men last seen in Ucluelet

Then this quote from Kevin Cortes stating they bought the boat in Panama (from this news article):

"Ucluelet dockmaster Kevin Cortes is the last person known to have seen them, on May 16. He said the men had paid for one month of moorage for their newly purchased boat, which they had bought in Panama.

Welcome Jamtartz!

In addition to Dan owning the boat, I noticed this quote (below). Perhaps the two of them purchased the boat together - Dan and Paul Watt?

"A friend of Archbald, Paul Watt, said the pair had started a business and were importing a boat from Panama as part of their new charter service."

The quote from Paul Watt is from the following news article:

If an animal attack, surely they would find their gear. Seems they had a lot with them.

I'm now noticing many articles mention "they" and "their" boat and this is the only one so far that's mentions Dan's. Maybe it's incorrect.

What we know/don't know about the boat so far (please correct/add - I appreciate it!)

  • Purchased this boat which was docked in Panama
  • Dan's wife stated that Ryan was going with Dan to sail boat to B.C. from Panama
  • Quote from news article:"A friend of Archbald, Paul Watt, said the pair had started a business and were importing a boat from Panama as part of their new charter service."
  • Dan paid for one month's moorage in cash according to Kevin Cortes. Apparently first for a few days then changed mind to dock it for a month?
Question - was this purchased by both Dan Archbald and Paul Watt?

Question - was this purchased in their names or the name of their new charter service (These questions are from SillyBilly - whose name is on the registration?)

Question - (Since Paul Watt has stated they had started a business and were importing a boat as part of their new charter service), then why wasn't it pre-arranged where this boat would be docked?

Question - If Paul Watt was a co-partner/owner of this boat, why wasn't he there during the three days to check it out? I am only asking because I sure would want to see an expensive boat that was going to be part of a new business I was delving into. If only for the excitement of seeing it.

These are just a few questions I have about this. I am looking forward to hearing yours!

Paul Watt was certainly in touch with Dan (especially when he mentions about the ex-girlfriend who couldn't pick them up).

What puzzles me is that if Paul Watt is co-owner of the boat (I don't know that for sure at all) then wouldn't he have had a say in where they docked? He seems to question their decision to dock in Ucluelet.

Excerpt from news article (below):

"A friend of Archbald, Paul Watt, said the pair had started a business and were importing a boat from Panama as part of their new charter service."

"He describes his friend, a father of two girls aged five and nine, as an avid sailor with an ambition to get a nice boat."

“I don’t know why they picked Ucluelet… the importation process slowed down so they were kind of stuck in customs for about three days in Ucluelet.

“During that time, Dan talked to [his wife] kind of briefly a few times… saying he would be home soon and that he would talk to her in about an hour or so.”

"Watt said the phones of both Archbald and Daley needed to be plugged in to an outlet to work due to poor batteries."

"He said Archbald called his ex-girlfriend and asked for a ride to his home in Jordan River from Ucluelet."

“For whatever reason she wasn’t able to do that,” Watt said.

“Both guys are adventurous; they wouldn’t have thought twice about hitchhiking.”

I'm been wondering about Dan and Ryan's cell phones. I know the batteries are dead on both phones.

Can police access all information just from phone numbers on cell phones - for example all texts and incoming/outcoming calls, without having the cell phones, just the cell numbers through the internet providers?

<modsnip: removed quoted post and reference to it>

As if they are worried about the plans for their travel out of Ucluelet. The one thing I do not understand here is why they wouldn't have a plan in place for how they will travel out of that harbour. Maybe they thought they had a plan but it fell through. It says it took them most of that 3 days to clear customs but maybe the process was slowed down intentionally......

Wait, are we sure that Paul Watt is the business partner, and not Ryan?

I read the reference to "the pair" as Dan and Ryan, not Dan and Paul, with Paul just being the source of information. But from the way it's written it's not totally clear which of the two Dan's partner is.

Also, for what it's worth re: animal attacks, everything I'm reading online says there aren't really brown bears on Vancouver Island. In B.C., yes, but Vancover Island specifically there doesn't seem to be any established population (although I've found reference to individual brown bears swimming there occasionally).

Strange that the quote says the home /property in Jordan belonged to Archibald. All other articles I've read, say the property belongs to Ryan Daley. Also, the other articles say it was Daley who called an ex-girlfriend for a ride, not Archibald.

According to the Facebook page Find Dan and Ryan, the two men intended to hitchhike to Jordan River where Daley has a property.

It is odd that the quote in the article says that Archibald owns the property / home in Jordan River when all other articles I've read say it was Ryan Daley who owned the property. Other articles also say that it was Daley who called an ex-girlfriend for a ride, not Archibald.
