For sure not something I thought of over the 3+ months but after seeing robbery pop up as motive and then looking back on reddit, this theory began to take shape.

True, student debt is common. LE must have checked Eli’s financial records for things like crypto, gambling, or large withdrawals, those motives usually lead to intimidation, not abduction.



It's not that consistent because the victim is usually left bound or injured at the scene.

The removal of EW suggests he was a perceived threat to the robbers.

The dog being left in the fire was either a rushed exit or a total lack of empathy.



Yes and alternatively, if not cash or valuables, then potentially digital (hard drives, ledger keys) or personal (silence)



If the perps didn't get what they wanted, EW's disappearance might have been a forced relocation to get information.



Most likely destroying evidence... DNA, fingerprints, or digital footprints.

If the perps found out that they were being recorded, it would explain why they set the apartment on fire and
took EW away. Perhaps to silence him or relocate him.



Robbers who are acting on a debt collection want a victim alive and working to pay them back.
Removing a person from a scene increases the risk of being caught.
The perps must have felt that leaving him there was a greater risk than taking him.



I'd say in this theory, the emotion is methodical - burn all the DNA and destroy the electronics.


Although MOO from the start has been that the fire was set out of rage. A strong need to silence or erase EW.

I really thought you would see holes in the theory instead of rationalize it. Personally, I'm not falling for the robbery home invasion. But that's okay to think about.

Good to see these details added about EWs MSW student placement that started in September 2025.

When I learned via LinkedIn that EW began a new placement in September 2025 with Health & Wellness Friendly Communities, I looked on Ontario social work forums to find out what roles are typically assigned to MSW students.
Some counselling work is done virtually through an encrypted platform but the program itself requires significant hours of in-person engagement with community members.

Master of Social Work (MSW) students in their final year (Advanced Field Education) at Wilfrid Laurier University must complete a minimum of 500 hours in their field placement. This placement requires a minimum of 16 hours per week, with options for 21, 28, or 35 hours per week depending on the schedule chosen.

There is an option for thesis that requires 100 hours of advanced field placement which seems to be what EW was working towards with the plan to move back to NS and finish the degree virtually.

Health & Wellness Friendly Communities operates its main services in partnership with Community Healthcaring Kitchener-Waterloo (Home), located at 44 Francis Street South, Kitchener, ON N2G 2A2.

That's a lot of locations and I guess, as you've said, we are not certain which one he did his practicum at.

I can certainly see that. Thanks for sharing your experience . Absolutely could expose people to risky situations, and it makes sense that you stepped back for your own safety.

Cause of death not released by LE

Family shared on Facebook Dec 23, 2025 that the apartment was lit on fire with Princess inside.
Her remains are being sent to family in Nova Scotia.

We don’t know exactly how the dog died, only that his remains were found inside the unit and ashes sent to EW's mother. Behaviourly thinking, harming or trapping a pet is rarely an accidental or impersonal act. It often reflects intense emotion such as anger, grievance, or a sense of being personally wronged, rather than anything opportunistic or financially motivated IMO.

And if EW is deceased, they are together in heaven. IMO.

I would think that might qualify as a one-sided attachment that could lead the client to develop a fixation and expectation on the counsellor. That fits with the behaviour of this crime, not saying it is one of those clients that did it. Just a behavioral possibility.

Moo..I have been in therapy and to have someone listen and not judge you, is a relief. On the the other hand your therapist or counselor, has a few appointments that day. They will treat the next person with the same compation. People get jealous etc .
Eli seems like a very gentle caring person. I am pretty nice too but I did worry about my house being burnt down when I moved into town. Not all clients like you...moo

As far as fire goes, the 911 was at 6 am and the unit was fully engulfed.

Had it been a slow starting fire smoke alarms would have gone off long before that and his dog would have been barking lots, no?

A 6 a.m. fire report means the escalation happened hours earlier. If mom meant midnight NS time, that was 11 pm Kitchener time. Hours between 1 & 3 am are strange for visitors, but people typically become sad, lonely, vulnerable at that time and if had been out drinking (for instance), that would be the time they might show up.

I agree that a fire in a small studio apartment wouldn't smolder quietly for hours. But we don't really know what occurred. I'd think it would spread, and become noticeable quickly. Otherwise, why set it?

So if the fire was reported at 6 a.m., the ignition likely happened shortly before that giving quite a window of time for emotional escalation of whatever occurred.

This suggests:
• the confrontation or emotional event happened earlier in the night (wee hours of the morning)
• the fire was set after whatever happened with Eli

I do not believe this was a serial arsonist. This was a person who got angry, spiralled and wanted to erase the scene. IMO

I guess being 4’10” and about 90 pounds made EW quite vulnerable.

It’s not known what took place but IMHO during the midnight to 6 am hours, EW was likely asleep or very tired when perp(s) came and not in shape to fight off someone violent.
