I have a speculated theory:

New online boyfriend (i.e. groomer) may have said, "come to Regina for a couple days." (Either pretended he lived in Regina, or lived there for real.)

Perhaps the back and forth on the phone was about if she would take a bus or he would come and get her. She visited the bus station around 9:45–10:00 a.m. on this Tuesday while skipping school. In this way she would also look more like a runaway on camera which would alibi him a little.

Perhaps she was finding out information to report back to him before committing to him coming to get her. She was told the bus left 5 pm, and she decided that was too long a wait as her parents would find her missing before that since school likely ended 3ish. So they agreed he would come and pick her up. He would point out it would be around a 3-hrs trip which plants the meetup close to her 1:45- 2 pm time last seen on camera.

If he was local, he could pick her up take her to a remote area to do what he wanted, then be back home by supper time like any person who works during the day.

Behaviourally, a local adult posing as someone from Regina is cleaner and lower risk than an actual Regina man making a 5-hour round trip. But it could have also been someone from Regina. A pedo is a pedo.

All in all very puzzling case.
Looking over the surrounding area there are quite a few ravines, lakes and bodies of water.

Hopefully LE got into MB’s accounts to track who she was communicating with.

Was there ever a deep dive into local contacts? Any inappropriate gifts from adults? Bullying by classmates?

From what I read, they got the connections through her Telus phone account, but it could not tell them what any text messages said. Her friends from school said she had 2 phones. LE believed IIRC, she may have been texting/messaging via an app. They say getting access to the app messages is extremely difficult as they are USA.

Yes, Manitoba is a large open area. I think locals may have done a search of their own properties (may have read that somewhere).

SPECULATION statement: Though I've researched this, nothing here implies this is what happened to Mekayla Bali. Many believe she was trafficked, and I'm presenting a pivot to ask what if she was murdered the day she went missing?

Weather Context – April 12, 2016 (Yorkton, SK)

WeatherSpark’s historical data (2016 Past Weather at Yorkton Municipal Airport, Saskatchewan, Canada - Weather Spark) for Yorkton Municipal Airport, suggests the weather mid-April 2016 was still experiencing freeze–thaw conditions.

• Daytime highs (roughly +1°C to +5°C).
• Overnight well below freezing (approximately –5°C to –10°C).
• Snow cover was still present in the region during early April.
• The area had not yet transitioned into spring temperatures.

(bbm) Given those conditions, the ground would likely still have been frozen below the surface. This means that on April 12, 2016, the ground in and around Yorkton was unlikely to have been fully thawed or easily diggable. Construction equipment use would be possible, but hand digging through snow / ice by a panicked perp, unlikely.

Water sources may have also still been ice-covered, so water concealment more unlikely.

Concealment Options
based on general criminology research on body disposal patterns.
More plausible places for putting a person under the above weather conditions could include:

• existing depressions or treelines
• drainage ditches or culvert (pipe)
• pond edges where ice was thinning
• abandoned structures or debris sites

• private property with disturbed areas, or:
  • Equipment sheds
  • Grain bins
  • Machinery
  • Fuel tanks
  • Scrap piles
  • Storage containers
  • Old vehicles

**Unfortunately, since it has been 10 yrs now (2026 at writing), in long-term missing person cases, especially in rural prairie regions, remains do not always stay intact or centralized over time. That said, rural terrain can still be searched. Modern search methods (canine units, targeted re-examination, new technology, property changes, etc.) have led to recoveries many years later. The passage of time makes recovery more complex, but it does not make it impossible.

Assuming friends and acquaintances of Mekayla's mother and the rest of her family have been questioned by LE......
speculation, imo.

I would really hope so.

Also ten years has gone by for Animals to spread out her bones, as well as the harsh winters Manitoba is known to go through. Outside of city centres... Manitoba is heavy forest.

Indeed, lots of challenges, but never impossible. (I lived in Winnipeg for a time so know what you mean.)

Is it believed that MB ended up in Manitoba?
Last known whereabouts was Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

hahaha you got us, yes, SK. Oh, dear, our mistake, we often think the same weather conditions of both provinces. You are right.

Were there ever angles explored that MB was being cyberstalked or exploited?

At that time a US male was targetting youth.
Link

All speculation

Someone like that predator may have tartgeted MB and travelled to Yorkton to meet up with her.

