Pointe-Sapin, New Brunswick

News release

The New Brunswick RCMP has assumed the lead role in the search for a 15-year-old boy who was reported to have fallen off a fishing vessel off the coast of Pointe-Sapin, N.B.

On August 29, 2022, the Richibucto RCMP provided assistance to the Halifax Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (JRCC) as they responded to a distress call. At approximately 9:45 a.m., the JRCC received a report that Justin Landry, 15 years old, had fallen off a fishing vessel several kilometers off the Pointe-Sapin wharf.

Several people and agencies assisted with initial search efforts, including more than 20 local boats, the Canadian Coast Guard, a Transports Canada aircraft, and a search and rescue helicopter.

At approximately 8 p.m., the JRCC ended their search for the missing boy, and the New Brunswick RCMP assumed a lead role in the investigation to locate him. Specialized policing services are assisting, including the RCMP Helicopter and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.

Justin Landry is considered a missing person and police continue to be in contact with his family. He was last seen wearing a blue sweater, green rubber pants, and green rubber boots.

Anyone with information that could help locate Justin Landry is asked to contact the Richibucto RCMP detachment at 506-523-4611.

Cpl. Eric Friel of the RCMP Richibucto detachment said Tuesday divers began working at around noon and were still in the water at 5 p.m. He said there's no set time for ending the search. "They're going to go as long as they can," Friel said. "He's considered missing at this point until we confirm otherwise." [snip] Mazerolle said more than 20 boats helped search for teen on Monday. He said if Landry isn't found Tuesday, the fishermen will help with the search Wednesday as well. "We all [want] to have our kid back home."

I have hope for this one. He's young and, I'm assuming, (since he was on a fishing boat) familiar with deep water.

Current sea temp is 17°C, so it's a bit fresh, but nowhere near cold by Canadian standards. I've swam and bodyboarded in 17°C.

Obviously it wasn't law or mandatory to wear a life-jacket while on board.

What concerns me is how long was it before the crew realised he went over-board? If it was immediately, he would've been seen in the water and then they could've while turned the boat around to fetch him?

Was he a swimmer? I don't suppose all people on fishing boats are....

RCMP divers continue search for teen who fell from boat

"For the third day in a row, RCMP divers are searching for a 15-year-old boy who fell from a fishing boat off the eastern New Brunswick coast.

Justin Landry fell into the water at around 9:30 a.m. Monday, a few kilometres out from the Pointe-Sapin wharf.

A 12-hour search and rescue mission took place, with two planes, six boats and 20 fishers.

The rescue mission by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre Halifax was deemed unsuccessful by 8 p.m., and the investigation was turned over to the RCMP.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday night in the parking lot of Landry's school, Mgr Marcel-François-Richard, in Saint-Louis-de-Kent. The school invited people to bring flowers, pictures and cards to the vigil."
