As heart-wrenching as it is to read, I'm always pleased when the media makes a choice to expose the depth of depravity of recent child cases. I think many in the general public still have the ill-informed idea that child is primarily "child erotica"--sexualized photos of children or including mid-teens and up. These images can certainly qualify as child but it's so much more than that. It never ceases to amaze me just how many bright and savvy adults have no earthly clue. I guess they don't read WS. Hopefully, this article will pry open a few people's eyes.

Hmmm. I haven't seen a photo of Dusa. Does anyone know if mug shots are shown for Canadians? If I'm not mistaken, a close female relative of Dusa's passed away "suddenly" two weeks ago. Also two younger male relatives are seriously into the "darker arts".

No, we will not see his face in order to protect victims.

Windsor is my hometown, I now live about 45 mins out of town.

Our Canadian laws regarding sexual crimes are a joke, I'm currently trying to find a way to get heard and change our laws...

Canada is not the only country to protect the identity of the abuser. South Africa, the UK, and some countries in Scandinavia do the same. That's just off the top of my head. There are probably many many others. I simply do not understand how parents or victims could possibly know if the man/woman who had abused them has been appropriately investigated and brought to trial. The UK has a history of allowing especially heinous offenders to change identities when released. Outrageous.

I'm primarily trying to learn if Dusa is a man of color. I also learned that a close male relative just died. I have some strong suspicions about some people I believe to be related and it would help to know the family's heritage and/or race.

Being the mother of a large, adoptive, multi-cultural family, I fully realize that knowing Dusa's race isn't a sure thing but it could be telling.

Odd but there's been two recent deaths in the family and another who was a very close (teen) friend of one of Dusa's male relatives.

And yes, I find family members in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota--if I'm not mistaken.

It's absolutely disgusting what you read in the papers isn't it? I was appalled at the reports from the Windsor Star and how they sensationalized this story, claiming "the worst of the worst".
Nobody knows the truth here. I do. I've known Gerald for over 20 years, since high school.
The truth is that Gerald Dusa is not a pedophile and that this was all a big mistake... a huge accidental downloading mistake he made one morning after coming home from working the midnight shift. Ok I'm not going to say Gerald is a saint, but neither is anyone now a days. He liked to download off the internet, off Limewire to be exact... Adult only... Like every other normal guy out there with a pulse and no current girlfriend. He came home, went to Limewire, started clicking on some shared videos and collections of regular . One such collection was a folder named ABC that was admittedly a very large file, but it was in with the other collections available. He clicked on that one, and a few others too. It started downloading onto his computer, he then got up and went to take a shower. He didn't even know what was in the videos, he had no idea! In the world of file sharing, files are mislabeled all the time, it could say this song is by Aerosmith, but then you watch it and see that it's really Guns n Roses. The same goes for videos. He's getting out of the shower and the police are busting down his door telling him to get his hands up and he's under arrest. He's at the door with a towel wrapped around his waist wondering what the hell is going on and worried about that roach he had in the ashtray. It was a special anti-child unit of the police that had been organized some time ago and I reportedly hear hadn't had much success in finding or nabbing anyone in the area yet. Which is good thing right! It means there wasn't anyone with suspicious dealings going on in Windsor, that's awesome! But anyway, they arrest him and say that he was in possession of child . He was as shocked as you are right now. Apparently while he was in the shower, the file downloaded and if you know how Limewire or any other file sharing program works, others can then upload the file from your computer and so then you can even be distributing it! The special police unit had knowledge of this ABC file out there on the internet, and they were monitoring to see if any IP address in the Windsor area was downloading it. They pounced immediately. Gerry had his one computer, an old broken computer in the corner and a couple flash drives/storage devices in the appartment. Only that one file he downloaded that morning had any child on it. Yes all 1400 images and 150 videos on his computer from that file. So yes technically he is guilty... child was on his computer. Inadvertently, all without intent. But he is guilty and he had to plead as such. And he was made out to be a monster and should be feared and ran out of town. He is not a dangerous person. Breathe easy, he has no interest in your children. He is now very frightenned of children and has been sick to death about this whole fiasco and is severely emotionally traumatized from this. I'm not even sure if he's seen the videos yet or he just heard about how disgusting they were and was horrified. This is complete injustice people. This could have happenned to anyone.

Police moved in with a search warrant Thursday to arrest the man. They seized a "quantity" of computers and other storage devices, along with a small amount of weed.

OPP sent investigators here the information they had, and detectives from Belanger's unit picked up the case.

