BBM - I believe it had nothing to do with mistrusting LE but all to do with being guilty of murdering JC. JMHO.

Muhab Sultan grew up in London, one of three children to Sudanese-born Sultan and his wife Afaf Elkhalil.

About 2012, Sultan Sultan and Muhab moved to Calgary, where the father says he helped his son start a moving business.

Muhab Sultan kept ties to London, and last year played in a community basketball league while he tried to start a new business repairing windshields, his father said.

His son was arrested on several charges in 2011 and spent 17 months in jail before they were dropped, creating a distrust in police that would prevent him from turning himself in, Sultan Sultan said.

“We don’t know whether he’s dead or alive. Our interest is in getting ahold of witnesses now, should this be resolved six months from now,” said Len Shaw, an SIU manager in Toronto.

Normally, Ontario’s SIU probes cases of civilians who are hurt, killed or sexually assaulted during contact with police.

On Thursday, an SIU spokeswoman said it hadn’t stepped into the Ottawa drowning because there wasn’t any evidence of a death or injury.

By Friday, the SIU decided to “err on the side of caution” and start their probe now in case the drowned man’s body isn’t recovered for a long time, Shaw said.

“It’s not your normal SIU investigation, but we don’t want to lose any witnesses,” he said.

Ottawa police pulled a body from the Rideau River Saturday morning, which is believed to be that of a London murder suspect.

Insp. John Madeiros said a member of the public reported a body in the river at 8:55 a.m.

The police marine dive team responded to a section of the river, near Beechwood Avenue.

Police made the recovery a short time later.

The coroner is on scene and will conduct a post mortem.

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and is handling the case since the man is believed to have been pursued into the river by police.

The body was found about a kilometre downstream from the area the man went missing.

A member of the public spotted the body at about 9 a.m. ET, according to Ottawa Police Service Insp. John Medeiros.

Sultan, 23, of Calgary, is wanted on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of 18-year-old Cook, who was shot and killed while trying to track down his lost cellphone on June 14 in London.

Ottawa police ask father of suspect in cellphone killing where they can find dental records of his son. http://bit.ly/1do3rLk

Have they compared Sultan's DNA/genetic testing with his parents and from his apartment? It's so weird, so Sultan ran into a river because LE was chasing him and I assume he didn't know how to swim? It's was just on CBC news, CA SIU on case. Any word about the other two suspects, has LE identified and apprehended them? I haven't heard anything from news. Jmo

I'm guessing the London, Ontario police don't have access to DNA testing? Or if they do it would cost more or take longer than dental comparison…
And in terms of the river, I wonder if he was the kind who could swim in a pool and wasn't prepared for river currents? A trained lifeguard from London drowned after falling from a day cruise into Lake Ontario near the Humber river recently and that makes me wonder about how well people can swim in these types of situations

Forensics should be able to use MSS fingerprints on file from his past criminal records to identify him now that they have his body. I would imagine that was one way LE were able to identify him shortly after JC's murder. If he had JC's cell phone and left prints or prints on door handle of car and other places. When they crashed the Mazda into the fence and pole, the suspects might have been injured enough and left blood evidence. LE might just have his DNA that way also if they were injured that way.

There has been no word on the other two suspects, just that LE are still trying to track them down. I wonder when LE will release more details as to what role MSS played in JC's case. Was he the actually shooter, driver or both. In the re enactment video I posted above, it shows the driver being the shooter but how accurate is that depiction I wonder. I have a feeling it's only a matter of time before the other two are apprehended. MOO.

As far as MSS being able to swim, he may have been a good swimmer, but in a situation like this I would imagine he was in a panic knowing he was being sought by LE and when he knew they had found him in the river, the panic would have been much worse not allowing him to gather his bearings. One less criminal off the streets thankfully. Again JMO.

These few sentences speak loud and clear IMHO. If you are law abiding people, there should be no reason to mistrust LE. When you have a shady past, with criminal charges, and carrying on in a criminal fashion, one does not like LE. SS needs to wake up to reality. His son was involved in JS's murder, if not the murderer himself. MOO.

Sultan said that while he does not believe his son could be a murderer, previous brushes with the law have left the family with a distrust of police. He said his son was in jail twice as a teenager.

“We’ve had very bad experiences with police in the past, especially my son,” he said.

