So, the killer was most likely not known to Laura. LE had had no run ins with him and he was not in school. He's simply described as being a "skinny kid".

Could the father's connection with the Hells Angels have anything to do with the death or the killer? Was Laura wearing any of her father's friend's patches or logos when she was killed? Had she possibly borrowed a jacket?

well, there are plenty of hells angels in prison and on the street so i bet his days are numbered in either place... although i dont think that is the proper way to deal with this but 10yrs. for murder is an insult to the family of the young girl...mo

It's extremely unlikely. A parent who cared at all wouldn't allow their kids, particularly girls, to wear anything affiliated with HA out in public. Too inflammatory. Plus, police and the family say the suspect doesn't know Laura, and I'm sure the family would have said so if they recognized him - this was random IMO.

Hell's Angels are...well, no angels, but they don't send their teenage children to go around other killing children with baseball bats in parks.

Because the suspect was 17 at the time of Szendrei's death, he cannot be identified, but police have said he was not previously known to them.

Police have released few details about the incident, except to say the suspect did not know Szendrei and it appears the attack was a crime of opportunity. The trial is expected to run until early October

Surprise guilty plea in Laura Szendrei murder case

The young man accused of killing 15-year-old Laura Szendrei in a Delta, B.C., park two years ago has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

The surprise guilty plea was entered in Surrey on Thursday, Crown spokeswoman Samantha Hulme confirmed.

Laura was attacked inside a wooded area of Mackie Park on Sept. 25, 2010. The park was busy at the time, with a number of sporting events under way. Laura was on her way to meet friends when she was badly beaten. Friends heard her scream, but by the time they arrived the attacker was gone. She died in hospital.

The accused was initially charged with first-degree murder. Chief Cessford said he endorses the second-degree murder plea since Crown will be seeking an adult sentence.

Aren't the authorities concerned that this is the same guy who beat those other women over the head? It sounds like he has "issues" that aren't going to go away. They should lock him up and throw away the key.

Hopefully that's what will happen when he is sentenced in February as an adult. I think it would be an automatic life sentence, much more than he would have got as a young offender...

Yes, he was a young offender but only a few days I think away from being 18 so he will almost certainly be sentenced as an adult. (Kruse Wellwood was only 16 when he killed Kimberley Proctor and he was sentenced as an adult). http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105682&highlight=wellwood

It was actually a metal pipe he used, it was later found in his dad's shop or shed. But yeah, horrible attack and murder for no apparent reason.

What's really disturbing is this (snipped and BBM):

During his sentencing hearing, the court heard DeBruin left home on the morning of the murder, carrying plastic cable ties and a metal pipe. His plan was to find someone to rape, though he had no particular victim in mind. Szendrei just happened to be the first person he ran into who was by herself.

The court heard DeBruin asked Szendrei to help him fix his bike. He then tried to wrap a plastic wrap around her neck, but Szendrei screamed and attempted to run away, so he hit her over the head several times with the pipe.

Psychiatrists who testified at DeBruin's hearing said the attack was motivated by the DeBruin's desire to have sex with someone, apparently in order to get over his anxiety around women. The court heard DeBruin had sexually assaulted three other women in Delta in a series of escalating attacks before Szendrei's murder.

The motive is especially appalling.
