Search for Shannon White continues - Kamloops This Week

At the request of RCMP, Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) retraced its steps this past weekend in the case of Shannon White, the Kamloops woman who has been missing since Nov. 1.

Police had KSAR return to search an area it had previously examined, which 14 members, including some from Barriere, Wells Gray and Logan Lake search and rescue teams, conducted on Saturday, Nov. 27, over a nine-hour period.

“Just to make sure we covered it off well,” Hobler told KTW.

He said no other searches for White are planned at the moment, but added KSAR will again return if requested to do so by the RCMP.

Hobler said he could not comment on why police tasked KSAR with searching the area this past weekend, nor could he specify the location or confirm what, if anything, came of the search as it is an open RCMP file.

Some snippets

Kamloops woman Shannon White has been missing without explanation for over a month. No new clues about her case have been released for over two weeks, and the disappearance is causing some female residents to feel more fearful about their safety.

Alix Dolson is the program coordinator at the Kamloops Sexual Assault Centre.
“We have seen an increase in anxiety among some women and vulnerable people in the community since the disappearance of Shannon White,” Dolson said. “Sometimes anxiety levels increase when a high profile case is in the media but it doesn’t mean there is an increase in risk to the community.”

In Canada, pepper spray carried for the intention of personal protection is considered a prohibited weapon by the criminal code. Dolson said she does not encourage anyone to carry an illegal weapon. “One of the best things people can do is to demand they have a safe way to get home,” she said. “Have a co-worker to walk out to the parking lot with, and always look out for each other. Trust your instincts, if it doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t.”

“The search for Shannon White continues and there is nothing further to add since our Nov. 15 media release,” said RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn in an email to iNFOnews. “If something new becomes available that may help further the investigation by turning to the public for assistance, then we will issue another media release. "In the meantime, the investigation is ongoing and we continue to appeal to the public to contact police with any information related to her disappearance, and to be on the lookout for her or anything that could help police locate her," Const.Evelyn said.

I'm giving Shannon a bump. No new updates, but she deserves better than WS page 6.

A Kamloops man has completed 18 days of searching for missing Shannon White with his trained search dog Ranger and he is optimistic she will be found soon.

He (Mike Ritcey) and Ranger will keep searching for White until she is found.

Same in the UK, sadly. :(

A lone woman is just a sitting duck for any potential perp. No wonder there are so many physical and sexual assaults on females.

Realistically though how often does a random policeman search your bag? And even if you were caught with it I imagine you would just get a slap on the wrist.

In Canada we’d probably be best to carry Bear Spray, known to be just as effective, and the intended purpose would never be questioned by police, especially for someone engaged in activities involving the outdoors. Easily purchased and inexpensive.

Wonderful photo of Ranger helping with the search.

What an incredible man to devote so much time as a search volunteer.

“A Kamloops man has completed 18 days of searching for missing Shannon White with his trained search dog Ranger and he is optimistic she will be found soon.

Mike Ritcey has spent decades working at the B.C. Ambulance Service, and in the search and rescue field. He volunteers his time to search for missing people. He said he and Ranger have found missing people in the past.

“I think Shannon's case is solvable,” he said. “I think we’ll be able to find her, it is just going to take time. Every time someone goes out searching, the area gets smaller. You just keep crossing areas off the map.”….”

The phrase 'better to ask for forgiveness than permission' comes to mind.

Kamloops RCMP have been kept busy in 2021 with fires, floods, residential school findings, protests, property crimes, and missing persons.

While the latter has been a popular topic of discussion after the Nov. 1 disappearance of Shannon White, police say there has not been a big increase in missing persons reports in Kamloops.

“In the city of Kamloops, I have over 700 missing people a year reported to us. Most people don’t realize that,” explains Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Syd Lecky. “Almost all are recovered or returned home, mostly within a day or two, or on the same day even. Shannon White is not one of those.”

Whoa! That is a humongous amount of people to go missing in such a small Canadian town.
Wonder what's going on there? Sounds like the land version of the Bermuda triangle.

I visited there a couple of years ago and thought it seemed small too, but wikipedia says it now has a 100k population. It also gets a lot of tourists via railways and the Trans Canada Highway.

As is the case everywhere, more people reported missing are out of touch with family and friends by choice than the missing who are victims of criminals.

From the link:
“Almost all are recovered or returned home, mostly within a day or two, or on the same day even.”
RCMP are also aware of social media posts circulating about more women being abducted, or going missing from the area. Lecky urges people to check with official sources of information.

On the missing persons report section of the BC RCMP website, only two case profiles from the Kamloops detachment in the past 12 months remain posted – Shannon White, and Peter Joseph Leonard. When missing persons are found, their posting is removed to respect the individual’s privacy.

I live in that general region, and it is a fairly big city, and like you mention, alot of the missing people are found shortly after being reported as so. I haven't noticed all that many missing people from Kamloops reported in the media as longterm disappearances and I don't think it is any different from other cities in our area.