Distrust of the police??? Come on. Who broke the law multiple times here? Does he distrust the entire Canadian Legal system too? JMO

Why the **** does his son carry a gun??? Law abiding citizen? I don't think so. JMO

Yes, it could be Sultan didn't expect river currents, not sure how fast Humber river moves/if large river...something like Niagara River would certainly be deadly for even experienced swimmers. Jmo/

BBM - Sadly now he somewhat knows what JC's family is going through. There is a huge difference in the personalities between MSS and JC. From one end of the spectrum to the other. One committed multiple crimes and the other had no criminal history. And MSS took his own life while JC was murdered.

Sultan Sultan says he’ll find out Monday if a body pulled from an Ottawa river is his son — the target of a nationwide search after a London teenager was gunned down trying to retrieve his lost cellphone.

“(Police) will know the results Monday,” Sultan told The London Free Press over the weekend, as he braced himself to fly to Ottawa where he expects he will be asked to identify the body.

Police will compare the teeth of the man pulled from the Rideau River with dental records at London’s Victoria Hospital, where Muhab Sultanaly Sultan sought care in 2012, his father said.

“This has been a nightmare. We can’t sleep, we can’t do anything in life until we see what is going on,” Sultan Sultan said.

Muhab Sultanaly Sultan, 23, of Calgary, is wanted by London police on suspicion of second-degree murder in the June 14 shooting death of 18-year-old Jeremy Cook, who’d been trying to get back a cellphone he’d left in a taxi.

I found this video of Jeremy and (I assume) a friend having fun together being silly. From what I've read in MSM, Jeremy loved making people smile and laugh. You can see that in this video, his true spirit. Full of energy and fun.

RIP Jeremy. My deepest, heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family and friends.

“He was honestly amazing, so smart, so funny, always positive… He had so much going for him,” Yavtucovich said, adding that Cook’s friends are especially upset over what led up to the shooting.

“He knew how to make you laugh through any situation, very light-hearted… He’ll be missed a lot,” Richard said, describing him as a “very loving kid” who was a hard worker.

http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2015/06/16/police-seek-3-suspects-in-cellphone-shooting-death.html

“I knew Jeremy when he was younger. He was a very nice guy [and] a happy kid. I’m going to remember him what I remember him as. He was a great kid,” Jeff Warren said.

“He always knew how to light up a room. He always made me laugh,” Brittany Bove said.

Nearly a week has passed since Cook was shot and killed and those who knew him are still struggling to make sense of the senseless violence.

“Just over a cellphone […] when I heard that it hurt my heart. All he was trying to do was get back his cellphone,” Warren said.

Likely not related, but WTH is wrong with people? Was this intentional? Did MSS and his partner in crime in JC's murder plan on hiding out in Ottawa together and had plans on running people over on bikes? Just a thought...and MOO. It's been stated that that stretch of roadway is a busy, dangerous stretch of road for cyclists so...

Police are pleading for anyone with a guilty conscience to come forward after a hit-and-run crash early Sunday killed a cyclist in south Ottawa.

Ottawa police Insp. John Medeiros June 28 2015 cyclist fatal crash

The fatal crash happened on Leitrim Road, just west of Albion Road near the Ottawa airport, just before 6 a.m.

Witnesses or anyone who saw a vehicle with fresh damage on its front end early Sunday morning is asked to call the Ottawa police collision investigation unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 2481, or phone Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477(TIPS), toll free at 1-800-222-8477

It is very careless what this man did to JC and how he tried to run over the officers on their bikes. His family is protecting him trying to save face when the reality is out there. He should have turned himself in instead of running away when he knew he was guilty. I can't imagine what JC family & friends feel, they will live this nightmare their entire life. No one wants to loose a child and especially not in this VIOLENT act. In terms of him getting off on a sexual assault charge, that is simply a joke. Most men get off on sexual assault charges around the world. It is a huge problem in the criminal justice system. I have followed 70 trials and gone to courts around Toronto just to observe sexual assault trials. The man usually always walks free, because it is always a he said she said type of thing and unfortunately survivors of sexual assault rarely make it to a courtroom because they have been traumatized and blamed for being assaulted already by the system. So the fact that his dad says that charge was dropped means nothing. He killed this young boy (JC was an adult but to me he was an innocent boy at his age he was just so young and innocent :( ) Thinking about it makes me so sad, all he wanted was his cell phone back. All of us with cellphones would want our phone back, he did nothing wrong. This man was very angry and cruel he could have easily just handed the cellphone back instead of killing JC.
