Well, it certainly seems that working with any nuclear facility in whatever capacity is not very good for one's health:

Two victims in French Alps murder case have connections to the nuclear industry.

Have to wonder who the primary target was in these killings. It seems that Iraqi born Mr. Al-Hilli was also employed in the nuclear industry at one time. Some interesting comments (and now defunct links?) at:

Lemme see ... Areva, Areva, oh yeah ... AECL, Sovka, Williams, etc.

Quebec to shut down its only reactor.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2012/09/11/montreal-gentilly-nuclear-reactor-shut-down.html

Quebec's new government has confirmed it won't proceed with the multibillion-dollar refurbishment of the province's lone nuclear reactor and will instead shut it down.
Snip>

The government of outgoing Premier Jean Charest decided in 2008 to rebuild the Gentilly-2 nuclear plant at a cost of about $2 billion, but stopped work after the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011.

The PQ has committed since 2009 to close the generating station, which is located in Bécancour, Que., across the St. Lawrence River from Trois-Rivières.

A decision had to be made by the end of this year, when Gentilly-2's operating licence runs out.

Nordion shares sink after dividend suspended on arbitration loss

In a brief, separate statement, AECL said it would review the panel’s decision.
The NRU reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, supplies raw material that Nordion uses to produce molybdenum-99. Nordion is one of the world’s leading producers of moly-99, used in medical imaging.

At issue in Nordion’s dispute with AECL are the MAPLE reactors, which AECL built to replace the NRU. The reactors never worked properly, and AECL shut down the project in 2008. Nordion has argued that AECL is legally required to complete the reactors.

Nordion’s stock plunged 43.5 percent to C$5.91 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. B efore the ruling, the stock had risen 17.3 percent over three months, partly on hopes that the company would win in arbitration.

Thank you, dotr. I think it will be interesting to watch the interactions between AECL/Nordion in the future.

I think the big albatross for AECL is that 40 year contract to supply Nordion with the isotopes. It is interesting to contemplate what would have happened had LC not set his head and strong will to see that the old NRU was repaired and restored to full production. It appears that he surely messed up some big corporate, financial and political plans when he was successful in that endeavor.

I'm not saying that I think he did that alone, but his study of the repairs, the scientific instruments, and his recognized participation in the creation of the robots to do the welds indicate that he was perhaps the driving force in the operation.

It appears to me that some planners failed to figure into the equation the attributes and expertise of a certain gentle genius crystallographer...

SB, our old compadre sends along the following link to a 2005 article about Z, Areva, etc.,

In my opinion heavy sanctions do not work. I see them as like a steroid boost to the blackmarket industry. One way or another I sense that kind of operation underlies the tragic massacre in France.

I always wanted to know more about LC's work at Daresbury but never learned much about it. SS sent me this very informative link and I wanted to share.

Daresbury Lab is connected to Surrey Satellite Technology with which S. Al Hilli , (the man killed in France with his family) was connected.

(3) Complementing its in-house capabilities the CCLRC also manages the UK interest in the Instituit Laue Langeven and the European Snychrotron Radiation Facilty at Grenoble. On behalf of the UK Government, the CCLRC is also the main shareholder in Diamond Light Source Limited.

On Feb 10, 2003 LC was in Grenoble in connection with the snychrotron, per his website. (see his topic on Daresbury).

You will note that in 2003 there was a reorganization of CCLRC, and LC was seconded to CRL in 2003. I'm still sorting out his locations and activities for the first 6 months of 2003.

I think you'll find quite a few clues in this material.

Yes, very strange ... tried a few different things, no cigar. My best guess on what we're seeing is that someone named "rwilliams" was downloading content from (iirc) "lach's" a: drive to rwilliams e: drive. Beyond that, it's a poser (for now anyway).

Both LC and RW were into photography, and it does seem to be nature files involved. Could be strange coinkydink, but yeah ..

Big shoutout to you dd2 and SS as well :)

Does this indicate to you folks that the referenced "rwilliams" is alive? Maybe a different rwilliiams ? I didn't think prison inmates had access to the internet.

SS sends this:

10/28/2012
OTTAWA - Nearly 100 of Canada's top researchers and scientists are facing layoffs in what the NDP science and technology critic says is just the "tip of the iceberg" in what appears to be the Conservative government's plan to slash funding for basic research and focus instead on research that's industry-driven.
SNIP>
On Thursday, 94 National Research Council employees across the country received notification letters that their services "may no longer be required," according to a statement released that day by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada.

Those employees include scientists, researchers and business development officers who work in the life sciences, engineering, and business management divisions. They are located in Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, London, Regina, Winnipeg and Ottawa, the union's statement said.
SNIP>
"This is another example of the government's wrong-headed approach to the NRC," the union's president Gary Corbett said in the statement.

"Future NRC activities will be dictated by market demands and by what can be commercialized, instead of being focused on the benefits Canadians receive from public research, and the economic spinoffs which can be leveraged from cutting-edge studies."
SNIP>

http://www.canada.com/Newest+National+Research+Council+layoffs+iceberg+science+critic/7461060/story.html

I was immediately reminded of Lachlan's Aug/2003 memo declaring that the NRC was not interested in research for mankind but only in selling CANDUs and stuffing nuclear waste down old mine shafts.

Again, money trumps all it seems.

AECL Strike Narrowly Averted

Winnipeg, Manitoba, October 22, 2012 – A strike of Technicians and Technologists at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited Whiteshell Laboratories set to commence today has been narrowly averted. Last minute talks between the union and Company last week successfully resolved the matters in dispute.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada including 800 professional engineers, scientists, technicians and technologists at AECL’s Whiteshell and Chalk River Laboratories.

Thank you, dotr.
I noticed that Chalk River Labs was not among those listed as effected by the 94 potential layoffs.
("Those employees include scientists, researchers and business development officers who work in the life sciences, engineering, and business management divisions. They are located in Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, London, Regina, Winnipeg and Ottawa, the union's statement said.")

Maybe this union activity there prevented layoffs at CRL.

'Cloak of invisibility' gets even closer to reality

Research at Duke University ties up some loose ends from previous attempts

CBC News

Posted: Nov 12, 2012"

"Scientists are getting much closer to achieving a perfect "cloak of invisibility," this time using a diamond-shaped device to help clean up some of the loose ends from previous attempts.
Now you see him. Nathan Landy, a graduate student in the laboratory of senior investigator Prof. David R. Smith, at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, says the new findings could be important in transforming how light or other waves can be controlled or transmitted. (Duke University)
Building on research done in 2006, electrical engineers at Duke University in Durham, N.C., have improved how the edges of their "cloak" work, allowing light to pass around an object without reflections so that the human eye can't see it. Light waves are bent around the object, making it appear not to be there"

This is the bit I like.. (bbm)

"It's like the card people in Alice in Wonderland. If they turn on their sides, you can't see them, but they're obviously visible if you look from the other direction."
