A 28-year-old Ontario Provincial Police officer has been shot and killed while on duty in Ohsweken Tuesday afternoon and two suspects have been taken into custody.

Const. Ed Sanchuk told reporters Tuesday evening a Haldimand County OPP officer was in the area of Indian Line and Concession 14 Walpole when they came across a vehicle in a ditch. The scene of the shooting is just west of Ojibway Road, which is about five minutes west of Hagersville.

He said the officer, who only served with the OPP for a little more than a year, was shot during that interaction. The circumstances leading up to the shooting weren’t immediately clear.

Sanchuk the officer was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.''

''First responders will escort the body of Grzegorz “Greg” Pierzchala on Friday, as the province and the Ontario Provincial Police service mourn the officer who was fatally shot this week.

Pierzchala, 28, was killed on Tuesday while responding to a report of a vehicle in a ditch. He had passed his probation just hours earlier, marking a milestone for the young man who decided at age five that he wanted to be a police officer.

The procession will leave the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto at 9 a.m. and make its way north on Highway 400 to Barrie, according to a Thursday OPP news release. A police funeral will be held in Barrie on Wednesday, Jan. 4. More details are expected after they’ve been finalized.''

''Just hours after Pierzchala was murdered, the scene unfolded at West Haldimand General Hospital where McKenzie was welcomed by supporters as he was wheeled in.

“Randall, we’re here baby, we’re right here. We’re right here kid, we’re right here son,” one says in a video posted by Yakowennahskats Media.
McKenzie, apparently not quite grasping the gravity of the situation, yells at photographers: “F— you goof.”
His baby mama and former girlfriend screams: “STOP TAKING PICTURES.”
On her Facebook page, the ex-gal pal now apparently in a relationship with another man, offers a defence of McKenzie. It is … outlandish.''

''A Canadian flag was raised and several members of the public watched a police motorcade as it reached the arena at the end of a procession before the private funeral began at 11 a.m.

Officers were asked to remove their peaked caps as Pierzchala's casket was carried to the front of the arena at the start of the ceremony.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is in attendance.

Pierzchala — who had passed his probation to become a police constable just hours before his death — is the fifth Canadian officer to be killed in the line of duty since September, the fourth in Ontario alone.

Members of the public are meanwhile invited to sign an online book of condolences.''

Court sketch of Randall McKenzie and Brandi Stewart-Sperry.
"The two people involved in the 2022 killing of an Ontario Provincial Police officer are appealing their first-degree murder convictions.

The verdicts were handed down for Randall McKenzie and Brandi Stewart-Sperry on April 24, after the jury deliberated for six-and-a-half hours. Both were sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

Constable Greg Pierzchala was shot six times on Dec. 27, 2022 while responding to a routine call about a vehicle in a ditch on Indian Line, near Hagersville, Ont.''

''The 28-year-old cited “jury bias” as the reason for appealing his conviction.
Early in the trial, jurors sent the judge a note saying they “felt uncomfortable” because when they left the Cayuga, Ont. courthouse during their lunch break or at the end of the day, there were people crowding around their vehicles. Jurors stated that the four to six people, seen in the court gallery, “appear to be known” to McKenzie.''
