GUILTY Canada - Man, 26, beaten, tortured, starved, Regina, Sask, 16 April 2010

Can't stand looking at his smirk. So glad LE has finally found time to get arrest warrants. About time.

I sure hope this delay wasn't caused by LE trying to decide if this was a "domestic" assault or not. Because either way, assault is asault and the speculation regarding the exact nature of their relationship is irelevant.

I'm so happy an arrest has been made. But the public was only told about an OFFICIAL suspect in the last 48 hours. An arrest came quickly after that. I just hope Paxton did not hurt any other people during the 4 months he was able to live his life and carry on while his victim is still recuperating. What was the hold up for calling Paxton a suspect in this case??????

Was an arrest made? I thought arrest warrants were just finally issued.

CTV Edmonton reports that Paxton is currently in custody and is being questioned by Calgary detectives.

Mason said Calgary police suspect that more victims may come forward as the case moves forward.

LaFortune was also disfigured, had been burned and police say parts of his lips and tongue had been cut off.

He was in such rough shape that police could not even interview LaFortune about what happened to him for nearly a month.

Still 4 months seems a long time to take action against this guy. He sounds violent and dangerous to me. They even suspect other victims may be out there.

Does that even matter? With all due respect that is like saying what adult female allows herself to be abused or raped.

So agree, annalia. It doesn't matter if the abuser is your roommate, significant other, friend, what have you. Assault and abuse isn't any better coming from someone you know as opposed to a stranger.

I don't know what the relationship was between the two men, but on Dustin's website (set up by his family) his brother states that he liked girls. He had a girlfriend before he moved in with this guy.

The suspect is accused of illegal confinement also, meaning not allowing his victim to leave. So it doesn't sound like a circumstance where Dustin was consenting to his mistreatment.

Thank goodness that ????? isn't still on the streets, seeking out his next victim. You know someone who exhibits this kind of sadism is not going to just stop. Thankfully the public is now safe from this guy.

The cruelty he showed, just makes me shudder. The guy puts me in mind of Dahmer.

Men can become domestic abuse surviors just like women can.

All I was suggesting was that the only way I see a man allowing another man to control and abuse him is if they were romantically involved. Same goes for woman to woman or woman to man. I have NEVER heard of a case were two friends/roommates had abuse like that in their relationship/friendship. JMHO…

I'm not surprised there may be other victims. This doesn't seem like his first time torturing someone...

ITA - you don't just wake up one moring and decide to rape and torture someone hardcore for the next two years. This was probably an escalating pattern of increasing violence over time. The longer he got away with it, the more sadistic and bold he became in indulging his sick thoughts.

No, that is not at all what I was suggesting. All I was suggesting was that the only way I see a man allowing another man to control and abuse him is if they were romantically involved. Same goes for woman to woman or woman to man. I have NEVER heard of a case were two friends/roommates had abuse like that in their relationship/friendship. They said this went on for two years, it wasn't just a random act of being raped. JMHO…

It sounds like it started like a minor thing and it grew to what it became.

It seems like police were waiting for Dustin to speak and tell them what happened BEFORE they pressed charges but what if he had died from his injuries... Then would it have taken the police so long to make an arrest?

  • #153
OMG! It's about time! I can't believe it took this long.

No kidding!!

(Edited after I read he was arrested...I need to read the whole thread before posting!)

I'm so glad this man has been caught. I'm sure it gives Dustin a small sense of peace knowing that he can't ever get to him again.

Torture case suspect appears agitated in court
Fri Aug 27, 2:53 PM
CALGARY - The suspect in a gruesome torture case that at least one investigator has labelled the worst he has ever seen appeared agitated and angry at his first court hearing Friday.

Dustin Paxton appeared in court via video link wearing a blue prison jumpsuit after being arrested in Edmonton earlier this week living under a different name.
Paxton initially appeared calm at the hearing, but as the judge began to read the charges against him, he began to run his fingers through his hair over and over. He rocked back and forth with his arms folded and occasionally laughed.

He shook his head "no" when charges related to assaults against LaFortune were detailed.

Paxton grew angry when the judge asked him if he understood the proceedings.

"I don't understand a word you guys are saying. Maybe I should have a lawyer," he said.

"I've been in transport for four days and I was told I'd be seeing a lawyer.

"I want a lawyer. I want to talk to a lawyer," he continued.

When asked if he wanted to speak for a moment to a legal aid lawyer on hand for people without representation, he snapped.

"Not for a moment. You can adjourn it for a week."

When the judge explained he had the choice of a court appointed lawyer or paying for one himself Paxton, he calmed.

"Yes ma'am. I would like to apply for legal aid."

Paxton's next court appearance was set for Sept. 3.

LaFortune discusses his ordeal

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2010/08/27/sk-cgy-mb-lafortune-interview.html

He told CBC News reporter Dani Mario that the man accused of assaulting him, Dustin Paxton, was very manipulative.

"He was such a scary guy," he said. "And so manipulative."

He claims he was victimized for over a year, but was afraid to speak out.

"I was really scared of him," LaFortune said. "I think I thought it would just get worse, all of the time.

"He made sure to hit me every single day. I just hated when he used stuff like the whip or the cane or something like that."

It sounds like he had been abused long-term, just getting progressively worse and worse. They say that he will have reconstructive surgery on his lips and ears.

This poor guy. The horrifying memories he must have. I'm so glad he is recovering well. I had my doubts when I saw the first pictures of him. Bless him. He truly has been to hell. I hope his life is filled with peace and happiness from now on. I hope the perp is never again set free to do such horrible things to another person. He has an evil heart.

Meanness - out and out meanness - I just can't understand this. I can understand flying off in a rage and hitting someone, but I can't understand calculated, intentional, planned meanness to another person.

Not getting it,

Salem

I wonder who it was that made the call? I'm surprised that they did not follow-up after nobody responded. Perhaps it was LaFortune who made the call?

CBC News

Months before assault victim Dustin LaFortune showed up at a Regina hospital disfigured and emaciated, someone in Calgary had called 911 about the case, police have confirmed.
Officials are not revealing who placed the call or any other details about it.
But according to local media reports, the Feb. 28 call alleged an assault had taken place and no officers were dispatched to investigate.
