Canada - Dawn Dumont Walker, 48, accused of abducting her son and faking their deaths, Saskatoon, 23 Jul 2022

  • #41
This is looking less and less like an accident while fishing / picnicking, IMO...

"If you can, please take some time to check your property. check your home (or) properties you may have in the rural areas, check your abandoned buildings for anything that’s out of the ordinary,” Stonechild said.

During the news conference, RCMP Staff Sgt. Greg Abbott provided an update on the search for the boy and his mother.

“It is heart-wrenching, to see what the family are going through day in and day out, in an extended search like this … the family are on scene every day,” Abbot said.

He said crews have searched the river from the park all the way downstream to the weir, with plans to begin searching further downstream.

We’ve done a complete land search at the Chief Whitecap park of all of the area that we feel is pertinent to this investigation at this time,” Abbot said.

“(Even though) we have covered the entire area from Chief Whitecap park to the weir does not mean to say that we can say 100 per cent that Dawn and Vincent are not there,” Abbott said.

“The river is a constantly changing medium, the channels are constantly changing. Historically, it’s been our experience that it is easy to miss, that’s the reality of it. We’ve done everything we possibly can to make sure we don’t miss anything,” Abbott said.

Walker is a longtime employee of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN).

The operations coordinator for the FSIN’s Indigenous search group Erica Bowden echoed Stonechild’s plea for property owners to look for anomalies such as recently disturbed soil.

“I can tell you that this particular investigation I think we’re into week two already here and it’s gone beyond the missing person unit. There are a number of officers from other units that have come together to assist in an effort to try to get a lot of these moving parts taken care of sooner rather than later,” Obst said.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron closed out the news conference by announcing that work is underway to offer a reward for information that helps locate Walker and Jansen.

“If Dawn and Vinny are not found in the next 48 hours, expect another announcement, a reward for those who are going to be responsible for locating (them),” Cameron said.

''Sgt. Grant Obst with the Saskatoon Police Service said her cellphone has not been found, but investigators have her phone records.

He declined to comment whether there is a person of interest in the case, but said police are speaking with those who previously had contact with her.

“I ... don’t want to provide information that compromises the investigation in case there is foul play involved,” Obst said.

RCMP, who are leading the investigation on the South Saskatchewan River, have said there is no indication of criminal activity so far.''

''Jansen and Walker were partners four years ago, he said, and since then Jansen said Walker has tried to move away with the seven-year-old three times, including twice to Ottawa and once to the Victoria area.

“I know that is something that is kind of on her mind, so I’m hoping maybe it was a moment she wasn’t thinking clearly or something, that they just went. I think Dawn has resources that she could do that, but I don’t know,” he said. “They could be anywhere.”

When asked why he thought Walker might try to move away from Saskatoon, Jansen said he wasn’t entirely sure.

“Part of it was work related, but I think part was maybe for a fresh start,” he said.''

This is so worrying. :(

I found the editing in the article strange “tried to move three times” “he was a very thoughtful, caring little boy”

Just my opinion but if Dawn did finally move I don’t think she would let the community search for her this way, she’d make contact to confirm they were safe.

Only can think it was a terrible accident and she tried to save her son after he got pulled by the current, but they both ended up carried away, or someone set up a disappearance after causing them harm.

That's [bolded above] is what I'm leaning towards as well. If there was a blanket by the water, makes sense they were sitting close by. A 7 yr old can be very spontaneous and impulsive. Wouldn't take much for the child to accidentally fall into the water.

Or perhaps they were both wading in to cool off and the boy got taken by the tide...she'd follow for sure...:(:(

Erica Bowden, who is co-ordinating the Indigenous search group for the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN), said there is knowledge and expertise that Indigenous people have that make them invaluable assets to the investigation and search for Walker and Jansen, which is why an Indigenous-led search is also going to be organized.

Bowden has worked on searches involving missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls since 2006. This search is particularly emotional, as Walker works as executive operating officer for FSIN.

“We never, ever give up, because every life matters,” Bowden said, calling the current situation “incredibly serious.” Bowden added that any case involving a child is critical.

While FSIN chief Bobby Cameron shared his concerns that no Amber Alert has been issued by police, Obst said the requirements for such an alert require proof of an abduction of a child.

The FSIN has said they plan to announce a reward for information that aids in the investigation.

“We’ll announce it in 48 hours when the time is right, with the family’s approval,” Cameron said.

Saskatoon police staff sgt Grant Obst is with the criminal investigations division which handles missing persons cases. He says the SPS’s involvement is because Walker’s last known location was in #yxe (July 22)

An update this morning on the search for Dawn Walker and her son. It is more than a week since we were last in this room (July 25) learning that Walker’s truck had just been discovered at Chief Whitecap Park

I was also imagining a current could take them under as children can be spontanious. But a couple of thing nag at me about this as they had a blanket out to sit on and as evening falls less and less people are at the beach. Vincent was seen by his father at 6PM so it would have taken time to get to the location where her belongings were found. So say they got there at or after 6:30PM when was the sun setting? If she lives close (town) she would know the currents can be unpredictable so why go after 6:00PM when people are likely to start leaving. It hasn't been reported that a woman and child were drowning for me that's concerning. So either they were there when people were there or were not. If they were not there when others were there then it could be nefarious. Maybe she thought it would be safe to be there close to dusk maybe to watch the sunset and they drowned or something else happened. I feel Dawn was aware of the risks so she would not put herself nor her son in that position. So for me this is puzzling. Was her purse found at the blanket does anyone know or were her belonings scattered? If others weren't around wouldn't Dawn be on the safeside and not be anywhere near the water for her son's safety, IMO she would be on the safeside not anywhere near the water but far away from it but still be able to have the great view. So if this was the case then IMO something else happened which Dawn had no control over.

