Canada - Four Killed, including 2 officers, Fredericton, NB, Aug 2018

I was just commenting on the interest those from other countries have in our "media hysteria" as evidenced by their involvement in US cases on this site (since they are defending censorship in their own country and calling the USA unprofessional.) That's what I find fascinating. It makes no sense to me.
In a case like this one, I do not believe it to be censorship. They are simply protecting the integrity of the investigation by not prematurely discussing intimate details of the crime. In Canada, everyone deserves a fair trial.

No link determined between victims and the shooter. Still under investigation. Live presser

In Canada, the details of crimes are left for the trial, not media hysteria.
It can be frustrating when we want to know everything immediately, but I respect it. In the jump to be first a lot of US media will report incorrect information and then have to change it.

At 7:10 a.m. AT Friday, officers Lawrence Robert Costello and Sara Burns of the Fredericton Police Force responded to reports of shots fired outside a local apartment building.

Upon arrival, they found two people on the ground. When Costello and Burns approached the victims, they were fatally shot.

I understand. It is frustrating not to know the details.

Police release name of man facing 4 counts of 1st-degree murder in Fredericton shooting
At a news conference Saturday afternoon, police said they were trying to establish a link between shooting suspect Matthew Vincent Raymond and the couple who died, Donald Adam Robichaud, 42, and Bobbie Lee Wright, 32.

Raymond,48, of Fredericton, was charged early Saturday with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Const. Lawrence Robert (Robb) Costello, 45, and Const. Sara Mae Helen Burns, 43, Robichaud and Wright.
...
Initially, the hospital and Fredericton police indicated others were also being treated for gunshot wounds. But on Saturday, RCMP clarified that no one else was wounded in the shooting apart from the four dead and the suspect, who was shot by police.

Alleged Fredericton shooter seemed 'utterly normal' | CBC News

"A man accused of shooting and killing four people outside his Fredericton apartment building seemed "utterly normal," according to a woman who helped him fill out a rental application."

"Raymond didn't raise any red flags with Aguilar.

She first met him when he filled out an application to live at the building. Aguilar believes he was living alone."

"When he visited the rental company's office, she said Raymond always wore sunglasses and his bike helmet. He cycled everywhere and told her his bike was expensive.

Police haven't released many details about Raymond, saying only that he allegedly shot the victims from an elevated position using a long gun. He was not known to police."

Sounds like a personal issue with the first couple he shot, doesn't it?

Well Ms Wright was apparently in a fairly new relationship with Mr Robichaud, so although there does not seem to be a connection between any of them at this time, wondering...
The men are similar in age.
Maybe just seeing a new, presumably happy and affectionate couple, enraged the alleged killer?
The shooter was a bike rider, the victim, rode a motorcycle= too noisy?
speculation, imo.
New Brunswick shootings: Slain couple had just started their romance - CityNews Toronto
"The new relationship had been announced with a little blue heart posted on Facebook, but just days later a gunman in an apartment window brought it to a sudden and violent end.

For close friends and relatives of Bobbie Lee Wright, 32, and Donald Adam Robichaud, 42, the shooting deaths came as a stunning blow, ending the lives of two quiet people preparing for an outdoor adventure together.

“They were going to go zip lining after work. They were packing up the car before work and that’s when they got shot,” said Melissa Robichaud, Donald’s wife, from whom he recently separated".
“He loved music. He loved his Harley-Davidson".

By the description of Raymond by this coffee shop owner, he certainly doesn’t seem “utterly normal” whatsoever as is reported elsewhere. More like not the sharpest tool in the shed.

BBM

Alleged Fredericton gunman was a 'lonely person': acquaintance
“FREDERICTON -- A Fredericton business owner who knew the 48-year-old man accused in a deadly shooting in the city described him as a "lonely person" who spent much of his time biking and playing first-person shooter video games...

......He said Raymond had been coming in almost daily for coffee from 2010 up until 2017 when Doyle asked him to find coffee somewhere else.

"His discussions with fellow customers and staff turned more political around the same time we had an influx of Syrian refugees into the city," Doyle said.

"I saw him one weekend in front of city hall with a sandwich board sign that said 'No Sharia,' and other anti-Islamic sentiments."

He said he spoke to Raymond to determine how extreme his views were.

"I determined he was ignorant and misinformed," Doyle said. "He really just seemed to be parroting the talking points from some videos he's seen"......”

How ironic is that, seeing some people thought that no info on the man was being released because they were sure his name would not be Matthew.
A domestic terrorist is so much more acceptable.

And more...

Fredericton man accused in shootings was 'recluse' addicted to video games, friend says | CBC News
“.......Raymond grew up in the Sunshine Gardens area of Fredericton and, according to Carter, lived in his mother's basement until she recently sold the home......

.....Newspaper clippings show that Raymond's father, Ken Raymond, died at age 58 after falling off the roof of his restaurant, Raymond's Fish and Chips. His son would have been 25 years old.

More recently, Raymond spent some time working in the produce section of a Fredericton Superstore, but quit that job four or five years ago.

He worked with Hoyt's boyfriend, Jim Whelan, at the grocery store. Whelan remembers Raymond as always being happy and good with customers.

He often talked about playing video games like Call of Duty, and Whalen said it was possible Raymond had a hard time telling the difference between games and real life.

"But I was never afraid of him," Whalen said.

'Something snapped'

Carter was also worried about Raymond spending too much time in his mother's basement playing video games. He described the games as "war and shoot 'em up."....”

An utterly remarkable story by a neighbour, how she was escorted by police away from danger.

How police kept suspect's neighbour safe during Fredericton shooting | CBC News

She crouched behind them as they walked backward. She was escorted outside the building by another officer and taken to safety.

"They went trot, trot, trot backwards with their shoulders right together to protect me," Sullivan told CBC News on Monday.

"That's how they protected me going out… their lives for me."

*****

I thought it inconsiderate to the families of the four victims that the earlier story described in vivid detail the scene of the shootings and actions of other named responding officers including arrest of the suspect. The Judge’s order is not an indication of a conspiracy, on the remote chance someone might leap to that conclusion.

“......An earlier version of this story included information that was legally obtained through documents filed with the provincial court in Fredericton.

A New Brunswick Court of Queen's Bench judge has issued an order, prohibiting the publication or broadcast of previously reported details about the Fredericton shooting.

CBC News plans to challenge the retroactive order, imposed late Monday afternoon by Justice Judy Clendening.

In the meantime, the media cannot "publish, broadcast, re-broadcast, transmit, re-transmit, or disseminate" any of the information already in the public domain, according to the order.

It remains in effect "until the termination of criminal proceedings" related to the case, which could take months, possibly years.....”

Accused killer Matthew Raymond had a 'short fuse,' former co-worker says | CBC News

matthew-vincent-raymond.JPG

Matthew Vincent Raymond, middle, pictured in the 1988 Fredericton High School yearbook. (Submitted)

"Former co-worker Carr said Raymond often talked about playing video games, to the point where Carr says he questioned whether Raymond was confusing reality with the games he played.

He said Raymond once told him about several tricks he did on a motorcycle, only to find out Raymond did the tricks in a game and not in real life.

"He talked like he lived it himself," he said.

Carr found it odd that his former colleague never discussed regular activities like getting groceries or going out with friends.

To him, Raymond seemed to be living the life of a teenage boy.

"He acted like a little kid," Carr said."