There was the Yorkton Spring Expo (April 12-14, 2016) at the Gallagher Centre (455 Broadway St W Yorkton, SK, S3N 2X1). The expo featured over 150 displays from local and home-based agricultural businesses. Hopefully LE looked into that event’s attendees to check if anyone showed up on camera with or near MB on April 12.

Also, the woman MB allegedly asked to book a hotel room for her is very weird. It sounds more like a person feeding info to LE to throw off an investigation. Hopefully they looked into where that woman went after leaving the restaurant.

Eh it's possible but I think preds hunt within their countries borders, it's a pain to go through customs.

Was everything okay at home? Asking for a hotel room could be her trying to get away from home if even for a night. But it is really weird.

Wish we knew more. The mother has said no problems at home but did bring up bullying at school. Quotes from articles are included below.

'Did I give her all the tools?': Paula Bali reflects on three years since daughter's disappearance

By Austin M. Davis • Regina Leader-Post

She [Paula Bali] gets frustrated at suggestions Mekayla was unhappy and planned to leave voluntarily. Some of Mekayla’s social media posts may indicate those thoughts, but Paula contends they were outdated and irrelevant. On the day her daughter was last seen, Paula says, Mekayla had access to money but didn’t take it.

“When she left that morning, she was fine. There was nothing different,” Paula says, adding there’s no explanation “other than someone took her.”

“She wasn't engaged in dangerous, risky behaviours. No mental health issues, no substance abuse issues. No temper tantrums or threats of running away. No sneaking out. When invited to sleepovers, she would usually call by 11 p.m. to be picked up, she was a homebody,” explained Paula Bali, Mekayla’s mother.

Good collection. I head read this. They think she was messaging others via an app. When messenger came out it was mostly school friend connecting with each other but today there are so many other dangerous apps and through games. One friend said she had 2 phones.

Do you think a) she is a runaway? b) someone took her to traffic? c) someone took her to assault her and killed her either by accident or intentionally? all speculation of course.

Vast area to search would be never ending. Praying if she is a skeleton someone finds it.

In 2010, were LE able to get geo location of cell phones? Were they able to find out where MB's phone was switched off around 6 am on April 13?

I've wondered about the 2 phones. Whether she bought the other one or if it was given to her.
Some reasons that AI gave:
Privacy & Secret Social Lives: For an introvert, a second phone can provide a sanctuary to interact with friends or explore identities away from parental monitoring.
Bypassing Restrictions: It is a common strategy to circumvent parental controls, app blockers, or screen time limits set on their main device.
Punishment Backup: Many teens keep a "burner" or second phone as a backup to stay connected if their primary phone is confiscated as a punishment.
Separation of Use: They may use one phone for "official" or family-monitored activities and the second for personal interests, games, or social media to limit distractions on their main line.
Identity Exploration: The second device allows them to experiment with different personas, slang, or hobbies without fear of judgment from family.
Physical Protection: They might use an older second phone for activities where a newer device could be damaged, such as hiking or travel.

Do you think a) she is a runaway? b) someone took her to traffic? c) someone took her to assault her and killed her either by accident or intentionally? all speculation of course.

I haven't been able to think of any theories beyond MB being manipulated by someone who had bad intentions.

Yes, hopefully she is found. The not knowing where your child is, is a nightmare for parents and families.

has the claim that she had two devices been verified by another source other than that friend?

That would change many things. I've often thought that her fiddling with the phone was to switch SIM cards, but if she didn't have to do that, then what was she doing?

Obviously this is a movie, but in The Bourne Ultimatium, Bourne buys a prepaid phone and discreetly drops it into the reporter's pocket. When the reporter answers the phone and is talking to Bourne, the CIA can't tap into who he's speaking to since it's a completely different phone that they don't know of.

So, two devices would explain that quite well. If two devices is verifiable.

I don't know where I read about 2 phones but I think a friend had stated it. I have not seen official confirmation from RCMP. Most verified information refers to her primary cellphone.

Snapchat doesn't keep messages logged, even in 2016. Encrypted chat lines like Wickr and Signal existed at those times but I don't know how popular they were

According to this timeline, one of the two classmates she spoke to at 11:59 am said she might have two devices.

According to Wiki there was a Signal app at the time, but only for iOS. I'm not sure if it has ever been said what type of phone Mekayla had, but I assume it was an older Android if she was actually taking it apart to change the SIM or whatever it was she did at the Tim Hortons.
