Pearson has worked at U Haul for 19 years and is an executive assistant. He was called to work at the McPhillips location to do inventories

Pearson did inventories on 6 lockers that day including 1103 which had been rented by Giesbrecht. Inventory done because rent wasn't paid

"There was a smell. It was strong. We Got some gloves. It didn't seem right. It was sticky feeling. It seemed wet, and mushy so to speak".

Pearson was with 2 other U Haul employees. They left Giesbrecht's storage locker and called police.

Next witness now up. Kristina Lekei was general manager at U Haul McPhillips location in 2014.

Trial for Andrea Giesbrecht begins today. She is the WPG mother accused of concealing the remains of six infants in a storage locker.@CTVNews

Giesbrecht is in court. The crown calls the first witness, an employee from the storage facility.

U-Haul Employee was doing storage inventory on locker 1103, Oct 20th 2014. The locker was opened because of non-payment.

He found inside a pail full of powder soap. Then he found a rubber maid tote bin, with a bag inside. He said when opened ,it emitted a smell.

The employee says the smell was indescribable.

After opening bag in tote, employees leave locker and call police.

Witness says the discovery inside storage locker led to "Many, many nights of not sleeping." @CTVNationalNews @CTVNews

Second U-Haul employee is now testifying.

Crown is going over payment options, and restrictions for renting a storage locker at U-Haul.

Employee testifies Andrea Kim Naworynski signed storage contract March 7,2014. Remains were found in October. Customer used passport for id.

Employee doesn't know when items were moved inside locker.

No employee accompanies customer to locker. And, in 2014, U-Haul didn't track when customers used storage locker. In 2015, that changed.

In May 2014, customer payments for storage locker were delinquent. U-Haul contacted Andrea Naworynski. Continued chasing payment until Aug.

Employee testifies chase for payment continued into Sept. Employee says when contacted Customer continually said she'd come in and pay.

With lien on contract. U-Haul restricted access to storage unit in May 2014.

When employees opened storage locker. She testifies "it looked strange inside". She says there were no personal items inside, 5 containers.

Two 5 gallon pails. One filled with white foam. second pail had fluid in it. One tote had bags inside bags, a towel and a "rotting smell"

Naworynski, the name on contract, was Andrea Giesbrecht's maiden name. The name Giesbrecht does not appear on storage contract.

Employee testifies Naworynski did not want items touched or sold. She said they were her father's items.

Questions now by defence when was locker used? "When she had zero balance. She could've come everyday, twice a day. I don't know." -witness

"She wanted to keep her unit yes, and the items inside."

Court adjourns until this afternoon.

Thanks for the updates. I am utterly sick at this case. There will be no justice for those babies, that is my grim prediction. There is no way I believe this was a string of stillbirths. But I am also sure the autopsies on the little bodies were not able to determine these were in fact live births. And that is how she will get away with multiple murders.
Sorry to be so grim...

Andrea Giesbrecht trial resumes with next witness. Winnipeg Police Officer - Patrol Sgt Cory Ford.

The Patrol Sgt. was then a Constable on patrol in the area of the U-Haul facility Oct 20, 2014.

Police arrive on scene at 1:09pm. The police arrive knowing garbage bags have been found with "possibly body parts inside".

Police officer says there is a strong smell as he enters. He sees 2 plastic containers, and 3 pails.

Officer testifies smell of decay mixed with a smell like acetone. Different than other death related calls, he says.

The officer is asked to describe to court what he found in each pail or tote. He said he did this carefully, trying not to disturb evidence.

Each tote contains plastic bags with duffel bags and white plastic bags. He notices liquid in each tote and smell of decay.

One pail had a brownish liquid in it. The other had a white crystallized substance in it, like detergent.

Inside bag , illuminated by flashlight, police officer testifies he saw a limb of "what looked like a baby and a human head with hair on it."

Andrea Giesbrecht is listening and watching witness. She shows no emotion during graphic testimony.

Court is now viewing surveillance video from Oct 2014. It appears to show Andrea Giesbrecht inside U-Haul office speaking with employee.

There is no audio in tape.

Video runs about 6 mins. It is entered as an exhibit.

The video was made Oct 3,2014. Police officer testifies the video showed a woman, she appeared to be doing a transaction with an employee.

Giesbrecht trial resumes. Patrol Sargent Cory Ford is the next witness up. He was the first officer on scene.

Ford said prior to arriving on scene officers were told "There was garbage bags within the (storage) locker and possible body parts inside."

Ford "I could immediately smell a very strong smell. I've been to many many death related incidents. I could smell decay".

Ford searched bags by flashing light into plastic "I was able to see a limb of what looked like a baby and a small head with hair on it".

"As I went through the bags I would lift them up and tried to look into the white plastic bags," said Ford.

At that point Ford said officers were directed by their supervisor to search video surveillance cameras.

Court shown surveillance video of October 3, 2014 - the last time Giesbrecht was at U Haul to deal with storage locker.

In court Giesbrecht looked away from the TV screen. It appears she doesn't want to see herself on the monitor. She looks uncomfortable.

In the video Giesbrecht appears to be talking to an employee.

I also have trouble believing all 6 were miscarriages or still births. Has it been established that she is the mother?

Doesn't look that that has been established yet....

Her lawyer, Greg Brodsky, said the trial is likely to be lengthy and will hinge on whether the babies were born alive. Despite numerous pre-trial hearings, it's not clear who the infants were, how old they were or how long their remains were stored.

That's another matter that will probably be impossible to prove, due to the advanced state of deterioration due to decomp and/or chemical effect.

Sadly, our justice system does not allow us to compel the defendant to come up with an innocent explanation for storing dead babies or fetuses in plastic containers. She can just sit there like a statue, thinking to herself "go ahead, find a way to prove they are mine, or that they were born alive". She'll probably go free, and be free to get pregnant again and again....

The article does use the term infants not fetuses. I wonder if the term is being used correctly meaning the bodies were large enough to be considered infants rather than fetuses.

Greg Brodsky now cross-examining identification officer. First question: Did she know Giesbrecht's husband had vasectomy? She didn't.

Medical Records Filed By Prosecutors

The topic of abortions was raised for the first time, by both sides in the afternoon.

Defence lawyer Greg Brodsky asked Aessie if she knew about Giesbrecht receiving “therapeutic abortions.” Aessie said no.

Brodsky also asked her if she knew Giesbrecht’s husband Jeremy had a vasectomy. She said no.

Later, prosecutors filed Giesbrecht’s medical records as an exhibit.

Cwtown attorney Debbie Buors said they detailed treatments from 1988 through 2013. She did not explicitly say whether some or all of those were abortions.

It’s still unclear whether either side will suggest abortions were done for any of the six infants found inside the storage locker.

Medical records detailing Jeremy Giesbrecht’s vasectomy have also been filed. Prosecutors say it happened in 2011.

If the remains were a product of a therapeutic abortion why would the mother have the remains? I have never heard being allowed to take the remains with you when you leave the clinic or hospital.

Exactly. I had to have a d&c after a miscarriage. The hospital had a funeral home cremate the remains and I picked them up.

Am I understanding correctly? It seems the defence is putting the husband's vasectomy out there as some sort of "proof" that she couldn't have become pregnant. Seems like a lame defence to me because a. The vasectomy happened in 2011, so she could have borne these babies/fetuses before then. And b. She could have been impregnated by someone else. Am I missing something here?

Dr. Michael Narvey on stand at Giesbrecht trial. He's a 'neonatologist'. Means he cares for infants born early in neonatal intensive care.
