If the father's family is in New Zealand, and the father's family became concerned about Kai's wellbeing, it doesn't make sense that the father's family shared their concern with the NZ family if they are the NZ family.
The only way I can make sense of it is that the father's family lives in BC, they have been unable to contact Kai for 12 months, they became concerned, and they contected the mother's famiy in New Zealand.
"Kai has been living in Canada and had limited contact with family overseas the last 12 months. Recently concern for Kai's wellbeing was raised by Kai's deceased father's family and shared with his NZ family."
An 11-year-old boy with family in New Zealand and Canada has gone missing in British Columbia.
