GUILTY Canada - Kienan Hebert, 3, Sparwood BC, 7 Sept 2011 - #2

  • #261
I think it was brilliant the way it worked out, even if it was an *f* up! Had heavy police presence been there, the suspect could have dropped Kienan to just about anywhere (safe or not), or not at all... leading to a worse outcome!! So really, I don't care how that happened, just happy they got him in the end!!

IF it was a *f* up that the house was not being monitored as closely as it COULD have been at the time, and if that in turn lead to the suspect fleeing.....and the chase taking longer... boy oh boy, I'd have LOVED to be a fly on the wall of whomever was in charge of this whole investigation!!!!!!!

The RCMP have certainly redeemed themselves with this case in light of recent bad press. I admit that I felt they screwed up by not having the Hebert's home under surveillance and thus allowing whoever returned Kienan to get away, but I am impressed that they tracked him down so fast. Especially considering the vast wilderness areas they had to search.

That is what makes me impressed but sad too. I think of a few recent cases where LE said "they had no starting point" as a reason for not doing more searches. Or they don't know where to look after a first search finds nothing.

This little boy was taken into hundreds of miles of places with the only clue that it was someone who knew the area and backwoods well. Finding his abductor took a lot..and I wish every place worked this hard at it.

He said "what info"... from Kienan. This suggests to me that Kienan *did* manage to provide police with some information / answers to their questions!!

Had Kienan been unable / unwilling to do so, I'd have expected the LE to say that he couldn't say "If" any info was rec'd, or to say that he couldn't say "what if any"....

Kienan has very little speech. I don't know that he is entirely non-verbal but he has been called 'a thinker' by his father. Boys tend to acquire meaningful speech later than their female peers. Children who are the younger of several in a large family (in this case 8, 6 of whom still live at home) will often have delayed speech. Nothing was mentioned about any diagnosed special needs though other than an older brother who was born with a congenital heart defect.

I expect that over the long term a pediatric psychologist who specializes in trauma and PTSD will work with Kienan and his family as Crown prepares it's case.

I'm surprised no deal was made but I'm always skeptical about LE. I'm glad they caught Hopley and I hope this time he's behind bars for a very long time. Unfortunatley, I think he'll get some sort of insanity plea. JMO

n/t I am sure the defense will try it but it won't work. Or if it does..then he is as crazy as a bedbug and will end up in longer than if he was found guilty.

It did. So glad he was taken home and not left on a dirt road somewhere. Don't blame them one bit for not thinking he would be. It just doesn't happen. well until now.

Yes I remember the father saying they would be getting him professional help to get over his "nervousness with strangers" and other emotional trauma.

Criminal Injuries will likely make that available to the family. Or the family may be able to select their own and bill it accordingly.

I hate to say it, but, this whole thing will probably be made into a movie.

It's a pretty unbelievable and miraculous story, and, at least it has a good ending, which is a very rare occurrence on these boards.

Hmmm, that would be kind of cool, actually. Especially if they filmed it down there. It IS a stunning area, and they could use the money that filming would bring in.

I know--why can't ALL these cases have an ending like that!?

The Sparwood Miracle!

I was thinking of it earlyer today. It would be a great movie. I think it has it all, suspense, a happy ending, police procedural, etc. And I sure would prefer it to one on the Pig Farmer.

I sort of wish more people had followed it to see how unbelievable it was. Not just the happy ending but how it came about..the return in the dead of night to his own home.

LE definitely seized Hopley's car, here it is:

Randall Hopley's vehicle is transported by police in Sparwood, B.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011.

Randall Peter Hopley was tracked down by a team of police dogs and arrested at an abandoned cabin near a bible camp in Alberta around 10 a.m. local time Tuesday, police told reporters at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Hopley's car, which police were also looking for, was located nearby.

LE received a tip Monday night that Hopley might be nearby:

But Sgt. Lorne Craig, of the RCMP's Elk Valley detachment, said police had previously cordoned off the area around the camp, and received a tip Monday night that Hopley might be nearby.

Fitzpatrick said several dog units were deployed to the area Monday. They then remained overnight, until the dogs picked up Hopley's scent.

"They were checking old mining houses in this area of this bible camp," Fitzpatrick told reporters. "And as one knocked on the door the dog indicated that there was possibly some activity and the dog master and the police dog pursued that and it resulted in Mr. Hopley being arrested after a chase."

Fitzpatrick confirmed for reporters that Hopley did see a doctor after his arrest. However, he declined to say what led to Hopley's need to receive medical attention.

I think the dog might have been the one to do the "take down" which may have resulted in RH needing medical assistance.

MOO

I don't know that it has been abandoned, just that it was not being used at this point in the season.
