My first thought was maybe she was seeing a man her family didn't approve of for some reason, and she left to be with him.

It's just a shame there are no more details, even little ones can sometimes lead you in a new direction.

She'd only been working at the cafe for 6 weeks. I wonder where she worked before that?

I wonder if it was a planned disappearance and she was visiting her mother for the last time. Perhaps they had a tricky relationship. She stopped by to she her, and her mother was less than cordial, so that cemented her decision to leave?

If she did leave that afternoon, what public transport options were there to get out of the city? Any trains later that day? And to where?
Or could she have got a bus to another city?

Hey there. Kathleen was my great aunt, I stumbled across this forum searching for few answers the internet may have.
I hope maybe some of the questions I can answer can clear some things up about Grace’s personal life. From what I know, her home life was fairly normal. Both of her parents lived a regular ‘typical 50’s lifestyle’, and loved their two children quite a lot, so she wouldn’t have any reason to run away and go no contact. (Grace was the youngest and had one older brother if I can recall)
It was very unusual for a person like her to just vanish out of nowhere, let alone in the middle of the day— so I’m really stumped on what could have EXACTLY happened.
Though I’ve seen similar cases of younger people/children vanishing at bus stops around that point in time, so it wouldn’t be that surprising if someone did kidnap her, or maybe she got lured away and out of sight.
It is more likely than a jealous boyfriend or anything like that, otherwise we definitely would have known what happened to her.
Grace was a very kind and trusting soul, it hit our family hard when she went missing, and still hurts. We kept the newspaper clipping from that day in 1953 and once I find it I will post it here. Hopefully that could provide some more answers?

I’m thankful for all the people speculating about her, even though it’s not many people and that’s what this website is for. Lol

Welcome to websleuths @ Lemmywinkles and so sorry this has been a painful family mystery and loss for so long.

I was just wondering do you know if there were any family speculations or rumors on what could of happened to her?

I find it odd that more people at the time did not come forward and remember seeing her. She had a pea green coat and red shoes and purse. That is a color combo easy to notice and remember as it is Christmas colors.
