GUILTY Canada- Parents charged in brutal assault & S.A. of their 6-week-old baby girl (in critical condition) Lethbridge, Alta. Jan.'23 * WARNING DISTURBING*

In the mother's agreed statement of facts, she says only the father, roommate and herself had access to the child.

The Crown read the statement on her behalf, saying that the roommate called police after seeing the father covering the child’s mouth of the child and stopping her from being able to make sounds in another room of the house.
Lethbridge mother enters guilty plea in six-week-old infant assault case

If not for this roommate's report we may never have known this baby lived and died. Odds are she would have been reported missing months or years after her death and disposal of her little body by these [unusual persons].

Bless this baby girl, I don't even know what to say. We see so much horror day in and day out perpetrated on littles. But the SA of an infant is about as horrific as it gets. I wish these [unusual persons] every horror karma has to present them.

wonder about the dynamic/relationship between the 31 year old and the 52 year old. Was he controlling, or maybe in some sort of "supervisory" capacity.

Had to find out if cerebral palsy can develop after birth and turns out it can, in very early infancy and very infrequently - but could have been caused by the abuse - cutting off air supply to brain, etc.

Thank you for saying this, I had wondered too, and looked it up after your post. I had no idea it could be caused after birth by abuse. I am so sad to learn this. This poor poor baby girl!

I wonder if there is some evidence that shows why this baby girl was abused from birth. I too wonder like someone else posted if they planned her birth specifically for this purpose. It makes me crazy to even think such a thing, but these two are so evil... Where are their relatives? Did anyone notice this baby was abused besides the roommate? Did the baby have any regular check-ups after birth?

As to the question that the baby was bred for that purpose, WHY would he need such an infant? He had the much younger woman, so why was this not enough?
It's bad enough to hear about teenagers and young children being raped and abused, but a newborn?? WHY??? He must be one sick man. There is not a sentence or a punishment allowed by law, that is bad enough for them both.

Ah - found an article!

A Lethbridge father has pleaded guilty in a horrific case of abuse that left a six-week-old girl hospitalized with traumatic injuries.

The 53-year-old father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life during a Friday court appearance.

In addition, the Crown has withdrawn charges of sexual assault and sexual interference laid against the father, stating there was no evidence of injuries consistent with a sexual assault.
[.....]
After the agreed statement of facts was shared, Judge Kristin Ailsby gave the father a chance to speak on the matter.

He told court "I hope my daughter develops as normal as possible and has a safe, happy and healthy life."

The defence says the father is remorseful for his actions and has wanted to resolve the matter since April.

The father is set to be sentenced on Aug. 4.

The 31-year-old mother, who pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life, is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 18

Good. That was too much to bear.

''A father who repeatedly assaulted his young baby, could be sent to prison for seven years if a judge accepts the recommendation of his lawyer and the Crown prosecutor.

The father, who can’t be named to protect the identity of the baby girl, pleaded guilty Friday in Lethbridge court of justice to charges of aggravated assault and failure to provide the necessaries of life.

If not for the guilty plea, which is considered a sign of remorse, the father could have faced, after a trial, 10-12 years in a federal penitentiary, Crown Prosecutor Suzanne Kendall told the judge.

“By taking into account the early guilty plea and (the father’s) expression of remorse and his background, that was how we came to a sentence today of seven years incarceration,” Kendall said.''''

''The father told police during an interview he would become frustrated with the baby, and on one occasion while sitting on the edge of the bed while trying to soothe the baby, he dropped the baby on the mattress and said, “I’m f—-king out of here.” At times he would bounce the baby on the couch and say he was playing basketball.''

''Shurtz told court the father was raised in 19 foster homes beginning when he was five years old when he was taken from his home because his parents were not competent caregivers. He said the man was physically abused growing up and suffers from dementia and bipolar disorder and other ailments.

“He indicates he went through electroshock therapy at the Lethbridge hospital 10 or 12 years ago, and has suffered with the effects of that throughout his life.”

Justice Kristen Ailsby has reserved her decision until Aug. 4.''

while I am glad the "father" of this child has pleaded guilty I am confused as to how CSA was alleged in the first place if there was no physical findings to support that charge. I would think if that allegation came from the roommate who reported seeing physical abuse they would have said so when quoting his allegation about tossing the baby onto the bed and bouncing it off the couch like a basketball.

weirdness. I would think had SA also happened to this newborn there would have been obvious physical evidence of such.

I really loathe when anyone tries to play the MH "sympathy/excuse" card. Diagnosed as bipolar, undergoing ECT and growing up in foster care is not a defense

If this "man" were in such a terrible state then he should've been watched more closely. Poor little baby girl hopefully she will be in safer hands now.

*January article: I’m not familiar with Canada’s arrest records or geography. I think @dotr or @Niner might be able to help if anyone can.

We have arrest date of Jan 18, 2023 but a charge date of Jan 20.
See I don’t even know what lethbridge is. Is it like a county agency?
or do we look for Alberta records? I’m lost…

/snip

Lethbridge is the third largest city in Alberta. For records, what you can find will likely not be much. RCMP and Canadian police are usually pretty tight lipped on open cases.

Edit: I'm in Alberta so I can probably access sites.

''**WARNING: The details in the following story may be disturbing to readers**

A Lethbridge father who pleaded guilty in a horrific case of abuse that left a six-week-old girl hospitalized with traumatic injuries has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

In a Lethbridge courtroom on Friday, Judge Kristin Ailsby handed down her sentence, saying the Crown and defence's joint submission was "fit and proper."

The 52-year-old father will serve his sentence at the Bowden Institution.

The father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The Crown had withdrawn charges of sexual assault and sexual interference, stating there was no evidence of injuries consistent with a sexual assault.''
.........................................

''Doctors say the child's prognosis is not known, and they believe she will suffer from cerebral palsy and may not have vision in her left eye.

The baby was discharged from the hospital in April but continues to get medical care.

The defence says the father is remorseful for his actions and has wanted to resolve the matter since April.

The 31-year-old mother, who pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life, is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 18.

Accounting for time already served, the father will spend just over six years behind bars. He'll also have to provide a DNA sample and will have a lifetime ban on firearms.''
