Search continues for Kitchener teens missing in Algonquin Park
rbbm.
“It’s rugged terrain to get through, so it takes time. And that’s part of the reason we’re saying no at this point in time we’re not calling on members of the public to come and help out because it is such rugged terrain and the searchers that we do have in there, the trained searchers, they’re all tracked by GPS,” Dickson explained. “So, once an area has been cleared by our searchers, we can mark that off on a map.”

He said if members of the public get involved, it could get disorganized and cause unnecessary confusion.

“Whereas if we have people just wandering in the woods looking, we might be doing double duty and the same area is being searched two or three times,” Dickson said."

“We’ve had sightings from within the park,” Dickson said. “One sighting that was reported along Highway 60. And I mean there is a chance the girls have made it out of the park by this point in time, but we haven’t heard from them and no one’s heard from them.”
“Please call 1-888-310-1122 if you did see these young girls walking in or near Algonquin Park. Every tip that comes in could prove to be the one that helps us find them.”

So in that same breath, is it possible that they believe that they have missed their ride home?
I know I have been a tour guide for many trips and I always tell people to make sure they are back on time, otherwise we will leave without them? And yes, I have left people in other countries(looong story). I have done the tour guide thing to Algonquin and again we don't really wait for people. You are told to be there at a certain time, we look at the list, let the office know who is missing, then the office gives us the ok to leave.
So they thought they missed their ride and possibly encountered/were picked up by "bad" people?

Such wonderful news. I hope that they get together with their group, debrief about their experience, and everyone learns many good things about woodland survival.

Smart girls!

The girls had made it about a quarter of the way toward their destination when they realized they had left the trail and were lost. They drew on their education about being in the forest and decided to stay where they were instead of continuing on, possibly farther from any trails and potential rescue.

According to police, the two Kitchener teens rationed their food and water.

Fantastic rescue! Thanks for the great pictures of them @LadyL! Congrats to the OPP Canine Team for finding them! I'm so glad they stayed where they were, once they realized they were lost!

How Zoe the police dog sniffed out 2 missing girls in Ontario's Algonquin Park

“About 90 minutes after starting to search for two 16-year-old girls who had been missing in Ontario's Algonquin Park since Thursday, Zoe began showing the telltale signs that she had picked up a scent.

"That's what you want to look for when the dogs acquire a track. There's a physical cue, or a difference in their behaviour," said Scott Gannon, an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police Canine Unit......

......"She became excited and we watched her and then she proceeded to go down the trail," Gannon said.

With Zoe out ahead, Gannon and the crew began calling the names of the girls, who responded by blowing a whistle three times.

The police called for the girls to say their names.

"They gave us the correct names, because we wanted to make sure [it wasn't] someone else on the trail just hearing us yell," Gannon said.

"We told them to stay put and we followed the dog."....”