So, no, this didn't all happen in the time it took for somebody to start downloading a file & take a shower... OPP noted the download, contacted Windsor LE, who got a search warrant, that doesn't all happen in a few minutes. And it was found on a "quantity" of computers and storage devices... sorry, I don't buy the 'he didn't know what he was doing" story. Nor do I buy that every normal guy out there without a girlfriend downloads . And this definitely could not have happened to anyone... just to someone who is sick & depraved.

I'm a lawyer. I'm not knowledgeable about Canadian criminal law, though. Nevertheless, it makes no sense that he had to plead guilty to possession of child if it was "accidentally" or unintentionally downloaded.

If this man has zero child downloaded at any other time and everything else is adult , then he should have a defense and should have pled not guilty.

Child pornographers and pedophiles are often known to be the nicest, sweetest people on the block - the last person anyone would think could be a criminal. You just never know.

And while this could possibly happen to "anyone", the guilty plea is a different matter and why I am suspicious about your friend. With all due respect.

This does not sound as if his own lawyer believes he is innocent. His lawyer admits he had the but that he didn't produce it, didn't have too much, showed "remorse" for the crime and was sexually assaulted himself as a child so he should not be given to harsh a sentence. So the "accident" theory is not working for me.

Further, if Mr. Dusa was accidentally downloading one large file while in the shower and arrested as he was coming out, why were there "deleted" files of child on his computer? This makes no sense.

If I was a single guy into adult and saw some child "accidentally" get onto my computer, which I then had to delete, I would 1) Call the police to report it; 2) Be RIDICULOUSLY careful and diligent about what I downloaded from then on in, if anything!

I'm sorry, I just don't buy his excuse. The facts don't match up to his story.

Maybe he never molested anyone but a person who could view and possess such horror is a danger. And it's why there is a market for the torture abuse of children.

I should never have clicked on the thread or the article. I should have known better. But, I did and what I read almost caused a horrible panic attack.

Sensationalized? They were reporting the facts about what he had downloaded. That's not sensationalism (although I wish they had not been so forthcoming or graphic for my own sanity), it's factual. Sensationalism means they are over-hyping a story or showing editorial bias to increase interest in a story. The two articles I read on this don't qualify as that. Unless you count publisher astonishment and horror as sensationalism.

Welcome, Calex. I'm pleased you posted with your opinion and insight. However, I'm going to have to side with Gitana on this. Child investigations typically take months. A search warrant has to be obtained with some pretty irrefutable evidence. This cannot occur while a man is in the shower.

If you care to stick around and do a little research, I think you'll have your eyes opened as to just how many caring, kind and highly respected men (woman too, occasionally) get caught downloading child and trading it. Just go to our search bar and type in the words~child , followed by doctor, clergy, whatever your choice of employment.

We have threads for pillars of the community, clergy, teachers, principals, law enforcement, doctors, therapists and coaches. And not just a couple--hundreds. Their supporters are gob-smacked when they get arrested and say, "No possible way. I know this man." The problem is that they only know one side of the man....not his secret addictions.

When a guilty plea is made, supporters will often say that the man was only making it easier for the victims or his family. IMO, that's a bunch of bean juice as no respectable man who cared his family would allow them to think he was a child collector if he wasn't. In the cases where a child is abused and makes an allegation, no decent man would allow a child to carry the guilt of a false allegation. He'd fight like heck, for the child's sake as well as his own.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you. It must be tough feeling betrayed and hoodwinked. I hope you get some help seeing the reality of the situation.

Gitana's advice is right on. If child starts creeping up on your computer because you've visited a questionable site, immediately call the police. They will put you into contact with the high tech crimes unit and your report will be logged. I've had to do it a number of times due to my research on pedophiles.

As for the graphic nature of the story (which I see has been mod-snipped, and I do understand), I have to give the news source kuddos. Far too many people simply do not know or want to know what this garbage truly entails. Maybe this opened a few eyes, as uncomfortable as that can be.

Unfortunately the recounting of "how" these files got on his computer(s) is just impossible to comprehend, given the amount of files on more then one computer or drive(s).

We just really don't know what a person is like behind closed doors.

Sorry people but you are all quoting the Windsor Star Newspaper, which is known to make mistakes if you know first hand about the story, you know that facts get screwed up when it gets printed in that paper, they are sloppy in their details. There was not 4 computers, and yes, it did in fact happen the way I recounted. Dusa's lawyer told him to plead guilty in hopes that he would get a lighter sentence. I'm telling you that this is in fact the way it happenned. Yes it is possible to download that many files in a short amount of time, we don't know how many megabites of info it was, they could have been just clips all put together in a folder, an hour is plenty of time to download hours of video and pictures take no time at all.
I have no doubt about Dusa's honesty, I don't doubt him for a second, neither do his many friends, it just would be completely out of character, yes, impossible. I would be like saying my grandmother did it.

