These women and girls for the most part are treated way better here in the USA than they are in their own countries by their own family members. JMO.

Just wish they'd wake up and take advantage of true freedom. again JMO

Police seek woman who pulled on girl's hijab, assaulted her aboard SRT
Police investigating the assault as a hate crime

"The woman pulled on the girl's hijab, kicked her and began yelling profanities, aboard the train, police said. Both got off the LRT and went to a bus platform, where the woman continued to make racist comments about the girl's attire.

The suspect is described as 20-30, five feet five inches tall, with shoulder-length dark hair. She was wearing dark-framed prescription glasses, a blue bomber-style winter jacket, skinny jeans and black shoes. She was also carrying a beige purse."

I hope this picture gets shared widely because someone will know who she is. Even though it's blurry there are enough clues - coat, glasses, hair cut, shape face - to be recognizable.

Why does anyone think it's okay to randomly assault a person who looks different?

(Toronto humour: Her coat is light blue instead of black so she'll stand out for sure.)

Has anybody compared this picture with the stabbing suspect case in Canada. I'm not able to find it and at the moment can't remember what city it was in. It's impossible to tell from that photo but the description was about the same.

Lately seems like there has been quite a few weird activities involving women, imo.

What in the world does this have to do with a woman being attacked because of her religion while she was picking up her kids?

How was she failing to take advantage of freedom?

I was wondering that too, and also what "their own countries" means.

Their muslim countries that they come from ..where they have to obey Sharia law etc, be tortured and treated like a dog etc.. Places where they cannot even go outside alone..that's what I mean...We are acting like all these people are attacking muslims is normal and it's not, it's rare (Not acceptable but rare)..these women are far safer in the US and Canada than the middle eastern countries.. Just saying. FREEDOM to me means not having to be a slave to a religion or religious belief that treats women like 2nd class citizens..All JMO if you don't like what I have to say then just keep scrolling. I have an opinion and a right to it!

Sorry I was mistaken. she was born in Canada. But the rest still applies. Most women in the US and Canada who are muslims are far better off here than where their religion originated...the whole muslim religion is a prison for women IMO.

I don't understand how that has anything to do with the incidents we've brought up here. Freedom of religion means we all get to believe and practice in whatever way we want to, and none of us should be subjected to harassment, assault, or discrimination because of it.

JMO but I get upset when people suggest others "go back to their own country" when they have no idea what country that is and are making it based only on superficial information like skin color, first language, accent, religion, dress...

Muslim religion does not, imo. have a monopoly on females and abusive, restrictive practices.

Agreed. And saying that "the whole muslim [sic] religion is a prison for women" is a gross overstatement -- a stereotype. It is true for some Muslim sects -- just as it is true for some Christian and Jewish sects. But to condemn the entire religion like that is short-sighted, if not outright bigotry.

This is a neat idea but thee crowd was small. Maybe they should have tried it at a time when more people would be down there.

"Muslims ‘spread joy’ on Christmas Eve"

A multi-faith, multicultural gathering in Nathan Phillips Square on Thursday was meant to show that, despite hate crimes against Muslims, the best way to respond was with love.

“This is our opportunity to show that love is what we’re going to respond with,” she told the crowd of about 30, huddled in a circle in front of the Christmas tree in front of City Hall. “Hatred is not an option.”

The small gathering included members of the Sikh, Jamaican, Muslim and First Nations communities, among others. Its goal was to rectify misconceptions about Muslims and join different communities in the face of what they say are groups creating divides.
...

When she came to Canada in 2002, she said, many of her friends urged her to stop wearing her hijab, that it would be easier for her to find a job that way. “I said, ‘Why? I am a good Muslim and I didn’t,” Maameri said, adding that she went on to get a job, teaching French to diplomats and politicians.

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2015/12/22/brampton-try-on-a-hijab-event-dispels-myths.html

Muslim women from across the GTA invited Canadians from all walks to “Try on a Hijab” in Brampton on Tuesday to educate the wider community about Islam and the status of women within the faith.

