Quebec to shut down its only reactor.

The government of outgoing Premier Jean Charest decided in 2008 to rebuild the Gentilly-2 nuclear plant at a cost of about $2 billion, but stopped work after the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011.

The PQ has committed since 2009 to close the generating station, which is located in Bécancour, Que., across the St. Lawrence River from Trois-Rivières.

A decision had to be made by the end of this year, when Gentilly-2's operating licence runs out.

Nordion shares sink after dividend suspended on arbitration loss

In a brief, separate statement, AECL said it would review the panel’s decision.
The NRU reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, supplies raw material that Nordion uses to produce molybdenum-99. Nordion is one of the world’s leading producers of moly-99, used in medical imaging.

At issue in Nordion’s dispute with AECL are the MAPLE reactors, which AECL built to replace the NRU. The reactors never worked properly, and AECL shut down the project in 2008. Nordion has argued that AECL is legally required to complete the reactors.

Nordion’s stock plunged 43.5 percent to C$5.91 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. B efore the ruling, the stock had risen 17.3 percent over three months, partly on hopes that the company would win in arbitration.

Thank you, dotr. I think it will be interesting to watch the interactions between AECL/Nordion in the future.

I think the big albatross for AECL is that 40 year contract to supply Nordion with the isotopes. It is interesting to contemplate what would have happened had LC not set his head and strong will to see that the old NRU was repaired and restored to full production. It appears that he surely messed up some big corporate, financial and political plans when he was successful in that endeavor.

I'm not saying that I think he did that alone, but his study of the repairs, the scientific instruments, and his recognized participation in the creation of the robots to do the welds indicate that he was perhaps the driving force in the operation.

It appears to me that some planners failed to figure into the equation the attributes and expertise of a certain gentle genius crystallographer...

In my opinion heavy sanctions do not work. I see them as like a steroid boost to the blackmarket industry. One way or another I sense that kind of operation underlies the tragic massacre in France.

I always wanted to know more about LC's work at Daresbury but never learned much about it. SS sent me this very informative link and I wanted to share.

Yes, very strange ... tried a few different things, no cigar. My best guess on what we're seeing is that someone named "rwilliams" was downloading content from (iirc) "lach's" a: drive to rwilliams e: drive. Beyond that, it's a poser (for now anyway).

Both LC and RW were into photography, and it does seem to be nature files involved. Could be strange coinkydink, but yeah ..

I noticed that Chalk River Labs was not among those listed as effected by the 94 potential layoffs.

Maybe this union activity there prevented layoffs at CRL.
