WARNING: This story contains details that may be disturbing.

The Winnipeg Police Service is asking the public for any information regarding the homicide of a woman who died of severe burns.

Melissa Cook, a 41-year-old woman from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, died in hospital on Aug. 20. She had been living in Winnipeg since April.

Officers with the Winnipeg Police Service became involved in the investigation into Cook’s death on Aug. 25 after the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death a homicide. Her death is the 41st homicide in Winnipeg this year.

Based on the investigation so far, police said that Cook was unhoused when she lived in Winnipeg and may have lived in encampments. She also spent time at Siloam Mission and in South Point Douglas.

Police said she likely got her burns in late June and early July. Officers added that in early July she told a shelter about her injuries and was taken to a hospital where she stayed until her death.

Police said they don’t know exactly where or when she sustained these injuries.

The Winnipeg police’s major crimes unit has been working on finding out information about Cook and her activities over the summer.

Here's another article regarding Melissa. The article says that shelter staff tried to help her by buying items that might help her mangage.

Melissa had addiction issues due to loss of loved ones. She was trying to overcome it, but wasn't able to.
Sometimes some problems are so difficult to overcome one goes back to handling it the only way they know how. But no one should pass away like this as Melissa did.
Was it a drug debt? So what if it was, that doesn't mean that the perp can get away with this because the perp thinks I will make Melissa an example. IDK just a random thought. Melissa went through the shelter system so I wonder how she was able to manage her physical pain, did she use perhaps drugstore items quell it. Its a long time in between to finally going to emergency. So many questions. I wonder why she didn't tell anyone who the perp was. Did she know the perp? Was it a surprise attack and can't identify the perp? But my main question is why din't she tell the people she confided in who it was that did this?

Ugh, this reminds me of the tragic case of Marlene Bird in Saskatchewan. She was a homeless Indigenous woman who was beaten, sexually assaulted and set on fire.