The Star visited the public workshop to learn from participants their take on some common perceptions.

A different perspective, lengthy article.

For us, as mainstream Muslim women, born in Egypt and India, the spectacle at the mosque was a painful reminder of the well-financed effort by conservative Muslims to dominate modern Muslim societies. This modern-day movement spreads an ideology of political Islam, called “Islamism,” enlisting well-intentioned interfaith do-gooders and the media into promoting the idea that “hijab” is a virtual “sixth pillar” of Islam, after the traditional “five pillars” of the shahada (or proclamation of faith), prayer, fasting, charity and pilgrimage.

We reject this interpretation that the “hijab” is merely a symbol of modesty and dignity adopted by faithful female followers of Islam. This modern-day movement, codified by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Taliban Afghanistan and the Islamic State, has erroneously made the Arabic word hijab synonymous with “headscarf.” This conflation of hijab with the secular word headscarf is misleading. “Hijab” literally means “curtain” in Arabic. It also means “hiding,” “obstructing” and “isolating” someone or something. It is never used in the Koran to mean headscarf.

In colloquial Arabic, the word for “headscarf” is tarha. In classical Arabic, “head” is al-ra’as and cover is gheta’a. No matter what formula you use, “hijab” never means headscarf. The media must stop spreading this misleading interpretation.

Did you read the remarks below the video? First of all, the professor teaches at the University of Central Florida. He's also known primarily for being a rabid Muslim-hater. Here are some of the comments from the video you linked:

"TAMPA, FL, 6/17/13) - The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL), along with other community organizations, announced today that it has called on the University of Central Florida (UCF) to review the accuracy and objectivity of information offered to students in courses taught by Dr. Jonathan Matusitz."

"CAIR-FL says Matusitz, an associate professor in the UCF Nicholson School of Communication, is "membership director" for the anti-Muslim hate group ACT! for America and bizarrely claims Germany will "become an Islamic republic by 2050." "

"ACT! for America leader Hanah Kahwagi Tudor, who goes by the pseudonym "Brigitte Gabriel," says an American Muslim "cannot be a loyal citizen" and that Islam is the "real enemy." She once told the Australian Jewish News: "Every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim." Tudor also claimed that "Islamo-fascism is a politically-correct word...it's the vehicle for Islam. . .Islam is the problem." The New York Times describes Gabriel as a "radical Islamophobe" who in the past has made statements like "Arabs have no soul" and "Arabs are barbarians.""

So, I don't find it "interesting". I find it very disturbing to see this material linked here and treated as a legitimate source of information. Doing so is nothing less than promoting hate and ignorance.

Likewise, I don't think that anyone should rely on a xenophobic text from 1831 to inform them on modern Islam.

Bottom line .... it is not us who hates Islam .... it is Islam who hates us . They hate the western free world with its Jewish and Christian democracies .

How do you reconcile the first statement with the fact that this thread is about a woman who was attacked strictly for being Muslim?

Oh, and regarding your second statement, Canada isn't a Christian or Jewish democracy. It's a democracy, period, in which there is religious freedom and a separation of Church/Temple/Mosque/God and State. Same with the USA. And if this woman hated Canada, she would not have chosen to live here.

This nasty aggression, surprisingly happened in Vancouver, imo.

http://www.citynews.ca/2016/01/09/syrian-refugees-pepper-sprayed-at-welcome-night-in-vancouver/

VANCOUVER – Police said they were looking for a suspect after more than a dozen Syrian refugees were pepper sprayed late Friday night in Vancouver.

The attack happened outside the Muslim Association of Canada Centre during a “welcome night” event for newly-arrived Syrian refugees.

City police said a crowd of men, women and children had gathered outside the MAC centre when a man wearing a white-hoodie apparently rode by on a bicycle and sprayed 15 to 30 people.