Just saying that things are not always as they are protrayed and that in fact a special unit that was on the brink of being scrapped, I suspect that they had to come up with something so that they could keep their jobs, Dusa just happenned to be the one they made an example of. I'm really glad this guy got caught and had to go through a huge, time consuming & expensive trial to get convicted (dripping with sarcasm since there is no protection for the victims but the perpetrators get All kinds of privilege) BUT I wish the creators of these images would get caught!
NO one knows what is in the mind of anyone else and obsessions like this occur more often than any of us would like to admit, but the decent person either gets HELP for this or is capable of channeling this obsession into some other healthier form of sexuality that will release the desire.
Sigh... I think most people have their secret little fantasies and fetishes but this is sick and depraved and ALL countries NEED to strengthen their laws concerning such heinous child abuses.

Calex--Can you provide us with links other than the Windsor Star? I do not mean to be argumentative but IME, men simply do not plead guilty to crimes as serious as this under advisement of their attorney. If they are truly innocent, they'd get another attorney or even represent themselves.

I'm afraid that your explanation as to how the downloading occurs and how the bust is made is a bit out of date. The High Crimes Units can now pinpoint exactly how many downloads and just when they were made. Please do some research on this topic as I think you will be surprised at how many advances have been made. I also don't think that a unit such as this was in any danger of being cut. Child is a burgeoning industry and countries are throwing a lot of resources at it right now. Thankfully, it's an extremely high priority.

I certainly respect your position of supporting your friend. He needs the love and support of family and friends right now. But I really think that it's time for him to be honest with all of you concerning this crime. He not only contributed to the heinous abuse of children by purchasing these vile images but he's also betrayed the trust of the people who care about him.

Addictions have a tendency to do that to a person.

Calex--Are you saying that Mr. Webber is lying? That Dusa did not possess the child ? Webber acknowledges that Dusa is in possession of reprehensible material and yet assures us that he neither produced it or distributed it. He also says that there's no proof that it was purchased and yet he does not deny the possession of it.

I don't think it matters how you get the child , possession is still possession. It can be traded, given freely or purchased--it's all the same. If there's disagreement about whether a credit card was billed, I can see a judge taking that under consideration but we are talking about extremely violent child . This is not what is called "child erotica". This is as bad as it gets. I've been studying this field for 13 years and I've yet to read descriptions of any worse. And sadly, the more sadistic and cruel it is, the more expensive and hard to come by it is.

I'm pleased as can be that your friend did not physically produce this nasty stuff but the reality is that he actually did have a hand in the production. Through his interest and desire to have this in his possession, by whatever means, someone produced it. These are real children who have been brutally traumatized and will never be the same for the experience. Mr. Dusa's prurient interest and lust are what caused those images to exist. Supply and demand.

No one is questioning the fact that a large amt of can be downloaded in a short time.

What is questionable is that in the time that he was allegedly taking a shower, LE noted the IP number, wrote up the warrant, located a judge, and got a search warrant signed for the server to determine the address associated with that IP number. They then wrote up another warrant, located the judge and got another search warrant signed to search the address. They then had to assemble the team that was going to the home and drove to the address.

If they could do all of that in the hour he was taking a shower, then I think I want to move there. They sound like super LE!

Child seems like a "victimless" crime doesn't it? Now imagine someone took your picture, took it to the nearest strip club (with extra copies for everyone to take home) and posted it without your permission. Or took the pics of you then posted them on facebook. Would you be upset? Would you wonder when you saw people if perhaps they had seen your pics?

Now imagine you were a powerless child, barely understaning why this was done to you, and as you grew up you grew to realize just how many people may have your picture on their computer. They are true victims and their sentence doesn't end. Because as long as there is an internet, their pictures of what is probably the worst times of their lives are still floating around out there. IMO child viewers are just as bad as the child producers and rapists. Because the more people who are out there willing to view the results of a rape certainly implys approval of what they have done. And most child producers and child rapists don't need more encouragement.

I believe you were told this story of what happened to your friend. But maybe you need to do a little research on what it takes to do an investigation in your area. I'm not familiar with Canada, but in the states an investigation of this type will take time because each step has to be documented, approved and verified. It isn't just something they see then go right out and make an arrest.
