Sillybilly,
Thank you very much. You say you have lost "children". So you have lost more then one? That must be total hell. I am having a really hard time trying to get my head straight with just losing ONE child, i couldnt imagine losing more. As for Femme Fatales posts, i don't know who she is or where she is getting here info but she must be close to the defendants side, as she knew the family by first names that most people wouldn't know them by. And she also added in on a little bit of info that not too many people knew about also. But what really pissed me off about her is that she named the children. And IMO that is a no-no period. Those poor kids are going to have to grow up with our kids talking to them about what happened as it is. Secondly, i don't see a need to go onto a website and just start stating things that shouldn't be posted at all. The trial hasn't even came close to starting and thats one thing i am going to have a realllllllly hard time dealing with. I don't think i can even look at the man that did this, let alone be in the same room as him. Thank you all for your condolences, we need all the comfort we can get at this time.

JB

Maybe the bear angle was not so wild after all!

Bear on prowl in Ottawa neighbourhood

"Behind our hedge the walk is all kinds of paths - a path to Bells High School where kids walk back and forth to school."

"It's a good 250 to 300 pound bear - it was no cub," said Inglis.

Guy Duxbury lives on Foothills drive and spotted the bear Monday just before 6 a.m. - but he said the bear is not new to the neighbourhood. Apparently a neighbour reported a sighting last year.

CANBERRA - Australia’s military has lost its X-Files, detailing sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects, or UFOs, across the country, a newspaper report said on Tuesday.

"The only file Defence had been able to locate was a folder called: “Report on UFOs/Strange Occurrences and Phenomena in Woomera,” a military weapons testing range in the centre of Australia’s vast outback, Carpenter said.

All other files had been lost or destroyed, which the Herald said could fuel conspiracy theories about their disappearance."

Maybe the files are disguised as a cloud!

Impending Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. sale brings end to long nuclear saga
Steve Rennie, The Canadian Press Jun 28, 2011 16:35:00 PM

""One of Canada's largest crown corporations is slated to be sold off in a single-bidder deal conducted in total secrecy," NDP MP Nathan Cullen said in a statement.

"Canadians are rightly worried about getting their money's worth, and that is why we're asking the auditor general to evaluate the proposed deal."

"The company also comes with a deep talent pool that's the envy of the global nuclear industry. Even French nuclear giant Areva — which makes a different kind of reactor — was once interested in AECL for the people who work there."

I wonder if they would still be interested in AECL if Lachlan was still there...

An Iranian physicist was shot dead by a motorcyclist in Tehran on Saturday and Iran’s student news agency ISNA quoted an unnamed police official as saying he was a nuclear scientist.

"Last year, an Iranian scientist was killed and another was wounded in Tehran. In the past few months, the Islamic Republic has arrested a number of alleged “nuclear spies”, warning citizens against leaking information to foreign secret services.

Iran is at odds with the United States and its allies over its nuclear work, which the West says is a cover to build bombs. Iran denies the allegations."

Evolution of Powder Diffraction Software: In Honor of Lachlan Cranswick

While the experiments are conceptually simple, wringing the greatest amount of information from a powder diffraction pattern (x-ray or neutron) is a challenging problem, heavily dependent on computer software. Likewise, education and training in data analysis in modern powder diffraction are important aspects of the professional development of workers in many fields of science and technology. The untimely death of Lachlan Cranswick motivates us to consider his significant contributions to the community, and to assemble a session of talks on recent developments and outlooks for the future of powder diffraction software and education. Chair: Peter Stephens ([email protected])

Invited speakers:

Brian Toby (Argonne National Lab)

Simon Billinge (Columbia Univ.)

Ontario balked in 2009 at the price AECL was quoting for two new units at Darlington Generating Station, reportedly as high as $26 billion, and demanded the federal government lower the price.

Ottawa instead put AECL up for sale, eventually unloading its reactor division to SNC Lavalin for $15 million.

“They’ve washed their hands of it,” the government source said. “They’ve made it clear that they want nothing to do with the nuclear industry in Canada.”

Talks between the province and SNC Lavalin are ongoing.

Video: Strange unidentified object at sea bottom puzzles scientists

Scientists are at odds to immediately explain the nature of a 60-foot round object discovered on the floor of the Baltic Sea. The curious location of the object -- near a trail of disturbed seabed -- suggests that it may have had a rough landing.

Hacking...
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2011/08/03/18506051.html
Security company McAfee, which uncovered the intrusions, said it believed there was one “state actor” behind the attacks but declined to name it, though one security expert who has been briefed on the hacking said the evidence points to China.

Dr. David Skillicorn of Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., said this shows anyone can be a target online.

“The fundamental thing is everyone thinks they are in a nice neighborhood, but when you are on the Internet, it’s like you are walking down the darkest streets of the world," he said Wednesday. "If you are on the Internet, you are everywhere. There are billions and billions of people with access to the Internet and some of them are really bad people who will hack into your system and steal important data."

Homegrown isotopes
http://www.thespec.com/news/local/article/583502--homegrown-isotopes

Hamilton cancer patients are poised to benefit from a powerful new weapon in McMaster University’s nuclear medicine arsenal.

The university unveiled a new $2 million, 10-tonne cyclotron Wednesday that will soon churn out medical isotopes, the radioactive materials used in medical imaging tests such as PET scans to detect cancer and other serious conditions.

I know this has nothing to do with Lachlan, but is somewhat related to dotr's post above ^ ... Would this be considered Nano technology? Wonder what Lachlan would think about this breakthrough.
Groundbreaking Ottawa-based cancer trials show "promising" results

"We are very excited because this is the first time in medical history that a viral therapy has been shown to consistently and selectively replicate in cancer tissue after intravenous infusion in humans," Dr. Bell said in a news release.

He likened it to the 1960's movie The Fantastic Voyage where doctors were shrunk and injected into a body to fight a killer disease.

"Basically that's what viruses are doing – little biological machines that we inject into the blood system," he said. "They move around the body and find where the tumour is – they destroy it, and when the tumour is gone, the virus is gone."
....
"We're still in the early stages of testing these viruses in patients," he said, mentioning he's about to start a second trial with those results out in 18 to 24 months. "But I believe that someday, viruses and other biological therapies could truly transform our approach for treating cancer."

University of Ottawa Heart Institute Trying to Patent New Isotope
http://www.cfra.com/?cat=1&nid=81402

Monday, September 5, 2011

A new medical isotope, produced at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, is in the process of being patented to help with diagnostic imaging of cardiac patients.

CEO and President, Dr. Bob Roberts, says the isotope would step in to fill the void when the Chalk River nuclear reactor shuts down.

The reactor currently supplies the world with 60 percent of the needed isotopes.

Roberts says their isotope could be used at any hospital and would have a much longer half life when they arrive at the hospital.

The isotope is just starting clinical trials in patients and Roberts says it could be approved for use in two years.

The isotope would used by cardiac patients, not cancer patients.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/09/12/france-nuclear-plant-explosion.html
An explosion at the Marcoule nuclear plant in southern France on Monday morning has killed at least one person.

Three people were also injured in the explosion, which followed a fire in a storage site for radioactive waste.

Marcoule is a major site involved with the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, and operates a pressurized water reactor used to produce tritium.

The seriousness of the accident wasn't immediately clear, but the BBC reports there is a risk of a radioactive leak after the blast at the plant in the Gard region of France.
