Canada - Muslim Woman Attacked While Picking Up Kids at School, Toronto, 16 Nov 2015

  • #21
I remember a few incidents after 9/11 but there were vandalism, nothing involving a person. I think that's part of the reason I'm shocked - a mother, at a school with her kids, in broad daylight? So many words I can't say.

Self-defence course empowers Muslim women

******* was the slur a woman yelled at Arij Elmi while she was minding her own business on the streetcar a few days ago. Two men stood up and called the offender out on the slanderous knock, provoked solely by Elmi’s hijab, and the streetcar driver asked the offending woman to depart.

Elmi is working to make this type of intervention the norm.

“To be fair, the onus should not lie on me to have to say something to that person,” she said. “We, as a collective, have to show that this is unacceptable and that we will not tolerate it.”

Ryerson University’s sexual violence education and support co-ordinator Farrah Khan is organizing the workshops through the Outburst! Young Muslim Women’s Project, a movement of women in Toronto who are speaking out against violence. She said that demand for safety and protection tips from the girls she works with has been amplified since the Paris attacks and recent unprovoked anti-Muslim incidents in Toronto.

“We’re seeing the gendered nature of how the attacks are happening,” Khan said. “Muslim women wearing niqabs or hijabs are often the ones being targeted.”

In these trying times, racism is sometimes a two-way street, imo.

http://www.torontosun.com/2015/11/29/teen-in-ttc-spat-with-muslims-tells-his-side

"TORONTO - A TTC ride home nearly two weeks ago left Brandon Van Dinther painted as the poster child for Islamophobia in Toronto, his very life threatened.

Van Dinther and two friends reportedly lashed out at two Muslim women on a Bloor subway car, a brief but ugly encounter that would be broadly characterized — in the wake of the Paris terror attacks that saw 130 killed by Muslim extremists — as a shameful example of Canadian Islamophobia.

The teen met with and apologized to both women last week for his role in the exchange, but insisted in an interview with the Toronto Sun that misunderstanding and anger, not racism, fuelled the encounter.

Things escalated when Van Dinther, who is mixed race with a black mom and a white father, and his friend, who is black, heard the Muslim women accuse them of “behaving like monkeys” and believed the women were making a racial slur against them."

Do any witnesses back up what he said? Everything I've read says the women weren't doing anything and that in addition to the name calling they shoved her and spit on her.

Whatever happened it's good to know they met face to face and worked it out. :)

No matter what was, or was not said, spitting at someone is one of the most disgusting, un hygienic, barbaric thing someone can do, followed by spitting in public places, imo.

Right? I would rather be shoved, frankly. If someone spit on me I would probably immediately vomit.

Flood of support for refugees in the East End

On Dec. 5, Dove will join a DECA Connects benefit called Sleep Out for Syrians – a sub-zero night of sleeping in tents by the Church of the Resurrection, known as ‘The Rez’, on Woodbine Avenue.

Each of the 30 tents will raise at least $250 towards a campaign by The Neighourhood Group to sponsor two Syrian families.

But before Dove and others cocoon in their sleeping bags, they will join a pre-sleep “fireside” party to benefit another sponsorship campaign by The Rez. The party will include a traditional Afghani dinner that happens to be cooked by a former refugee.

Rossalyn Day is part of the Rez group and, like many, new to private refugee sponsorship.

“It was a revelation to me,” she said. “It’s a privilege to be able to do this.”

“How do you help people in a way that maintains their dignity, and their choice?” she asked, adding that language barriers can exacerbate the issue.

“It can be a daunting process, but it’s something you walk through step by step.”

Linette DeGraaf agrees.

“I feel very impatient,” said DeGraaf, who started Upper Beaches Lifeline Syria, a group of 10 core sponsors and 40 supporters who met on a community Facebook page.

“But in two months, we’ve done all this,” she said, noting that the group has so far raised $12,000 towards its $30,000 goal. They are publishing a crowd-sourced cookbook, running a prize draw for donors, and planning to link with an established settlement group by Christmas.

" Peel police are looking to identify a suspect following a hate-related assault on a woman wearing a hijab in Mississauga last month.

The incident occurred in the area of Dundas and Hurontario streets as the 26-year-old victim was leaving work on Nov. 17 at around 7:30 p.m.

According to police, the woman was approached by an unknown man who grabbed her by the shoulders and made ‘derogatory remarks.’

The assault was stopped when a bystander intervened, police said. The victim did not suffer any injuries.

The assault is currently being investigated as a hate crime. Police said in a news release Friday they believe the woman was targeted because she was wearing the religious head covering."

That's so scary! I hope they find him.

A big thank you to that bystander.

#JeSuisHijabi national campaign launches in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – Many believe the aftermath of the Paris attacks has left a wake of Islamophobia in Canada. In order to prevent future violence, women of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community have launched a national campaign entitled #JeSuisHijabi to highlight Canadian values of acceptance and diversity.
...
“If you have any questions, come up to us, come talk to the Muslim women. That’s what we are trying to say. If you want to learn about the Muslim women identity, if you want to learn why they wear a hijab, then what is the better way than come to Muslim women and ask them why they are doing it?” Jamil said.

The national campaign and social media #JeSuisHijabi will continue to run for the next two weeks.

The onlookers helped bring the attacker to justice.
Does it need to be "us" against "them", are we all becoming terrorists?

I shouldn't be shocked people are comfortable enough with their behavior they will actually assault someone in front of other people.

In the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks on Nov. 13, hate crimes against Muslims are on the rise. The Huffington Post has compiled a list of at least 52 incidents of Islamophobia and assaults against Muslims and mosques in North America since then.

This is all part of the cycle of hatred and violence that terrorists hope to promote.

Philadelphia police step up mosque patrols after discovery of pig’s head

Philadelphia police will step up patrols around worship sites as they look for the person who left a severed pig’s head outside a city mosque.

The police department meanwhile hopes to enhance security video that shows someone throwing the animal’s head out the passenger door of a red pickup truck, Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Tuesday. No arrests have been made in the Sunday night incident outside the Al Aqsa Islamic Society in west Philadelphia.

The Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, prohibits Muslims from eating pork, and pigs have been used to taunt or offend Muslims.

Women face abuse in every country. So I understand if some people want to retaliate against isis. But going after Muslim women is not the solution.

Especially since they are mostly targeted when isis takes over a village. It doesn't matter if they are 8 years old nor 58 years old. Isis and similar groups will conquer them as well.

So when it comes to retaliation. People should leave the Muslim females out of it. Jmo.

Due to the culture. They have already been victimized as well. Similar to a stockholme rape victim. Jmo

Police seek woman who pulled on girl's hijab, assaulted her aboard SRT
Police investigating the assault as a hate crime

"The woman pulled on the girl's hijab, kicked her and began yelling profanities, aboard the train, police said. Both got off the LRT and went to a bus platform, where the woman continued to make racist comments about the girl's attire.

The suspect is described as 20-30, five feet five inches tall, with shoulder-length dark hair. She was wearing dark-framed prescription glasses, a blue bomber-style winter jacket, skinny jeans and black shoes. She was also carrying a beige purse."