From the linked article:
"I dropped him off with his mom … at about six o’clock, and that’s the last time I saw him.”

So he dropped Vince off at DDW's on Friday the 22nd. Did anyone speak with or see DDW on Saturday at all? She was reported missing on the 24th.

“I know that is something that is kind of on her mind, so I’m hoping maybe it was a moment she wasn’t thinking clearly or something, that they just went. I think Dawn has resources that she could do that, but I don’t know,” he said. “They could be anywhere.”

Why would his first thought be that she impulsively moved away when her truck was found at a park and her belongings were found on a riverbank? Wouldn't it naturally be...maybe they drowned or they got lost on a hike?

And the less said about the fundraising, the better. This is a case that has a lot of resources, searchers, focus.

I have little hope for a positive outcome. So sad.

I'm think the perp (who was known to them) followed them to the park or knew they'd be there at a certain time, and he abducted both of them.

I think RCMP want video footage to see what other cars drove in between 18.00hrs and 06.00hrs.

I also think her purse and the blanket were in different areas of the park. If I found a purse on the path/bushes, I'd hand it in. If I saw it on a picnic blanket, I'd probably leave it thinking the person wasn't too far away.

MOO.

So strange that he jumps right to saying she has tried to move away three time in the past. That's all I will say for now.

ETA: He also uses past tense when talking about his son: “He was a very thoughtful, caring little boy.”

''Erica Beaudin, operations coordinator of the FSIN Indigenous search group, told reporters that “time is ticking” while loved ones wait for news.

“If you looked at Dawn and her child, they look as though they’re of privilege. They are educated. They live in a nice place in the city, they have many of the aspects that are out there that would consider them a success in the Western world,” she said.

“As Indigenous women, as Indigenous children, as Indigenous people, at the end of the day, regardless of what it looks like on the outside, we are still extremely vulnerable, to go missing and to go harmed. That is our reality that we wake up with every single day.”

Two things - 1. Father insists he’s never hurt Dawn, but LE have confirmed reports & history of DV.

2. Does anyone find it odd that the reward and GFMe are focused solely on Vinnie? I understand that its the fathers side, and that he and Dawn are no longer together. However, both mother and son are missing. *also they’ve already raised 31k and are only offering a 10k reward? I know PI’s / advertising, etc. is expensive, but the GFMe has a 100k goal..

“Members of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations who are close with Walker have alleged instances of domestic abuse at the hands of a former partner. Jansen was adamant he’d never hurt Walker, or anyone else.

“I think it’s a distraction,” he said. “I would never hurt Dawn or Vincent. There’s no truth to any of that, and that’s all I can say.”

Jansen said he’s never faced a criminal charge in connection with Walker or his son. As for why he waited more than a week to speak out after his son’s disappearance, he said he was in shock.

“I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t know where they were,” he said. “I felt like I didn’t know what to do.”

Jansen said he and his family are grateful for the help of Saskatoon Police, RCMP and the FSIN. He and his family have set up a website at FindVinnie.ca, along with a GoFundMe site linked to the web page.

The GoFundMe page has so far raised more than $31,000 of a $100,000 goal. The money, according to a statement on the page, will go toward a $10,000 reward for information leading to Vincent’s safe return, hiring a private investigator, and outreach and advertising to help with the search efforts.”

Yes, I find it all very odd.

Let's suppose for a moment that the ancestry and race of the missing woman and her son are removed from the equation. What we have is a woman and son who were last seen at 6 PM. It is known that she enjoys seeking out beaches and waterfronts.

Her vehicle is found parked near a river. Searches have covered the area between her vehicle and the weir, a distance of roughly 12 kilometres (7.5 miles). Water levels and flow rate fluctuate on a daily basis.

"By Monday, police had uncovered her red Ford F150 truck, her purse and a blanket laid out on the riverbank at Chief Whitecap Park south of Saskatoon."

All of her belongings, minus her cell phone, have been found in what appears to be a picnic settings. Her phone was probably in her pocket - as with most people.

Because she is Indigenous, there seems to be a quick assumption or fear that she is another missing/murdered woman. However, all the circumstances surrounding her disappearance suggest water accident.

Isn't there a history of domestic violence? If so, that changes the picture.

RSBBM - WHY? Would you eliminate gender? Age?

Respectfully, it has nothing to do with the fact that she’s indigenous IMO - I would have the same questions if she wasn’t. The primary reason I question this not being a water accident has to do with the history of DV. On top of that, her ex jumping to the conclusion that she probably ran away makes me uneasy (illogical conclusion considering all you’ve stated about the car, blanket, etc.).

Ultimately, I hope Dawn and Vinnie are safe somewhere. If something did happen to them, God forbid, I hope it was simply an accident, and that no one else is involved.
