new sleuth here...

just wondering if anyone has tried tracking their sailboat before it docked in Uke? Tried this but it requires payment :/
MarineTraffic: Global Ship Tracking Intelligence | AIS Marine Traffic

my feeling is they made a nefarious drop in international waters and were hoping to re-connect once they landed somewhere around Jordan river.

It is odd that the quote in the article says that Archibald owns the property / home in Jordan River when all other articles I've read say it was Ryan Daley who owned the property. Other articles also say that it was Daley who called an ex-girlfriend for a ride, not Archbald.

Two men missing after docking boat at Ucluelet

'We fear the worst': Search launched for missing men last seen in Ucluelet

"According to the Facebook page Find Dan and Ryan, the two men intended to hitchhike to Jordan River where Daley has a property."
I noticed the media get confused about who is who. Daley has the property in Jordan River.

Wrt the comments of Archbald's friend, Paul Watt, or others, I consider them helpful, but not necessarily 100% factual. He likely only knows what DA and DA's wife have told him, I don't know that he has inside information. Even good buddies might not share the insider details of their financial situation.

I think the Major Crimes Unit has the resources to delve into the details of who bought the boat, how they paid for it, etc. Even if it wasn't related to their disappearance, if DA put all his money into it, his wife's going to be responsible for it, and will probably want that money back. I doubt it'll be as easy as she'd like.

I agree, and think that possibility will be investigated by the Major Crimes Unit. I don't know how easy it is to retrospectively track the movements of small boats. They show up on radar while in an area, but I don't know whether all that radar data is saved. More likely a boat's own navigation system saves data about where it's been, though.

<modsnip: snipped quote and reference to it>

snipped for focus

It says it took them most of that 3 days to clear customs but maybe the process was slowed down intentionally......

I doubt that too. There’s a very reasonable explanation* for that given in the Globalnews article which has been linked here:

CBSA [Canada Border Services Agency] was assessing their vessel at a certain value because they had to pay tax on it,” Cortes said.

“He asked me if I knew a boat surveyor because he wanted to see if he could get a lower assessment on it because he wanted to pay less taxes.”

Cortes said he put the men in contact with a local surveyor, adding on May 16, he got a call from Archbald wanting to pay the moorage fees, adding they were packed up and ready to go.

*Anyone who has ever imported anything of value/large into Canada & dealt with CBSA, won’t find this or the three day delay suspicious.

Concerning the boat, re-reading that brings me to the assumption/conclusion that the boat was purchased in Panama if taxes & duties had to be assessed and paid.

I notice there's a DriveBC camera on the intersection out of Ukee B.C.Highway Cams

This is less than 10 minutes from the harbour, and the only route out of town.

I agree; I thought the same thing. It is fairly common for people to put stuff they don't want to claim at Customs on a beach, or attach it to a buoy, then after clearing Customs go back to collect the goods (either by car, or smaller boat). In such a situation, even if someone didn't hurt R & D when trying to intercept the package, they still could have had a boating accident. This is why I think they should also be searching the water.

While both men appear healthy and strong in the video - it does not seem reasonable they could carry their bags for a great length of time. Realistically I think they were headed to hitch a ride.

This is a really strange case. Two healthy men, just disappear? And the driver of the car who picked them up has not come forward?

Is it for certain a driver picked them up? First time I hear of this. I was thinking more on the lines they could've taken a float plane out of there. Just my speculations. I don't know if anyone ever came forward that spotted them for certain hitchhiking.

Welcome Jamtartz!

In addition to Dan owning the boat, I noticed this quote (below). Perhaps the two of them purchased the boat together - Dan and Paul Watt?

"A friend of Archbald, Paul Watt, said the pair had started a business and were importing a boat from Panama as part of their new charter service."

The quote from Paul Watt is from the following news article:

‘You feel both hope and sadness’: Search underway for missing men last seen in Ucluelet
when I've read that I thought it meant Ryan and Dan were the partners and Paul was just saying so. I'm sure noticing many errors and mix ups in articles and at times such as this one it can be misinterpreted and taken a couple ways. Ugh

Thanks much for the welcome. Glad to be here.

Good morning Jamtartz,

Perhaps it is because there is sparse information, especially about the backstory of acquiring the boat, I find so much ambiguity in this case.

My personal opinion is that some of the confusing/ambiguous info published comes from the fact that 2 different families (who are scattered geographically) as well as friends of one or other or both of the missing men have commented at different times and they possibly don’t all have firsthand information/all the details.

It happens. It also happens - far too frequently - that the media doesn’t fact check/correct errors as assiduously as they could/should.

No, we don't know whether someone came forward with information to police, or whether police have any clues from, for eg., phone records.

I personally don't think they'd stand by the road with their thumbs out. I think they'd ask around for a ride, or use social media, or otherwise arrange the ride ahead. They had so much stuff, and were too mature to want to be dropped off with it part way.

We do know:

SAR has done it's best to search the windy, unpopulated highway which is the only vehicle route out of town. I think that's a kind of a 'due diligence' search, that makes the wisest use of resources to eliminates the probability of a car crash/animal attack along that essential route.

The fact that it was exactly 3 weeks to the day since they went missing, that it was handed to major crimes unit (Ucluelet has a tiny police force) would also indicate, to me, they have no leads at all, but that, as time passes with no sign of them, and no reports of a missing driver (or float plane), foul play has become more likely.
