Looking for opinions here ... in light of recent events, and given that Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday, is it appropriate for educational institutions to have due dates on Remembrance Day?

Many of today's generation have little connection to Remembrance Day, so it has become, in some ways, just another day off. Because of this, it's my belief that institutions overlook the small detail of due dates and assignment deadlines on that day. Is it different this year?

Nov 11 is a regular work day for private sector....but schools usually have day off.......doesn't seem right that due dates should fall on a red letter day like that ....JMHO

So many people wearing red!

... even red shoes!

It's also Friday -- when CF went to Afghanistan Friday became red shirt day.... so it is double double important

I saw that and found it really odd too. Not like the car looked like a cab, and was wondering why that guy walked directly up to the car.

I wonder if those were secret service security guys. It seems like they were pretty fit for a bunch of businessmen just hanging around the parliament buildings with their briefcases. And all men? Plus, it looks like they ran in a fairly determined pattern, perhaps to get into a strategic position.

It was a Minister's vehicle .... I wondered if they were minions waiting for a VIP to show up

If this is in reference to the suit people by the gate when the car drove up, I think they were MPs that were late for their meeting. I think they heard the shooting at the Cenotaph and stopped to try to see what was happening, unaware that the shooter had just driven up beside them. I believe one of the men was Ric McIver. They ran like they were running for their lives. I believe it was Ric McIver that ran across the lawn and ducked behind a car in the nearby parking lot.

"“He said ‘You’re not going to believe this, a shooter has just run into the Parliament buildings, ran within feet of me and with a long gun’,” Christine McIver said, going on to say her husband was safe, but “pretty shaken up”."

Remembrance Day not a federal stat holiday and isn't a holiday on Ontario, QC, NS, or NL. I remember when it was a school holiday, but teachers saw that there was a better opportunity to teach about Remembrance Day in the schools than to just let the kids play at home for the day. Schools in Ontario now have Remembrance Day services.

It certainly would be odd to have random, unrelated assignments due on Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday, and I agree that it is odd to have education institution related deadlines and due dates on that day.

"In Canada, Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday - with a notable exception of NS, NWT, ON and QC - as it is in many other countries in the world where this day is observed on the national level."

Lyrics to the song "Highway of Heroes":

The day I shipped out,
They numbered a dozen.
Upon my return,
Were a hundred or so.
From the coast and from the prairies,
I bet they keep coming.
add one more name from Ontario.

Chorus:
Carry me home down The Highway of Heroes.
People above with their flags flying low.
Carry me softly, down The Highway of Heroes.
True Patriot Love,
There was never more.

I served with distinction,
No visions of glory.
I served without question,
Or personal gain.
Seek no justification,
Its not part of my story.
and it offers
No comfort to the ones who remain.

Chorus:
Just carry me home down The Highway of Heroes.
People above with their flags flying low.
Carry me softly, down The Highway of Heroes.
True Patriot Love,
There was never more.

I took up my vocation,
I was called by my nation.
Without hesitation,
My answer I gave.
Now I am not wondering,
the things that I might have been.
I'm no consolation,
To the forgotten brave.

Chorus:
So Carry me home down The Highway of Heroes.
People above with their flags flying low.
Carry me softly, down The Highway of Heroes.
True Patriot Love,
There was never more.

Being on the overpass when first ..fallen returned was powerful experience...flown in to Trenton and then to the coroner in T.O. It was spontaneous and the surviving family members reactions in the vehicles made it a proud moment and you could see it bolstered their spirits.

Eyes filled with tears and hearts filled with a mix of sorrow and pride, as we follow Cpl Cirillo home let's also remember Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent who was killed last Monday in Quebec:

As Canada takes time to honour Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, Canadians are also being asked to remember Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who worked to help sick and injured veterans and soldiers.

Vincent was struck by a car and killed on Monday in an attack in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec. The man who ran him down, Martin Couture-Rouleau, was killed by police. He was on a terror watchlist and has been described by the government as "radicalized."
