GUILTY Canada - Family of 5 targeted in hate-motivated, deadly hit & run, London, Ont., 6 June 2021 *Arrest*

The principal at Fayez's school talks about the importance of continuity for him...getting back to school, seeing his friends and teachers, etc. I absolutely believe that this young survivor will be well taken care of by the community, even though we all recognize that his life will never be the same.

yes well hopefully he can go back to the same school
whichever extended family he lives with might not be in the same city or school district

I'm hesitant to even write this post, but... It's concerning to me that we have ZERO information about why this was deemed a hate crime, with added terrorism charges. Nothing. No known association between the family and the assailant. No links from the murderer to any terrorist groups. I'm assuming there is some sort of evidence to clearly portray that these charges are warranted, or they wouldn't have been brought forward. But, literally, the only thing we have to go on are the words of LE. I am undecided as to whether this lack of detail is in the best interest of the public, to be honest.

''More than 1,000 people gathered in northwest London Tuesday evening for a vigil in tribute to three generations of the Afzaal family whose killings sparked a national reckoning over Islamophobia.''

''Esa Islam, Yumnah’s cousin, spoke about persevering through loss and translating fear into action, strength and faith. He said he’s found purpose and meaning in caring for his little cousin, the lone survivor of the crash.''

''Signs of hope, resilience and determination emerged from Tuesday’s crowd – many attendees donned green and purple colours and held posters honouring “Our London Family,” as the Afzaals have become known. Green is a symbol used in the fight against Islamophobia; purple was Yumnah Afzaal’s favourite colour.''

Thank you for posting this @dotr .
We, here in London, have NOT forgotten.
This family was part of our community. Our city will not forget this terrible act and this terrible loss.

The trial of Nathaniel Veltman starts next week in Windsor.

Jury selection is expected to get underway next Tuesday for the murder trial of Nathaniel Veltman.

The 22 year old is charged in connection with the deaths of four members of the Afzaal family, who were struck by a pickup truck in June of 2021.

He faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Last fall, a change of venue was granted by Justice Renee Pomerance, which moved the trial to Windsor.

Jury selection is expected to take a few days, and a total of 10 weeks has been set aside for the proceedings.

In thinking about the venue change to Windsor....

Yes, London as a community is very angry about this horrific crime, but Windsor has a reasonably sized Muslim population as well and the community is very welcoming and open. The news of this crime would not have gone unnoticed there. In VERY rounded numbers, there are about 16k Muslims in Windsor, a city of less than 250k. And right across the river in the greater Detroit area are another 300k Muslims.

In the end it doesn't matter, since it seems that there is a lot of damaging evidence against the accused.

My thoughts are with friends and loved ones of the Afzaal family, friends and close community as they deal with the reopening of wounds and await justice.

Hate has no place here!

The defense lawyer said that when they sat down with the prosecution they negotiated how many witnesses would be called and that's why the shorter timeline is now expected.
The defense lawyer admitted that this will be a groundbreaking case because it involves 4 first degree murder charges as well as a terrorism charge. I liked that he didn't serve up the usual indignant position of "my client is innocent and has been railroaded" comment. It sounds like the defense will fight this on technical legal terms.

I'm guessing that the terrorism charge will be front and centre in the legal fight.

The man accused of running over a Muslim family in London, Ont., with his truck approached a cab driver minutes after the summer of 2021 incident and told him to "call the cops," the murder-terror trial for Nathaniel Veltman was told Tuesday.
